Amazon Game Studios Steps Back From MMOs in Strategic Shift

Amazon Game Studios Steps Back From MMOs | CIO Times Magazine

Amazon Game Studios is scaling back its involvement in the massively multiplayer online game market, returning Western publishing and live-operations responsibilities for Lost Ark and Throne and Liberty to their respective developers. The move marks another step in the company’s broader strategy to reduce its focus on MMOs and concentrate resources on other gaming opportunities.

Publishing Duties Return to Developers

Amazon will transition Western territory operations for Lost Ark back to Smilegate and Throne and Liberty back to NC. Both titles have built established player communities under Amazon’s publishing operations, making the transition a significant change in the games’ business structures.

In a statement, Amazon Game Studios said the decision was part of its “continued strategic evolution,” while expressing appreciation for the development teams and communities supporting both games. The company also said it would work to ensure a smooth transition for players as responsibilities move back to the original studios.

The decision does not signal an immediate shutdown of either title. Instead, the developers will once again assume greater control over their games’ Western live operations.

Part of a Broader Gaming Reset

Amazon’s decision follows a wider restructuring of its gaming business. The company’s games division experienced significant layoffs last year as Amazon implemented broader corporate cost reductions and reassessed its investment priorities.

The latest move reflects an already established shift away from committing additional resources to the MMO segment. While MMOs can generate recurring revenue through long-term player engagement, they also require substantial ongoing investment in content, infrastructure and live-service support.

By stepping away from publishing responsibilities for two major MMO titles, Amazon can redirect resources toward areas it views as offering stronger long-term potential.

Focus Turns to AAA and Cloud Gaming

Amazon Game Studios is now concentrating on previously announced AAA projects, including upcoming Tomb Raider titles. The company is also looking to expand its Luna cloud-gaming service, supported by party-style “game night” experiences and a broader portfolio of licensed games.

The strategy represents a more diversified approach to Amazon’s gaming ambitions. Rather than building its future around large-scale online worlds, the company appears increasingly focused on premium game development, licensed properties and cloud-based entertainment.

For Lost Ark and Throne and Liberty, the transition puts future Western operations back in the hands of their original developers, while Amazon reshapes its gaming portfolio around a narrower set of strategic priorities.
