Amid China’s AI Shift, JD.com Bets on 3 Million Robots to Automate Logistics

China’s AI Shift, JD.com Bets on 3 Million Robots to Automate Logistics | CIO Times Magazine

Chinese e-commerce company JD.com is stepping up its investment in robotics as it looks to automate large parts of its nationwide logistics network. The company plans to deploy millions of machines over the next five years, aiming to make its supply chain faster, more efficient and less dependent on manual labour.

At an event in Beijing on Wednesday, JD Logistics, the company’s logistics division, unveiled its new industrial Wolf Robot series. The company plans to procure 3 million robots, along with 1 million unstaffed vehicles and 100,000 delivery drones, according to Cao Peng, chairman of JD Logistics’ technology committee.

The large-scale rollout reflects the growing focus on artificial intelligence and automation across China’s technology and industrial sectors.

Robots to Handle Logistics Tasks

The Wolf Robot system is being developed to take on repetitive and physically demanding jobs across the logistics process. According to Liu Lige, head of embodied intelligence robots at JD Logistics, the machines will be capable of picking, sorting, transporting and delivering goods with limited human involvement.

The robots are also designed to work in difficult environments where conventional logistics operations can be challenging. By automating these tasks, JD.com expects to improve operational efficiency while reducing the need for workers to perform physically intensive duties.

The company’s plans extend beyond warehouse automation. The combination of robots, autonomous vehicles and delivery drones points to a broader effort to build an increasingly automated supply chain covering multiple stages of the delivery process.

Retraining Workers for New Roles

While automation is expected to reduce the need for people in some frontline logistics positions, JD.com says it does not plan to simply replace its workforce. Instead, the company intends to retrain its large network of couriers and other employees for technical and specialised roles.

This approach could allow workers to move into positions involving the operation, maintenance and management of automated systems as robotics becomes more deeply integrated into logistics.

JD.com’s ambitious robotics strategy comes as Chinese companies increasingly explore AI-powered automation to address labour-intensive processes and improve productivity. If successfully implemented, the programme could reshape how goods are stored, handled and delivered across the country, while giving JD.com a larger role in the development of intelligent logistics systems.
