U.S. Futures Trade Mixed

U.S. stock futures traded mixed late Thursday as investors assessed July’s softer-than-expected producer price index (PPI), which eased concerns that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates in September.

Dow futures gained 0.09%, while S&P 500 futures advanced 0.04%. Nasdaq-100 futures, however, slipped 0.08% at 10:48 p.m. EDT. The mixed performance reflected continued caution among investors despite signs that inflationary pressures may be moderating.

The latest PPI data arrived a day after the release of July’s consumer price index (CPI), which showed headline consumer prices rising 0.1% month over month, broadly in line with market expectations. Together, the readings have strengthened expectations that the Fed may have greater flexibility in its upcoming policy decisions.

Major Indexes Close Higher

U.S. equities ended Thursday’s regular session on a positive note, with all three major benchmark indexes posting gains. The S&P 500 Futures Nasdaq Composite led the advance, rising 0.81%, while the S&P 500 gained 0.65% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.13%.

The S&P 500 also closed at a record high after reaching an intraday peak of 7,816.70, underscoring continued investor optimism despite uncertainty surrounding monetary policy and economic growth.

Technology stocks provided additional support to the broader market, helping the Nasdaq outperform its peers during the session.

PPI Signals Easing Price Pressures

Inflation remained the central focus for markets this week as investors closely monitored data for clues about the Fed’s next move. July’s PPI was flat month S&P 500 Futures over month, falling short of economists’ expectations for a 0.2% increase.

The annual producer inflation rate also slowed sharply, reaching 4.7% for the 12 months through July, compared with 5.5% in June. The decline indicates that wholesale price pressures are easing, potentially reducing the urgency for additional monetary tightening.

With both consumer and producer inflation showing signs of moderation, investors are increasingly focused on whether the data will support a more accommodative Federal Reserve stance. Markets are now likely to scrutinize upcoming employment, inflation and economic activity indicators for further clues about the September policy outlook.
