Gladyse Taylor: Carving New Benchmarks of Leadership and Innovation

The world is witnessing a remarkable transformation—a surge of women leaders stepping into roles that are reshaping industries, communities, and even the way we perceive leadership itself. These leaders are not just breaking barriers; they are setting new standards for what it means to lead with purpose, empathy, and innovation.

Female leadership today is defined by its resilience, adaptability, and a deep understanding of the human aspect of any challenge. It’s about inspiring change while staying true to one’s values, and it’s about leveraging every tool available—technology, collaboration, and creativity—to make a difference.

At the forefront of this movement is Gladyse Taylor, a leader whose story embodies the essence of innovation and the transformative power of public service. Gladyse is not only a visionary in her approach but also a pragmatic leader who understands the importance of modernizing systems to serve people better.

Her career is a testament to how technology and innovation, when placed in the hands of a compassionate leader, can lead to meaningful change. Gladyse’s journey through the corridors of public service, finance, and corrections is an inspiring example of how to navigate complex challenges while keeping the well-being of the community at the center.

As the Project Management Director at the State of Illinois, Gladyse has spent her career transforming ideas into impactful realities. Her story takes us from the corporate world of financial operations to leading transformative initiatives in public safety and human resources. It’s a journey driven by an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place, one initiative at a time.

The Path to Transformational Leadership

Gladyse’s career began in finance, where she worked in financial reporting for the Quaker Oats Company before their acquisition by PepsiCo. She then moved to Soft Sheen Products (L’Oreal), where she spent 20 years managing financial operations for their in-house advertising agency. During this period, Gladyse also contributed to Soft Sheen’s brand campaigns, managing photo shoots for print and packaging. After Soft Sheen was acquired by L’Oreal, she became part of the Division’s Finance Group.

When L’Oreal decided to move Soft Sheen operations to the East Coast, an unexpected opportunity arose. The State of Illinois considered Gladyse and her colleagues for Chief Fiscal Officer positions across state agencies. Thus began her journey into public service, where she has held numerous roles, including Deputy Director at the Governor’s Office of Management and Budget (GOMB) and Chief Fiscal Officer at the Department of Corrections (IDOC). Her varied experience within the State of Illinois allowed her to contribute significantly to multiple aspects of public administration, from managing operating budgets to overseeing public safety initiatives.

Gladyse started at IDOC as a contract employee in 2005 and quickly transitioned to a state employee. Her first assignment was to coordinate the consolidation of fiscal and human resource operations across Illinois’ Public Safety Agencies under a shared services model. Just six months later, she took on the role of Deputy Director at GOMB, leading the development of the state’s operating budget—a substantial $53 billion over her five-year tenure. Her adaptability and financial acumen became invaluable assets during these formative years.

Leading with Vision

Gladyse stands apart as a leader who approaches every challenge with an entrepreneurial mindset. Her experience at Soft Sheen/L’Oreal taught her the value of excelling in her role, and she has carried this lesson with her throughout her public service career. “I’ve used these guiding principles as encouragement for every team that I participate in,” she says.

Her leadership philosophy is deeply rooted in collaboration and empowerment. Gladyse believes in fostering a work environment where everyone feels valued and where contributions from all levels are encouraged. Her approach to leadership is one that inspires, motivates, and drives her teams to excel, not just as individuals, but as cohesive units working towards a shared goal.

Building Bridges in Public Service

When Gladyse joined the Illinois Department of Corrections, she quickly realized that the organization was operating in silos, which hindered progress and collaboration. Determined to change this, she initiated monthly town hall meetings with senior staff from across all disciplines within the 12,000-person agency. These meetings became a platform for open communication, where staff could discuss challenges, share solutions, and work towards elevating cross-functional success.

“I believe that success is dependent on sharing both attributes and concerns with every discipline of the business,” she notes. By fostering transparency and encouraging dialogue, Gladyse helped break down barriers and ensured that the agency operated with a unified vision. Her ability to bring people together, even in the most challenging environments, is a testament to her leadership and her commitment to driving positive change.

Navigating Crisis with Clarity

One of the most significant challenges Gladyse faced in her career came in 2010, when the Illinois Department of Corrections was under intense public scrutiny for the early release of individuals in custody. The lack of data and transparency regarding the release of these individuals led to widespread public outcry. In response, Gladyse was part of a team assigned by the Governor’s Office to manage the situation and restore public trust.

Recognizing that the department’s outdated offender and juvenile tracking systems were a major impediment to effective corrections operations, Gladyse spearheaded the effort to replace the antiquated systems with a state-of-the-art offender management system. This project, known as IIC (Individuals in Custody) 360, modernized the department’s capabilities by automating workflows, ensuring data accuracy, and enabling real-time information sharing across agencies.

The implementation of IIC360 was no small feat—it required navigating political, administrative, and legislative changes over several years. Yet, Gladyse’s dedication and leadership saw the project through to completion, ultimately providing a comprehensive, data-driven solution that improved efficiency, reduced costs, and ensured the safety and well-being of those in custody.

IIC360 not only addressed the immediate crisis but also laid the groundwork for a more transparent and efficient correctional system in Illinois. Gladyse’s efforts have been instrumental in ensuring that the Department of Corrections can effectively evaluate individuals in custody, prevent re-offending, and provide a higher standard of care and rehabilitation.

Her career is marked by a series of professional milestones that demonstrate her ability to lead with a vision, adapt to change, and deliver results. Whether it was managing the state’s $53 billion budget or overseeing critical reforms at the Department of Corrections, Gladyse has consistently shown that true leadership is about making decisions that benefit not just the organization, but the community at large.

Beyond the Office

While Gladyse’s professional accomplishments are impressive, there is much more to her than her career. She is a person who values lifelong learning and personal growth. When asked about her favorite book, she names On Her Own Ground: The Life and Time of Madam C.J. Walker, a story that resonates deeply with her for its portrayal of a successful African American woman who thought for herself and made decisions that impacted her community.

Gladyse describes herself as “curious” and believes that there is something new to learn every day—a mindset that has undoubtedly contributed to her success. She also recognizes the importance of working with her natural rhythm; for her, this means tackling her most challenging tasks early in the morning when she is at her mental and physical best.

She is humbled by the recognition she has received throughout her career, and she continues to offer advice and guidance based on her extensive experience in public service.

Gladyse’s advice for aspiring women leaders is powerful: “Do not lose sight of your dreams or aspirations. It often takes time, but eventually, someone is listening and paying attention to your efforts.”

Shaping the Future of Public Service

Looking to the future, Gladyse Taylor remains committed to driving innovation and collaboration within the public sector. Her vision is to convince other public sector entities of the value of shared communication through IT solutions.

She believes that effective communication is not only key to improving operational efficiency but is also essential to fostering a better understanding of the public and advancing social justice reform.

Gladyse’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, adaptability, and a genuine desire to make a difference. As she continues to share her insights and experiences, she remains an influential figure in public service, a visionary leader who has dedicated her career to improving the lives of others, one initiative at a time.

Sunny Leone: From Stardom to Business Empire – A Story of Passion, Innovation, and Leadership

True leadership is not about being in charge. It’s about taking care of those in your charge.”

This powerful statement captures the essence of what it means to lead with heart, vision, and empathy. Leadership today, is about more than just decision-making and profits. It’s about nurturing growth, inspiring teams, and advocating a culture of innovation. It’s about turning challenges into opportunities and understanding that success is a journey, not a destination.

For Sunny Leone, the Owner of StarStruck and Affetto, this philosophy rings true in everything she does. From her early days of stardom to her evolution as a successful entrepreneur, Sunny embodies the spirit of leadership that prioritizes people and purpose. Her story is one of resilience, creativity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Not just in front of the camera, but behind the scenes of her two thriving companies.

Sunny’s journey into the business world was anything but conventional. While most know her as an entertainer, few realize that beneath her glamorous exterior lies a businesswoman with a sharp instinct for innovation and an unwavering commitment to her vision. Her ventures are not just about creating products; they’re about empowering people to feel confident and embrace their individuality.

