Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has declared that artificial general intelligence (AGI) has arrived, pointing to OpenAI newly launched GPT-6 Astra as a major milestone in the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence.
Huang made the claim in a post on X while congratulating OpenAI on the release of Astra, writing that the progression from ChatGPT to OpenAI’s o1 model and now Astra had taken just four years. He also highlighted the enormous Nvidia computing infrastructure used to train the latest system.
A New Benchmark for AI Capabilities
OpenAI describes GPT-6 Astra as its most intelligent and aligned model to date, with advances across computer use, software engineering, cybersecurity, scientific research and professional work.
The company says Astra achieved a 98% score on FrontierMath Tier 4, 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3 and 100% on ExploitBench. It can also perform complex computer-based workflows, including navigating websites, generating software, analysing data and producing professional documents and presentations. The model was initially rolled out to a limited group of organisations before being made available across ChatGPT’s Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise tiers, as well as through the OpenAI API and cloud platforms.
Nvidia’s Massive Computing Role
Huang said GPT-6 Astra was trained using more than 100,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell NVLink72 systems, underscoring the extraordinary computing resources now required to develop frontier AI models. He also said another 400,000 Nvidia GPUs are coming online, signalling expectations of continued expansion in AI computing infrastructure.
The AGI Debate Intensifies
Despite Huang’s declaration, the arrival of AGI remains open to debate. There is no universally accepted definition of AGI, and the threshold for determining whether an AI system has reached human-level general intelligence remains contested.
OpenAI President Greg Brockman has similarly suggested that Astra could mark the beginning of the AGI era, while critics have questioned whether current benchmarks and capabilities are sufficient to support such a sweeping conclusion. Still, Astra’s combination of reasoning, autonomy and computer-use capabilities represents a significant step in the AI race — and Huang’s statement has added fresh momentum to the debate over whether the industry has entered the age of AGI.
