Google has joined forces with the U.K. government and UK aviation industry to launch Operation Blue Skies, a new initiative using artificial intelligence to reduce the climate impact of aircraft contrails across a major section of the North Atlantic airspace.

Contrails are white cloud-like trails that form behind aircraft when water vapor in jet exhaust condenses around particles such as soot at high altitudes. Under cold and humid atmospheric conditions, some contrails can persist and expand into cloud layers that trap heat. Researchers estimate that contrail warming accounts for a significant share of aviation’s overall climate impact.

AI to Identify High-Risk Flight Zones

Under the initiative, AI models will analyze satellite imagery and historical flight data to identify areas where aircraft are most likely to create persistent contrails. The system will then combine these insights with weather forecasts to predict contrail-sensitive regions in advance.

The resulting forecasts will be shared with the U.K.’s National Air Traffic Services (NATS), allowing air traffic controllers to guide selected UK aviation industry around areas where contrails are most likely to form. Rather than requiring major changes to flight operations, the approach will rely on small, targeted adjustments to aircraft routes.

NATS will oversee airspace management, traffic control and safety assessments throughout the trial.

30-Month Trial in North Atlantic

The 30-month project will focus on the Shanwick airspace, part of the eastern North Atlantic corridor. Google estimates that this region accounts for around 5% of global contrail warming.

The trial will include two four-month operational periods during which aircraft will be actively redirected. Around 10,000 flights are expected to operate through the corridor during these test windows, with approximately 1% to 5% receiving route adjustments.

The project will also involve the U.K.’s Met Office, Contrails.org, Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge. UK aviation industry and their roles will include weather forecasting, trial design, data analysis and independent assessment of the initiative’s climate impact.

£5 Million Investment

Operation Blue Skies is expected to cost approximately £5 million. The U.K. Department for Transport will contribute £2.65 million, while Google’s U.K. subsidiary will provide £1.4 million in AI research, engineering expertise and computing resources on a pro-bono basis.

Google hopes the project will demonstrate that AI-driven contrail avoidance can be safely integrated into real-world UK aviation industry and establish a practical blueprint for reducing aviation’s climate impact through smarter airspace management.