Let’s dive into the inspiring story of how Sunny transformed her passion into a flourishing business empire, and how her leadership continues to shape the future of beauty and fragrance.

From Stardom to Entrepreneurship

Sunny Leone’s venture into the business world adds another layer to her multifaceted persona. Long before the cameras and lights, Sunny had entrepreneurial ambitions. As she shared with us in the interview, “What led me to the position and role that I’m in now is when I was very young. I always knew that I wanted to own my own business, my own company, but I just didn’t know in what field that would be.”

From organizing lemonade stands as a child to managing her own beauty empire today, Sunny’s drive has always been about ownership and independence. She continues, “I’ve always owned my own businesses. I knew I was never going to be someone who enjoyed sitting at a desk and working that 9-to-5 job.”

This entrepreneurial spirit never left her, even as her fame grew in the entertainment world. Over the years, Sunny recognized the importance of leveraging her platform for business ventures that aligned with her personal passions. Enter StarStruck and Affetto, two brands that embody her commitment to beauty, individuality, and self-expression.

StarStruck: A Beauty Revolution

In 2018, Sunny Leone launched StarStruck, India’s first 100% celebrity-owned cosmetic brand. StarStruck is more than just a brand—it’s a reflection of Sunny’s own beauty philosophy. What started as a passion project has grown into a globally recognized beauty brand, offering over 260 products ranging from lipsticks and foundations to eyeshadows. StarStruck’s rapid success is reflected in its ₹10 crore annual revenue, an impressive milestone considering Sunny started the company with an initial investment of just ₹10 lakh.

Sunny’s journey with StarStruck began when she realized that despite her massive following, she was considered “too much of a risk” by other companies to serve as a brand ambassador. Not one to back down, she decided to create her own brand and take control of her business destiny. “DONE!” she proclaimed in an interview, marking the beginning of StarStruck’s meteoric rise.

“I believe StarStruck is one of my most amazing achievements so far. Everything I’ve learned from childhood into adulthood has led me to this point. We are on an amazing path to disrupt the market with a product that people can enjoy.”

The beauty market is notoriously competitive, yet StarStruck has managed to carve out a niche by offering high-quality, affordable products that cater to a diverse audience. As Sunny puts it, “When your passions resonate with others, and they appreciate the product you’ve created, it’s the best feeling.”

StarStruck’s ethical approach is also a core part of its identity. As Sunny puts it, “Know what you wear!” The brand continues to grow by embracing inclusivity and innovation, catering to a wide range of skin tones and personal styles. With over 165K followers on Instagram, StarStruck’s presence in the digital space is as strong as its presence in retail.

“The beauty & cosmetics industry is always changing. When you create something new, you’re constantly adapting,” says Sunny. Her hands-on involvement in the product development process ensures that StarStruck remains innovative, while also staying true to her personal values.

Sunny’s role as a business owner goes beyond just lending her name to the brand. She actively oversees product formulation, marketing, and distribution, proving that she’s as much a business leader as she is a public figure. “It’s important to listen to your gut but also to others around you who might have different insights,” she notes. Her team plays a crucial role in the brand’s success, and Sunny fosters an environment where creativity thrives.

Affetto: The Fragrance of Confidence

If StarStruck is a celebration of beauty, Affetto is a tribute to individuality and self-expression. Sunny launched her fragrance line with the intent of creating scents that resonate with the modern individual. Available in over 500 outlets across India, Affetto’s range includes perfumes, deodorants, and body mists, each crafted with the finest ingredients and designed to be versatile across seasons along with 24 product variations catering to both men and women.

Affetto has built a loyal customer base by crafting high-quality fragrances that are designed to be worn year-round. The brand’s philosophy is rooted in Sunny’s belief that beauty goes beyond cosmetics; it’s about how you feel. “Affetto is designed to be worn by anyone. It’s about breaking the mold of traditional perfumery,” Sunny explains.

The inspiration behind Affetto, Sunny shares, is rooted in personal confidence: “Our fragrances are inspired by the confidence and allure of the modern individual.” Affetto’s philosophy aligns with Sunny’s belief that beauty and confidence go hand in hand. “We want everyone—women, men, and anyone in between—to feel great and confident using our products.” This inclusive approach is a reflection of Sunny’s broader brand vision—one that transcends gender and celebrates the uniqueness of every individual.

Together with StarStruck, Affetto reflects Sunny Leone’s vision of creating empowering products that make people feel confident in their own skin. Her ventures continue to thrive, with ambitious plans for expansion into new markets, and Affetto is on the path to becoming a household name in the fragrance industry.

The Guiding Principles Behind the Brand

What sets Sunny apart as a business leader is her instinct for risk-taking and resilience. Her approach to leadership is shaped by a combination of intuition and a willingness to learn. “I’ve always believed that I should take chances and risks in things that I’m passionate about,” she says.

Sunny’s leadership style is defined by a hands-on approach, where she makes it a point to understand every facet of her business. “I knew everything about my business and every role in it, so no one could take over.” This level of involvement has allowed her to make informed decisions, whether it’s about product development or team management.

Yet, Sunny also acknowledges the importance of collaboration. “Now it’s changed a little because we all need people smarter than us in certain fields. We have to recognize when to step back and work with the right people to advance our company.” Her ability to balance control with delegation is one of the key reasons her ventures continue to thrive.

An Entrepreneur’s Ordeal

Like any entrepreneur, Sunny has faced her share of challenges. “I think for most entrepreneurs or business owners, dealing with employees daily is one of the biggest challenges. You have to balance everyone’s needs, including your own,” she shares. Managing a diverse team and maintaining a positive work environment can be demanding, but Sunny has managed to strike a balance by fostering open communication and encouraging collaboration.

Her business philosophy is built on resilience. “The key qualities that any leader should possess are resilience and adaptability because you will face rejection or see ideas that don’t work out.” For Sunny, the ability to pivot and adapt to changing market conditions is crucial to staying ahead in today’s dynamic business landscape.

One of the most striking aspects of Sunny’s leadership is how she intertwines her personal and professional life. “You might have a great idea while sitting with a friend or spending time with family,” she says. Sunny believes that creativity often stems from personal experiences, and she encourages her team to draw inspiration from all aspects of life.

This blending of personal and professional spheres is what keeps her grounded. It also allows her to approach business decisions with empathy and a deep understanding of what her customers want.

A Vision for the Future

Looking forward, Sunny’s focus remains on growing her businesses while staying true to her core values. She envisions a future where StarStruck and Affetto continue to expand, both in terms of product offerings and market reach.

For Sunny, the journey is just as important as the destination. Her entrepreneurial ventures are not just about creating products, they’re about building a legacy. “I come from a generation that had to work hard to get our brands out there, and I believe in building a strong foundation for a business. Every business owner should aim to build a business that can stand the test of time.” With her leadership, innovation, and unwavering passion, Sunny is well on her way to doing just that.

Sunny Leone’s journey from the entertainment world to entrepreneurship is a powerful example of how passion, resilience, and adaptability can lead to success in any field. Through StarStruck and Affetto, Sunny has proven that she is much more than just a celebrity; she is a dynamic leader who is redefining the beauty and fragrance industries. Her story is one of perseverance, innovation, and the drive to empower others through her brand.

As Sunny continues to push boundaries, her legacy as an entrepreneur will undoubtedly inspire the upcoming generations of leaders.

For many small business owners, the debate around the minimum wage hike is more than just a political issue it’s a matter of survival. Small businesses, particularly those in the retail, hospitality, and service industries, are especially vulnerable to increases in operational costs. A rise in the minimum wage would directly impact labor expenses, which are often one of the largest expenses for these businesses.

Many owners worry that the proposed wage increase will force them to either raise prices, reduce their workforce, or even close their doors. A common sentiment among these entrepreneurs is that their profit margins are already tight, and any additional financial burden could prove disastrous.

