CMA CGM has completed an 8,016-tonne biomethanol bunkering operation at Shanghai Port, supplying enough alternative fuel to power the CMA CGM OSMIUM on its voyage from China to the East Coast of South America.
The French container shipping group described the operation as the world’s largest single-batch biomethanol bunkering. CMA CGM estimates that using the fuel throughout the voyage could reduce emissions by the equivalent of around 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
Full Voyage Covered in One Bunkering
The volume supplied is sufficient for CMA CGM OSMIUM to complete the entire trade route without requiring additional biomethanol during the voyage. The operation therefore represents a full-voyage fuel delivery rather than a conventional partial refuelling.
Loading more than 8,000 tonnes in a single operation also highlights the growing infrastructure requirements associated with methanol-capable vessels. Large container ships consume substantial quantities of fuel, making adequate storage, supply availability and coordinated bunkering increasingly important as shipping companies expand the use of lower-carbon fuels.
CMA CGM did not disclose the vessel’s cargo capacity, the time required to complete the bunkering or the methodology used to calculate the projected emissions reduction.
Shanghai Strengthens Alternative-Fuel Infrastructure
The operation was conducted in collaboration with Shanghai Electric Group and Shanghai International Port Group, the operator of Shanghai Port. The partnership brought together the shipping line, fuel supplier and port operator to execute the large-scale alternative-fuel delivery.
Such coordination is critical for commercial bunkering, particularly when fuel operations must be completed within tight vessel schedules alongside cargo handling and other port activities.
As one of Asia’s leading container hubs, Shanghai serves as an important departure point for services linking China with South American markets. Completing the biomethanol delivery before departure allows the vessel to undertake its long ocean passage with its fuel requirements secured.
Biomethanol Gains Momentum
The operation demonstrates how biomethanol is moving beyond pilot projects and limited fuel trials toward larger-scale maritime applications. It shows that ports can potentially supply the quantities required for intercontinental container voyages when production, storage and bunkering infrastructure are aligned.
CMA CGM said the project supports the development of lower-carbon marine fuel solutions. However, the company did not disclose details about the biomethanol’s production pathway, certification, cost or plans for future large-scale bunkering operations at Shanghai.