“The idea of paying employees more is appealing, but the reality is that for many small businesses, we’re operating on a shoestring budget,” said John Harris, owner of a family-run restaurant in downtown. “Raising wages could lead to price hikes, and that’s going to drive away customers.”

On the other side of the debate, supporters of the wage increase argue that the current minimum wage fails to keep up with inflation and rising living costs. They believe that a higher wage will help reduce poverty and improve the quality of life for workers, thereby benefiting the economy in the long term. However, these arguments are not enough to sway many small business owners who see the proposal as a threat to their livelihood.

Some business owners are also concerned about the potential for increased competition from larger corporations that can absorb Wage Laws hikes more easily. They fear that the wage hike will further tilt the playing field in favor of big-box retailers and franchises, leaving small, independent businesses at a disadvantage.

but, the uncertainty surrounding the implementation of these changes has left many business owners uncertain about how to plan for the future. Without knowing the exact timing or amount of the wage increase, small businesses struggle to make long-term financial plans and projections.

“I understand the need for workers to earn more, but the timing of this could not be worse,” said Maria Lopez, who operates a local bookstore. “We’ve already been hit hard by inflation and the pandemic, and now we might face another financial burden that we can’t afford.”

Does a Minimum Wage Benefit Workers?

As the vote approaches, small business owners are calling for more support from local governments. They suggest that there should be more consideration for the unique challenges they face, such as lower profit margins and limited access to capital. Some propose phased-in increases to allow businesses to adjust gradually, while others are pushing for exemptions or other forms of relief.

Ultimately, the decision on whether to raise the minimum wage will be made by voters, but the ongoing debate highlights the difficult balancing act between improving worker wages and maintaining the health of small businesses. For now, many small business owners are anxiously awaiting the outcome of the vote, hoping that the final decision will take into account the unique needs and challenges of their businesses.

Maria Semkina: Expert in Navigating the Emerging and Volatile Markets and Driving Growth

The role of Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is expected to undergo significant changes in the future, driven by evolving business landscapes, technological advancements, and shifting economic dynamics. While the traditional responsibilities of a CFO include financial management, reporting, and risk mitigation, the future role is likely to be more strategic, multidimensional, and collaborative.

As the CFO of, the Middle East, Africa, Turkey, and East Europe for Lenovo, Maria Semkina shares that the future CFO is expected to be a strategic leader who not only manages financial aspects but also actively contributes to shaping the overall success and sustainability of the organization. This involves a broader skill set that encompasses technology, data analysis, strategic thinking, and effective collaboration with various stakeholders.

For someone who has held the position of CFO for over a decade now, Maria points out that some aspects of the CFO role remain consistent over time. These long-lasting responsibilities include strategic leadership, risk management and decision-making, and talent development. Strategic leadership involves communicating the principal Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and the strategic direction for managing the organization. Risk management and decision-making involve engaging in comprehensive risk management practices and making informed decisions that align with the overarching strategic goals. Talent development is recognized as paramount and involves identifying, nurturing, and empowering individuals to contribute effectively to the organizational objectives. These core functions highlight the enduring and foundational nature of the CFO role, emphasizing strategic foresight, effective risk mitigation, and the pivotal role of talent development in sustaining organizational success.

Charting her Course

Maria believes that one’s professional journey commences during the formative years of education. She’s glad that her parents let her explore everything from sports and language to science, and music, to instil in her a broader perspective on the world.

After completing her secondary education, Maria set a personal goal to gain admission to the preeminent university in Russia, which she successfully achieved. Opting for a degree in Finance, she established a business club at her university, facilitating interactions with top industry leaders who shared their success stories. Subsequent to graduating, she joined British American Tobacco’s Finance Management Trainee program, where she was exposed to various facets of finance, including audit, corporate finance, marketing finance, and operations finance, profoundly shaping her understanding of the field.

After completing the program, Maria continued her tenure at British American Tobacco for several years. However, as a proactive individual perpetually seeking challenges and continuous learning, she eventually sought new horizons. Enticed by an opportunity to join a company spearheading transformational change, she joined Syngenta, a multinational agritech company, where she assumed the role of Finance Manager tasked with establishing and refining financial and operational processes.

Over the course of a decade with Syngenta, her professional character evolved, characterized by an unwavering commitment to delivering at a capacity of 200%. She actively engaged in cross-functional projects, recognizing that a comprehensive 360-degree knowledge of all facets of business operations and industry is indispensable for providing adept financial support and facilitating informed decision-making.

While serving as a Finance Manager, Maria seized the opportunity to expand my purview and assumed the role of CFO for Belarus, Central Asia, and the Caucasus—an experience that allowed her to apply and refine my management skills.

Amidst Syngenta’s organizational transformation involving the reorganization of two businesses, I made a pivotal decision to venture into entrepreneurship. During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, I focused on assisting businesses in achieving sustainable growth and effective management. This multifaceted experience involved delving into various business sectors, including the establishment and management of her own restaurant.

Subsequently, Lenovo presented an opportunity for a CFO role covering the East Europe territory. Drawing on over 15 years of experience, she prioritized the values and culture of the company over mere remuneration. Lenovo, aligning seamlessly with her professional preferences, emerged as the ideal choice for Maria.

Committed to Excellence

Maria is deeply passionate about her work, consistently seeking new avenues for personal and professional development. This commitment to excellence granted her visibility across the organizations she has worked for, culminating in her appointment to the role of CFO. Her approach has always prioritized close collaboration with business partners, leading her to spend considerable time in the field, engaging with clients and customers, and understanding their concerns and aspirations.

Reflecting on her life philosophy, encapsulated in the quote “Life doesn’t give you challenges, life gives you opportunities,” she believes that challenges are inherent opportunities for growth and development. In light of the geopolitical turbulence in the East Europe region, she embraced a bold and challenging decision to relocate to Dubai and assume the role of CFO for the Middle East, Turkey, Africa, and East Europe region.

This decision, while daunting, involved navigating a region where women face limitations in rights and opportunities for top management roles. Furthermore, acclimating to a new country with a distinct culture was a source of initial hesitation. Nevertheless, she made the conscious choice to embrace this opportunity.

As Lenovo’s CFO, she looks over a huge region, encompassing over 85 countries, and presents a unique complexity, each requiring a tailored management approach. “My diverse and talented team comprises professionals of exceptional caliber. My overarching goal is to provide them with a clear vision and opportunities for growth, thereby supporting the business in achieving healthy and sustainable expansion,” she says.

Balancing Professional and Personal Aspirations

Throughout her life, Maria has navigated significant stress and encountered both personal and professional challenges that, at times, led her to periods of distress, depression, and decreased productivity. The relentless pace of the world often impedes reflection on the past and strategic planning for the future. Amidst the deluge of information and life demands, one frequently overlooks the importance of pausing to acknowledge personal achievements and expressing gratitude for one’s accomplishments, she feels.

Furthermore, as a woman, she felt societal expectations compound, requiring proficiency not only as a high-performing professional but also as a devoted mother and friend. The societal expectation of perfection across all facets of life can be overwhelming. She deems it essential to recognize that the efforts exerted are more than sufficient. The pursuit of perfection in every domain necessitates careful prioritization of what holds paramount importance.

“In my own journey, I have encountered similar challenges and offered advice to a friend facing comparable difficulties. I emphasized the significance of prioritizing health as the foremost asset. Many accomplished individuals adhere to daily routines, a practice that contributes significantly to personal and professional stability. Though the benefits may not be immediately apparent, the investment in routine development yields dividends in the long run, enhancing both personal and professional aspects of life,” shares Maria.

Impending Change in Data Management with Growth of Technology

Maria sheds light on how the progression of technology has dramatically changed the way we handle information. From using calculators for basic calculations to employing Excel for extensive data analytics, the world has witnessed a significant evolution over the years. In the current landscape, the influx of new technologies has inundated us with vast amounts of data, reaching a point where it can be overwhelming for individuals to process manually.

Consider a scenario reminiscent of scenes from futuristic movies, where individuals don glasses that provide information on every object and person in their surroundings. This vision of the future is rapidly approaching reality. However, it is crucial to emphasize that behind these technological advancements, there must always be a human presence guiding and interpreting the information.

As we navigate this era of extensive data processing, Maria says that it is imperative not to overlook two critical factors: data privacy and security. With the abundance of data being processed, maintaining the confidentiality and integrity of this information becomes paramount. Striking a balance between harnessing the power of data for insights and respecting privacy rights is a challenge that demands careful consideration, she shares.

The responsible and ethical utilization of information is another key aspect. “While technology empowers us with unprecedented capabilities, the way we leverage this information requires conscientious decision-making. It’s important to avoid potential disputes and obstacles in the evolution of data management by ensuring that ethical standards and privacy concerns are central to the development and deployment of these technologies. This approach will contribute to fostering a trustworthy and sustainable evolution in data management practices,” she suggests.

Keeping the Business Steady

Maria opines that the most critical and fundamental aspect, when establishing a company, is to determine its purpose. Every organization is driven by a distinct purpose that remains constant despite the evolving world. At Lenovo, the primary goal is to deliver solutions that enhance the daily lives of end customers, making them more enjoyable and comfortable.

In the initial stages, Maria says that the emphasis was on providing a simple solution—a portable device for analyzing and storing basic data. However, with the passage of decades, customer expectations have evolved into a demand for comprehensive solutions encompassing hardware, storage, advanced problem-solving, extensive data management, and artificial intelligence (AI). “Thus, it is imperative to remain steadfast in upholding our core purpose while adapting to the dynamic changes introduced by the world, including advancements in AI, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), and data analytics,” she says.

To keep a business going against the odds, finance plays a pivotal role in this dynamic environment, serving as the “right hand” of the business. As a core function, finance must keep pace with the evolving business landscape. In addition to aligning with the organization’s overarching purpose, finance acts as the skeleton, providing structure through meticulous management of processes, ensuring compliance with regulations, and navigating the complexities of tax regulations. “In the face of rapid market changes, the finance function becomes instrumental in aiding the organization to make informed, efficient decisions within the established frameworks of the financial world,” advises Maria.

Accolades

Lenovo, being a global technology company, has been recognized for its innovation and contributions to the industry. Lenovo has often received accolades for its high-quality laptops, desktops, and other computing devices. Most recently, Lenovo was recognized as Best Hardware Vendor at the Future Enterprise Awards and Best Data Centre Solution Vendor at the ICT Leadership Awards.

Maria was recently chosen as the Top 10 Women CFO in UAE in 2023. She was also a panel speaker at the World Finance Forum in 2023 held in Dubai.

Way Forward

The past couple of years have been marked by significant changes in Maria’s life, particularly since joining Lenovo in September 2021. In a span of 10 months, she relocated to a new country and assumed a new role. Over the subsequent year, her responsibilities expanded to encompass all Lenovo businesses in her region, including Mobile, PC, Services, and Servers.

While the challenges of her current role are considerable, Maria finds great satisfaction in the work. She recognizes the importance of pausing to nurture and grow within her current position. However, the rapidly evolving world demands constant adaptation, and she finds herself continuously on a learning curve.

Looking ahead 5-10 years, Maria’s path remains uncertain. What matters most to her is enjoying each day and seizing opportunities for personal growth. Outside of her professional endeavors, she holds a keen interest in architecture, aspiring to contribute to the betterment of the world and its people. Charitable pursuits may be a part of her future, building on her current involvement in supporting students and colleagues through mentoring and guidance as they strive for personal and professional growth.

“As for Lenovo, one of its standout qualities is its agility. The company excels in adapting to the dynamic business environment, positioning itself as a key competitive force in the market. This ability to navigate change is a distinctive advantage that sets Lenovo apart from many other companies,” concludes Maria.

A Conscious and Connected Leader

As a distinguished leader, Luis recognizes that focusing on the roots of human behavior, both in society and business, allows one to anticipate and calculate with a surprising degree of accuracy how others will react to the plans, impulses, and beliefs. Developing human management models focused on understanding and accepting diversity in people allows one to take advantage of the most significant potential of companies and their collective ability to think and create. His focus has always been on teamwork, team spirit, and focus on the wellbeing of the game-changers.

In this sense, Luis proposes a new dimension within this holistic vision, a more human one and therefore more complex, a dimension that, if ignored, can generate many difficulties within the Implementation process of any strategy, even the best structured one.

Focusing on the “Well-being of People” is taking care of their happiness, understanding what makes them smile, what sustains them, their set of beliefs, and their daily gasoline; is to build excellence from a sustainable model that puts the happiness of employees first, where people go first, people second, and people third.

Luis is a recognized influential figure in the Global community of PMO experts. He is honored to earn this recognition, and over the years has maintained utmost integrity in fulfilling the many responsibilities of the role.

Luis adds, “Thanks for the compliment; I appreciate it. As a professional from such a small and developing country, it has been an honor that I have taken great responsibility. A few months ago, we reflected with some colleagues from the team, and we thought, “What great blessings. Why us?” After a few minutes, the question changed and became to a What for? And the answer we agreed on was: To serve, to make our gifts available and give back to the society of our country, wherever they need us.

The Art of Knowledge Sharing

Luis has been a university professor in different educational institutions for many years. He is passionate about teaching and knowledge sharing and sees it as a virtuous activity.

Luis believes education is a gift, perhaps one of the greatest ones. Education is the ultimate ticket to success. He has been entrusted with opportunities that have allowed him to care for his family.

Teachers share their understanding and way of being. They transmit values and inspire you to be better; they facilitate your learning and enhance your skills; they give all of themselves in the classroom and make their work a true vocation of service. Certainly, a very noble role in protecting multiple aspects of society, such as culture, academia, and social welfare.

Apart from teaching, Luis is a lifelong learner, who thoroughly practices what he preaches. He is convinced that, for the professional of the future, stopping learning is a “non-negotiable”; in his particular case, studying amuses him a lot. Certainly, much of what he studies and researches is related to the knowledge areas in which he works, but other than that, since he was a teenager, he was inquisitive and a fan of philosophy.

A little over two years ago, Luis started his Ph.D. in “History of Philosophy,” and lately, he is enjoying it a lot. Of course, he is not the most outstanding student in his classes but imagines how much fun it is for an Industrial Engineer to speak with Anthropologists, Sociologists, and Philosophers who have been contributing to these areas of study for years.

An Overview of PMOex

The recognitions obtained in 2021 and 2022 strengthened Luis’s desire to put his knowledge and experience at the service of the community. That is why he and his team created the First Center of Excellence in Latin America, specializing in PMOs and Corporate Strategy. Its primary purpose stems from its responsibility to impact the societies in which it could grow and develop. The goal it wants to achieve is to provide its community of professionals with new development opportunities, linking them with global networks of knowledge and training. Its young talents actively participate in designing and coordinating international leadership gatherings specifically focused on PMOs.

More about El Salvador’s Current State and Progress

El Salvador, a small nation located in Central America, boasts a strategic geographical position that facilitates global connectivity. With 321 kilometers of the Pacific Ocean coastline, seaports, 17 free zones, and several special regimes offering attractive tax incentives, El Salvador can become a leading business destination in Central America and Latin America. However, there are still significant challenges to overcome on this path.

In this context, El Salvador’s most valuable asset in achieving this goal lies within its human capital. With over 23,000 new technicians and professionals entering the job market annually, the country benefits from a young workforce, with 55% of the population under 40. Furthermore, 21% of graduates specialize in STEAM careers, encompassing fields related to science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. Salvadoran talent has increasingly occupied leadership positions in global companies, championing successful strategies that adhere to the highest quality and productivity standards worldwide.

Luis fondly states, “In our experience, we have also played a role in advancing new benchmarks of excellence in Project Management.”

Turning a Dream Project into Reality

“Memento Mori” is a Latin phrase that recalls the mortality of human beings and the transience of life; Luis and the team decided to name this new project that way. “MM” is an interview format program that will launch in 2024 for an American communication network; currently it is just finishing recording the first season.

“MM” is a space to share with exceptional human beings and devotees to service who seek to leave a better world than they found, honoring life with purpose. Additionally, the program includes special guests with whom Luis and the team will discuss philosophical topics, books, and more than one music lover.

Demetra Davis: A Social-preneur and Distinguished Leader in the Consulting and Coaching Field

Dreams are not just those that we see with our eyes closed, but also those that light up a deep desire inside us that refuses to die down until achieved. And do we even achieve a dream without a hurdle thrown in the middle? Never heard of that!

When Demetra Davis started her second innings after being honorably discharged from the United States Air Force, she was determined to start her career as a nurse. She completed her studies as a Registered Nurse at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, and immediately went to work in the Medical and Surgical ICU in the Baptist Health Care System.

Her career grew swiftly as she made some difficult decisions about the direction of her career and the knowledge that she wanted to obtain about patient care and healthcare in general. She began learning more about the track that patients were taking, their care plans, and discharge plans and soon came into her niche as a RN Case Manager. She obtained her certification in case management from the Commission of Case Management Certification in 2000. She became a Director of Case Management and supervised “great Registered Nurses and Social Workers who also cared about the complex navigation that patients go through in their most vulnerable times.”

All was going smoothly until there came an extremely complex barrier that Demetra could not overcome. She began losing her vision due Glaucoma in her early 30s. While not anticipating the loss of her vision as swiftly as it transitioned; Demetra continued to work through the loss of peripheral vision and the pain that the disease brought with it. “Working in the lighting of the hospital was so painful. My eyes would hurt, they would become so red that the days at work lost their innate joy,” she recalls.

After several eye surgeries, it became too difficult to work, read, and look at a computer screen. In 2014, Demetra had her last days as a Director of Case Management in the hospital setting. Just as Demetra had a desire to serve in the military, and a desire to serve as a Registered Nurse taking care of others, that desire remained in spite of her physical condition. That was the inspiration that led to Gordavi, LLC.

The Dream. The Vision.

Gordavi was established in 2018 as a consulting firm to assist others in bringing their dreams to life. The goal is to assist others with establishing their own business – be it for-profit or non-profit. There is training for those new to owning a business and assistance with process improvement, and strategic and marketing planning for those who are already in business but simply need a helping hand.

In 2021, Gordavi became a government contractor, providing services such as Leadership Development and Training, coaching services, and personal and team personality and work assessments to include 360-degree assessments. In 2022, professional business and life coaching was added to the portfolio of services. In 2023, Demetra obtained woman-owned, service-disabled veteran-owned, and minority enterprise certifications for Gordavi, LLC. She also assists others who desire to become government contractors.

Providing the Healing Touch

In 2022, Demetra started Take20ForLife, Inc. a non-profit that focuses on suicide prevention and intervention. Although there had been a global pandemic, COVID-19, the epidemic of suicide has still not had appropriate intervention as evidenced by the increasing numbers.

Take20ForLife, Inc. has a therapeutic website, focused on providing education, comfort, and mental health techniques to assist in aiding those who are thinking of suicide – to pause – Take 20 minutes to think about what you are thinking about. While, theoretically, it does take longer than 20 minutes to change a mind, the provision of options to help people remember the beauty that still exists in the world is an important option to have and a beginning to saving a life.

The goal of Take20ForLife, Inc. is to heal, encourage, educate, and eventually have a brick-and-mortar facility where mental health providers can provide treatment and care to those who are in need and suffering from depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other conditions which may lead to suicidal ideations. The on-site facilities would also provide a place for bereavement support groups for those impacted by the loss of a loved one due to suicide.

What stops people from self-healing?

The biggest obstacle to self-healing, says Demetra, is “self”. Most of us tend to not place as much importance on the need for self-care, self-regeneration, or even self-love.

“One of the things I am trying to do to assist in that area is the beginning of a K-university, National Institute of B.L.A.C.C. Art and Education. B.L.A.C.C. is an acronym for Building Legacy Artistry Community Culture. I believe that for people to truly love themselves, they MUST know and believe in the greatness that exists within them. B.L.A.C.C. will be a place that allows for the education of ALL history, Black History, and other cultures. It is important to know who you are and where you came from. Some powerful people in history are African American:

inventors, politicians, and our newly appointed Supreme Court Justice. These are people who create history and when our youth actually see that they can BE like those who have walked before them, their self-esteem and self-love can grow,” explains Demetra.

B.L.A.C.C. is for all cultures; however, it is important to know that we recognize it is important to combine legacy, education, artistry, and mindfulness of who one is. Demetra often says “Continue to walk in the GREATNESS that is YOU” and when she says that to people, she means it. She wants them to know they matter. Everyone matters. Black Lives Matter.

Reaching Out with Technology

For Demetra, it’s actually quite amazing, being 55 years old, and seeing the changes of technology over the past 3 decades as she has worked in various roles. She agrees that we simply cannot live without it. The use of artificial intelligence for education, grant development, social media posting, and so much more does take some of the edges off of time constraints; however, she also points out that our words are so important that we still have to “humanize” and individualize what the message is.

“We still have to impart our own vision into all that we do. Gordavi has a goal of being a global trader of technology and has partnered with large technology companies to make that dream and goal a reality,” she says.

The Dynamic World and Living a Holistic Life

Holistic life: the caring of all parts of a person including Body, Mind, and Soul, seems to have become less of a priority today, feels Demetra. For people to be their best selves, there has to be some sense of holistic living. The pace of today’s business world, personal life, and spiritual derision encompasses each of us; however, separating that from personal global health, requires the relegating of some things today in order to be here tomorrow. Shifting and prioritizing is a part of existence today and that shifting and prioritizing must also be included for one’s self.

“When business becomes too much, when physical harm, mental stress, and the sheer incarceration of the mind weighs over life itself – one must stop. How feasible?

My grandmother used to say “If you don’t take the time to make sure your body is healed, your body will take the time from you to heal itself”. That stands true today,” shares Demetra.

To stay mindful and stable in today’s dynamic world, the incorporation of goals into a business and maintaining those goals at the forefront of one’s mind is imperative as a business owner.

Without goals, there is no direction.

Although change is a constant in life, in business, and in the world, referring back to the “WHY” of the business and the “HOW” that the goals will be obtained makes it easier for flexibility to occur. In essence, what Demetra wants to say is that if you have direction, then you know where to turn when needed. Having a plan to change the course of a business became an obvious necessity in light of COVID-19. How do you prepare for the on-site of an almost global shutdown? Of course, we didn’t know that could happen – but now that we do, there are processes in place for a quick shift to remote employment, for a quick shift to communication to team members within organizations, and, unfortunately, also measures of “essential services” versus those which can be flexed or delayed. We learned a lot from COVID-19.

Vision for the Future

Gordavi, LLC was created to be a legacy company.

The “Gor” is the first part of Demetra’s grandson’s last name, Lennox Gorham. The “Davi” of course, is her last name.

In the years to come, Demetra would like for her grandson to take the company and turn it into what his vision might be. Having not come from generational wealth, Demetra finds it unfortunate that those who have a true desire to create a business have to start from scratch and indeed struggle. Of course, not everyone comes from a position of money, networks, or power; however, if it is within our ability to leave something to our children – to our legacy – what a wonderful feeling that would be. She wants to do that. She wants to do that. That is why she put his name, in combination with hers, on the business. She hopes that will inspire him to create a legacy for his children one day as well.

Gordavi is motivated by giving. They set aside 10% of all earnings to begin a foundation that will benefit women and children who are in need. “It is a sad day when we hear of single mothers in such desperate situations that they “give up” on life. That should never be. I have a customized small 18-wheeler that I put on my desk. This is the inspiration that one day, Gordavi will ship clothes, food, shoes, blankets, and other necessities to women and children to take the pressure off of those who are doing the very best that they can. Having been raised by a single mother and been a single mother myself, I know that struggle and how it can impact your self-esteem and self-worth. Gordavi will aim to combat that,” concludes Demetra.

Demetra’s Message for the Young Entrepreneurs:

For me personally, I can’t do anything without the Lord Jesus Christ. I was saved at the age of 13 and cannot imagine my life without the relationship that I have with God. My faith allows me to have comfort, hope, counsel, and continued encouragement when things get tough.

All that said, my advice to young professionals would be to “Do it”. Yes, that would be what I would say.

We all dream about success but feel that success must come on the heels of others. If you want to be an entrepreneur, do it. If you want to own a business and craft your own path, do it.

Yes, there is fear, there is uncertainty but those feelings come in every career. Why not step out and just do it afraid? Will there be a failure? Sure. Success comes through failing…over and over…until you find the success you are looking for. So “Do it”.

Quote:

In all things be true to self. That has been my life motto for the past 30 years.

My life goal is Psalm 27:4 “One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple.” This gives me direction. This is me being true to myself.

Andressa Freires: An Inspiring Leader in Tech Commited to Diversity, Education, And Ethical Data Practices

Andressa Freires is a rising star in the field of data science. She holds a senior position at Nubank, a large financial company in Brazil. As one of the few black women in this role, Andressa is making significant strides. Beyond her work at Nubank, she is also a data science and programming teacher at multiple schools, including postgraduate programs.

Andressa is passionate about diversity and ethics, actively participating in initiatives to promote women within her company and serving on the AI ethics committee. She founded “diversiData,” a platform that offers free career mentorships and courses to help diverse groups enter data professions. Through her efforts, she has already helped more than 30 people find jobs in the field. Andressa’s mission is to inspire women who don’t see themselves in technology, leadership spaces, or high seniority levels, working towards a more equal world where everyone has a place.

The Journey

Andressa’s journey from a curious child in Taboão da Serra to a data science specialist, startup founder, and educator has been driven by a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of knowledge. Growing up in Taboão da Serra, a city on the outskirts of São Paulo, Brazil, Andressa was fortunate to be close to the tech world from an early age, thanks to her father, who was a programmer. Watching him work sparked her curiosity and inspired a dream within her to become a scientist. This passion for technology led her to start programming at the age of 14, and she hasn’t stopped since.

At 17, Andressa left home to pursue a degree in computational physics in the countryside. Her time in college was transformative; she worked as an assistant professor in physics laboratories and delved into research in computational neuroscience. This experience solidified her love for both teaching and scientific inquiry. However, life took a turn when her grandmother was diagnosed with cancer, prompting her to return to Taboão da Serra to be with her family.

Upon returning, Andressa sought opportunities to continue her professional growth and landed an internship in data science at Itaú Bank. This role began her formal journey into the tech industry, where she could blend her passion for science, technology, and data.

Sharing the Power of Knowledge

Throughout her career, Andressa has remained dedicated to sharing knowledge and helping her community. This commitment led her to found diversiData, a company where 80% of its audience is female. At diversiData, they have reached over 5000 people across Brazil through various initiatives, including courses, workshops, mentorships, and partnerships. Its efforts have been featured in major events such as TDC, AI 4 Good, and the UNESCO AI Conference, as well as at universities and GDG/WTM events.

In her work, Andressa leverages her extensive experience in AI/ML, Cloud, Python, and Google Analytics to educate and empower others. She is passionate about creating and participating in events, public speaking, and developing content that inspires and equips her students with the skills they need to succeed in tech.

diversiData acts as an empowering initiative that bridges the gap between data, diversity, and culture. It aims to:

Educate: Through its YouTube channel, diversiData offers free educational content, workshops, and podcasts. Topics include data analysis, career transitions, and workplace diversity.

Mentor: Andressa shares mentorship opportunities and accessible content on her Instagram and TikTok. She advocates for diversity in data careers.

Diversity Data Platform: The online platform, Diversidata, guides organizations in collecting and using diversity data effectively.

Donning Multiple Hats

Currently, Andressa is juggling three fulfilling roles, each aligned with her passion for data science and social impact. She is not only a data professional but also a mentor, speaker, and advocate for diversity.

She works as a Data Science Specialist for Meiuca, a System Design company dedicated to delivering innovative design solutions to the market. Her role involves leveraging advanced data science techniques to enhance our system designs and improve our offerings. Her vision for Meiuca is to position it at the forefront of the system design industry, ensuring it delivers brilliant, cutting-edge solutions that meet and exceed market expectations. “I plan to achieve this by continuously integrating the latest advancements in AI and data science into our processes and fostering a culture of innovation within our team,” says Andressa.

In addition to her role at Meiuca, Andressa is actively involved in shaping a startup called MotoCred. MotoCred aims to offer loans to finance motorcycles for people living on the outskirts of northeastern Brazil. This initiative is particularly close to her heart as it addresses a significant need in a region that is often underserved by traditional financial institutions. By providing these loans, they are helping individuals achieve their dreams and improve their livelihoods.

“My vision for MotoCred is to become a trusted financial partner for the people in these communities, making dreams attainable where big banks have often said no. We will achieve this by building strong, community-focused relationships and offering flexible, accessible financial solutions tailored to our clients’ unique needs,” shares Andressa.

Finally, she is the founder of diversiData, a social impact company dedicated to offering courses, mentorship, and career opportunities in the data technology market to people from minorities or minoritized majorities. Its goal is to break down barriers and provide free and affordable high-quality training to those who face daily obstacles to entering this market. In its first year, diversiData has already impacted nearly 5000 people, helping dozens find their way into the data job market. The biggest challenge they face is planning courses and mentoring for individuals from extremely diverse backgrounds, including teenagers, people over 50, and those in social vulnerability. Adaptability and the ability to tailor diversiData’s teaching to different learning scenarios are crucial.

“My vision for diversiData is to scale our impact, reaching more underrepresented individuals and transforming their lives through technology, just as mine was transformed. By continuously refining our programs and expanding our reach, I believe we can make a significant difference in the tech industry, fostering a more inclusive and diverse community,” says Andressa.

Additionally, she is also part of the MIT Solve community, which seeks innovative solutions for a sustainable and equitable future. Andressa’s commitment to promoting gender diversity in tech makes her a valuable nominee for the Women in Tech Network.

The Services

diversiData is an initiative that aims to demystify the world of data, diversity, and culture. It offers free educational content, workshops, and podcasts related to data careers and diversity.  It plays a crucial role in advancing girls’ education and gender equality through digital learning.

As the pandemic led to increased use of digital technologies in education, it also revealed staggering gender gaps in access to and use of digital technology worldwide. UNICEF estimates that 11.2 million girls and young women may drop out or lack access to school due to the pandemic. However, innovative solutions are now within reach, from high-tech to low-tech, enabling quality learning for girls. Additionally, historically marginalized groups, including women of color, face compounding challenges in STEM pathways. diversiData aims to address these disparities by providing data-driven support to students, ensuring their success both in the classroom and beyond.

Here’s what one can find on diversiData:

YouTube Channel: The diversiData YouTube channel features videos on topics like data analysis, career transitions, and workplace diversity. You’ll find content that’s 100% free and designed to help you learn more about these areas.

Instagram and TikTok: Andressa Freires shares mentorship opportunities, accessible content, and courses related to diversiData on her Instagram and TikTok.

Diversity Data Platform: Additionally, there’s an online diversity data platform called Diversidata that provides advice on gathering and using diversity data across different jurisdictions. It guides organizations through a series of questions to input their data collection requirements.

All in a Day’s Work

Andressa’s working style can be encapsulated in three core principles: simplicity, transparency, and impact. She believes that keeping things simple and clear is essential for effective problem-solving and communication. Transparency ensures that everyone is on the same page, fostering trust and collaboration. The impact is crucial because our work should make a meaningful difference.

Andressa thrives in team environments and loves collaborating with others. While her approach is straightforward, she finds that involving her team in discussions and deliveries significantly enhances the quality and meaningfulness of their work. This collaborative effort ensures that the final product is impactful for those who receive it. She also places a high value on the well-being of her coworkers, as she has experienced the challenges of mental health issues in the demanding AI market, particularly as a person who is a part of many diverse groups.

“My workplace is everywhere: it’s in my room where ideas take shape in solitude, in the favelas where potential waits to be unlocked, in conference rooms buzzing with collaborative energy, in classrooms where knowledge blooms, in WeWorks fostering innovation, and even within companies striving for progress. Wherever I find purpose, that’s where I belong,” shares Andressa.

When she encounters new challenges or unfamiliar tasks, Andressa approaches them logically, much like solving a puzzle. She breaks down each problem into manageable pieces and tackles them one by one. This methodical approach allows her to address each component effectively. She also believes in thorough documentation, ensuring that everyone involved understands the project’s status and direction. This practice not only promotes clarity but also aids in future reference and learning.

Communication is another crucial element of her work style. If Andressa encounters something she doesn’t know, she reaches out to someone who can teach her. Conversely, if she learns something new, she’s eager to share that knowledge with her team. “This exchange of information fosters a supportive and knowledgeable work environment. By continuously sharing discoveries and insights, we collectively ensure the success and health of any project we undertake,” believes Andressa.

Simplicity, transparency, and measurable impact are vital for businesses. Simplicity reduces complexity and enhances efficiency. Transparency builds trust and fosters a collaborative culture. Measuring impact ensures that our efforts are aligned with our goals and make a meaningful difference. These principles are not just theoretical but are integral to Andressa’s work ethic and practice, driving both personal and professional success.

Navigating Challenges

There have been many incredible projects that Andressa had the opportunity to participate in. One of the most challenging yet rewarding was leading a diversity initiative involving over 1,700 participants inside PicPay. This project involved organizing live podcast events for thousands of viewers engaging with everyone from operational staff to the board of directors, and even reporting directly to investors. “Creating a diversity project from scratch required a lot of growth, both personally and professionally, as I navigated complex dynamics and honed my ability to advocate for and implement impactful changes,” shares Andressa.

One of the projects that she will always keep in her heart is a project called DAT[A]FRO, which Andressa did when she was working at PicPay. This initiative was a training program in data analysis and artificial intelligence specifically for Black individuals across Brazil. Out of more than a thousand applicants, they selected 20 participants for an intensive course. Of those 20, nine were hired. Andressa followed the class from start to finish, from conducting interviews to providing mentorship and answering questions throughout the learning process. This project allowed her to build lasting relationships with many of her students, who even gifted her a special doll with their class name on it. This project is a source of immense pride for her because it genuinely transformed lives.

Another project that Andressa is incredibly proud of is diversiData, her social impact company. Over the past three years, they have managed to generate significant impact with very limited resources—no investments or monetary partnerships, just a lot of hard work and dedication. Seeing the lives they’ve changed, mentoring hundreds of people, and conducting workshops and courses for thousands in the tech field is an incomparable feeling. The project has been already awarded nationally and internationally, by MIT Sloan Review, Instituto Anga, and WomenTech Network.

From these projects, Andressa has learned several key lessons. The first, focused on diversity, taught her the importance of communication, defending, and selling a beneficial project that brings real social and financial impact. These projects helped her improve her communication skills across all levels of her company, which has been beneficial both in her entrepreneurial endeavors and in her professional life and helped her how to show diversity + impact in the best way possible.

Another crucial lesson she has learned is that if your project or product is not impacting lives, something is wrong. Since these significant projects, Andressa has strived to ensure that everything she does has a meaningful impact—just as her life was transformed through scholarships and community support. “Today, for my students and those who consume the products I offer, I aim to provide a complete, unique, and empathetic experience that demonstrates true social, economic, or life-changing impact,” she asserts.

“Valuing others and persevering through challenges are crucial. The process may be difficult, but it is incredibly rewarding to open windows of opportunity for more people like you. These experiences have taught me that no matter how tough the journey, the impact we can make on others’ lives is worth every effort. By not giving up, we create pathways for more people to succeed and thrive, just as we have. This process of evolving and inspiring others, despite the difficulties, is what keeps me motivated and driven,” feels Andressa.

Staying in Tune with Trends

In the next five years, Andressa sees several emerging trends that will significantly shape the fields of AI, AI ethics, and education. One of the most transformative trends in AI is the advancement of generative models and their applications across various sectors. These models are becoming increasingly sophisticated, enabling more nuanced and human-like interactions and opening up new possibilities for automation and creativity.

AI ethics is another crucial area that will gain even more importance. As AI systems become more integrated into our daily lives, ensuring they are developed and used responsibly will be paramount. This includes addressing issues such as bias, transparency, and accountability to ensure that AI benefits all segments of society fairly and equitably.

In education, Andressa believes that the use of AI to personalize learning experiences will continue to grow. AI can help tailor educational content to individual learning styles and paces, making education more accessible and effective for diverse populations. This trend will be especially impactful in creating more inclusive learning environments and bridging educational gaps.

To prepare her organization, diversiData, for these emerging trends, Andressa focuses on continuous learning and proactive engagement with the latest developments in these fields. She invests a significant amount of time in studying and staying updated on new advancements in AI and AI ethics. Attending national and international conferences and industry events is a key part of her strategy. These platforms provide invaluable opportunities to learn about cutting-edge research, network with other professionals, and share the participants’ experiences and insights.

Additionally, Andressa believes in the power of sharing knowledge. She regularly disseminates what she learns through courses, workshops, and mentorship programs. “By educating our audience and those who consume AI products, we can foster a more informed and responsible use of AI technologies. This approach not only helps in preparing our organization for future trends but also contributes to the broader goal of creating a more ethical and inclusive tech landscape,” she shares.

“Understanding and anticipating these trends is essential for driving innovation and maintaining our relevance in the rapidly evolving tech world. By staying informed, actively participating in the dialogue around these issues, and prioritizing education and ethical considerations, I ensure that diversiData is well-equipped to navigate and contribute to the future of AI and education,” says Andressa.

Initiatives for Equality

As a successful woman in leadership, Andressa is deeply passionate about initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion both within her organization and the tech industry at large. The importance of diversity in the workplace cannot be overstated. Research consistently shows that diverse teams drive better business outcomes.

“According to a study by McKinsey, companies in the top quartile for gender diversity on executive teams were 21% more likely to outperform on profitability and 27% more likely to have superior value creation. Yet, despite these clear benefits, the tech industry still struggles with diversity. Women, particularly women of color, remain significantly underrepresented. For example, a report by the National Center for Women & Information Technology found that women held only 26% of professional computing jobs in 2019, with even lower representation at the leadership level,” quotes Andressa.

At diversiData, promoting diversity and inclusion is at the heart of Andressa’s mission. One initiative she is particularly proud of is the special mentorship program, which pairs experienced professionals with individuals from underrepresented groups to provide guidance, support, and career development. This program has already impacted hundreds of lives, helping mentees navigate the tech industry and advance their careers.

“Creating a diverse environment where everyone feels free to be themselves is crucial for both personal well-being and professional success. When people can bring their authentic selves to work, they are more engaged, motivated, and productive. This sense of belonging fosters innovation and creativity, as diverse perspectives lead to more robust problem-solving and decision-making processes,” insists Andressa.

In a plural environment, the products and services we create are better aligned with the needs of a diverse customer base. When a team reflects the diversity of its customers, it can anticipate and address a broader range of needs and preferences, leading to higher customer satisfaction. This is particularly important in the tech industry, where user experience can make or break a product.

To promote these values, Andressa actively participates in and organizes events that highlight the importance of diversity and inclusion. By speaking at conferences, hosting workshops, and collaborating with other organizations, she aims to raise awareness and drive change across the industry. Additionally, she ensures that diversiData’s hiring practices prioritize diversity, seeking to build teams that are as varied and dynamic as the communities they serve.

“Ultimately, promoting diversity and inclusion is not just about meeting quotas or checking boxes. It’s about creating an environment where everyone has the opportunity to succeed and where diverse voices can drive innovation and excellence. This commitment to diversity and inclusion is essential for building a more equitable and successful tech industry,” emphasizes Andressa.

Future Commitments

In the next few years, Andressa and her team are committed to driving significant growth and impact through their small yet ambitious edtech company. Currently, they are in the process of securing investors to expand their offerings, which include increasing the number of courses, providing free materials such as computers and books, and offering mentorship programs for its students, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. diversiData’s ultimate aim is to scale its operations to positively impact thousands of lives through technology.

“Effective planning is paramount to achieving our goals. We understand the importance of learning from the experiences of others who have successfully navigated similar paths. Seeking guidance from experienced mentors and industry experts will help us refine our strategies, make informed decisions, and ensure sustainable growth,” shares Andressa.

The edtech sector is poised for substantial growth in the coming years. According to research by HolonIQ, global edtech investments reached $16.1 billion in 2020, highlighting a growing trend towards digital transformation in education. This growth presents a significant opportunity for innovative companies like ours to make a meaningful impact (source: HolonIQ EdTech Global Funding Report).

What sets Andressa’s edtech company apart is its steadfast commitment to placing people and purpose at the forefront. Unlike many in the industry who solely focus on profitability, diversiData prioritizes creating inclusive educational experiences that foster personal and professional growth. Studies have shown that personalized and inclusive learning environments lead to better student outcomes and societal benefits.

“By focusing on building a strong community and prioritizing the happiness and success of our students, we aim to create a lasting impact. Our approach not only aligns with current educational trends but also contributes to the broader movement towards equitable access to quality education,” says Andressa.

In conclusion, with meticulous planning, leveraging industry insights, and remaining steadfast in their commitment to their values, Andressa, and the team are confident that their company will expand its influence and make a meaningful difference in the education sector.

Drawing Inspiration to Rise and Grow

Continuing to grow and develop professionally is a core commitment for Andressa, driven by a multifaceted approach to learning and self-improvement. Mentorship plays a pivotal role in her journey; receiving feedback from those she works with helps her refine her skills and perspectives. Additionally, Andressa places a strong emphasis on continuous learning through extensive coursework and voracious reading across a wide range of subjects. This constant pursuit of knowledge not only keeps her informed but also enhances her ability to innovate and adapt in a rapidly changing world.

Attending national and international conferences is another integral part of Andressa’s professional growth strategy. These events provide invaluable opportunities to update her knowledge, connect with industry peers, and share insights gained from her day-to-day experiences. It’s through these interactions that she stays abreast of emerging trends and best practices, ensuring that her contributions remain relevant and impactful.

As she prepares herself to lead and make a meaningful impact through her work, Andressa recognizes the importance of grounding decisions in data-driven insights. The research underscores the significance of leadership development in driving organizational success and employee engagement. Studies by Harvard Business Review emphasize the critical role of continuous learning and leadership preparation in shaping effective leaders who can navigate complexities and inspire teams.

Among the many leaders and thinkers who inspire Andressa, two stand out as key references in her field of expertise: Joy Buolawimni and Nina da Hora. She has had the privilege of meeting both individuals and even sharing a stage with Nina. Joy Buolawimni is renowned for her groundbreaking work in educational equity and technology integration, while Nina da Hora has made significant strides in community-driven innovation and entrepreneurship. Their dedication to advancing meaningful change through technology and education serves as a constant source of inspiration for Andressa.

Joy Buolawimni’s advocacy for inclusive education and digital empowerment resonates deeply with her own values, while Nina da Hora’s entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to social impact motivate her to push boundaries in her own endeavors. Learning from their experiences and insights continues to shape Andressa’s professional journey, reinforcing her resolve to lead with purpose and make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Message for the Young Guns

To aspiring entrepreneurs, Andressa says that she knows the road is not easy. But here are some key pieces of advice that she has found invaluable in her own journey:

  • Courage: Embrace courage as your companion. Starting a business requires taking risks and stepping outside your comfort zone. Believe in your vision and be willing to push through uncertainty and challenges.
  • Information: Knowledge is power. Invest time in thoroughly researching your market, understanding industry trends, and learning from the successes and failures of others. Informed decisions are the foundation of a sustainable business.
  • Endurance: Entrepreneurship is a marathon, not a sprint. Be prepared for setbacks and disappointments. Develop resilience to bounce back stronger and keep moving forward despite obstacles.
  • Focus: Stay laser-focused on your core objectives and avoid getting distracted by shiny new opportunities. Define clear goals and prioritize tasks that align with your long-term vision.
  • Seek the right people: Surround yourself with mentors, advisors, and team members who complement your strengths and share your passion. Collaborate with people who bring diverse perspectives and expertise to the table.
  • Impact people: Ultimately, the success of your venture hinges on the positive impact it has on others. Whether it’s solving a problem, improving lives, or creating meaningful opportunities, keep the human element at the forefront of everything you do.

“Remember, entrepreneurship is a journey of continuous learning and growth. Stay adaptable, stay hungry for knowledge, and never lose sight of the profound impact you have the potential to make in the world. With courage, knowledge, endurance, focus, the right team, and a commitment to impact, you can turn your entrepreneurial dreams into reality,” says Andressa.

Goals in Sight

The next big goals for Andressa and her company are deeply rooted in expanding their impact on underrepresented groups through education and technology. Over the past three years, diversiData has reached over thousands of individuals, but they are determined to scale their efforts even further. Their aim is to generate more opportunities and profoundly transform lives, leveraging the transformative power of education and technology.

The importance of this endeavor is underscored by the rapid growth and potential of the edtech sector. Globally, the edtech market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.1%, reaching approximately $404 billion by 2025 (source: Research and Markets). This growth not only highlights the increasing demand for innovative educational solutions but also underscores the significant impact technology can have on expanding access to quality education.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a key focus area for diversiData as it holds immense potential to personalize learning experiences, improve educational outcomes, and bridge gaps in access. AI in education is expected to grow significantly, with the AI in Education market forecasted to reach $10.84 billion by 2027, growing at a CAGR of 36.1% (source: Meticulous Research). By harnessing AI, the company can tailor educational content to individual needs, enhance teaching methods, and provide personalized support to learners, thereby maximizing its impact.

To tackle the challenges ahead and achieve their ambitious goals, team diversiData is actively seeking support from investors, companies, and communities through strategic partnerships. These collaborations are crucial not only for financial backing but also for accessing expertise, resources, and networks that can accelerate its growth and amplify its impact.

Furthermore, inspiring other communities and individuals to embrace education and technology is integral to diversiData’s mission. “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” – Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman was an extraordinary woman who exemplified courage, resilience, and determination in the face of immense adversity. Born into slavery in the early 19th century, she not only escaped to freedom herself but also risked her life numerous times to lead others to liberty through the Underground Railroad. She was a fearless abolitionist, humanitarian, and suffragist who dedicated her life to fighting for justice and equality.

For Andressa, Harriet Tubman’s words resonate deeply because they encapsulate the essence of hope and empowerment. She believed in the power of dreams and the ability of individuals to make a profound impact on the world, no matter their circumstances. Her unwavering commitment to helping others, particularly those suffering from oppression and injustice, is incredibly inspiring.

When Andressa reflects on her legacy, she is moved by Harriet’s empathy and compassion. She saw those who suffered as if they were her own family, and that compassion drove her to take action and effect real change. It’s a reminder to Andressa that our dreams and ambitions should not only benefit ourselves but also uplift and empower those around us.

“Harriet Tubman’s life story teaches us that with strength, patience, and passion, we can overcome obstacles and achieve our aspirations. She embodies the power of resilience and the belief that each of us has the potential to make a difference. Her legacy continues to inspire me to dream big, work tirelessly, and strive to create a better world for all,” feels Andressa.
