A Dynamic Leader

As the Chairman and CEO of Digital Global Systems (DGS), Fernando Murias has been driving the company with a passion for technology and innovation. His background as managing partner of PwC’s Washington, DC, office provided a solid foundation for understanding complex systems, which was crucial as he transitioned into leadership roles. His early career involved working in mergers and acquisitions, with a focus on technology development and strategy. This is where he gained invaluable experience in managing teams and driving projects from conception to completion.

A pivotal moment in his career was joining DGS, where Fernando was tasked with developing the business plan and capital raise strategy. Besides being a significant moment, it was also a challenging one as he was entrusted with transitioning DGS from a research-focused organization to one that is now poised for commercial production.

This shift required not only a change in DGS’s business strategy but also in the organizational mindset. To overcome this challenge, Fernando focused on building a strong leadership team that could drive this transition, ensuring that they had the right talent and resources in place to scale their operations. He also placed a strong emphasis on fostering a learning culture within the engineering team, which allowed them to adapt quickly and effectively to the new demands of commercial production.

“Collaborating closely with the existing team, I played a key role in expanding our engineering footprint and structuring the organization, which paved the way for my current leadership role,” he says.

Fostering Innovation & Positive Culture

What sets Fernando apart as a dynamic leader is his commitment to fostering innovation and building a collaborative environment where ideas can flourish. He believes in leading by example, maintaining transparency, and ensuring that every team member feels empowered to contribute to the organization’s success. His guiding principles include integrity, adaptability, and a relentless focus on continuous improvement.

For Fernando, fostering innovation and adaptability within DGS starts with creating an environment where experimentation is encouraged, and failure is seen as a learning opportunity. DGS has implemented processes that allow for rapid prototyping and iteration, which helps it stay ahead of the curve in a fast-paced industry.

“Additionally, we invest heavily in our team’s development, ensuring that they have the skills and knowledge needed to navigate the complexities of our field. Open communication and cross-functional collaboration are also key elements in driving innovation within the organization,” shares Fernando.

Cultivating a positive organizational culture at DGS starts with a strong emphasis on communication and transparency. Fernando ensures that every team member feels valued and has a clear understanding of how their work contributes to the overall mission. DGS also promotes a collaborative environment by encouraging cross-functional teamwork and providing opportunities for team members to share their ideas and insights. Recognizing and celebrating achievements, no matter how small is another way they foster a positive culture and keep their team motivated and engaged.

Significant Achievements

Fernando considers his most significant professional achievement to be the successful capital raise of $100M for DGS. This funding was critical in allowing them to invest in their R&D efforts and develop a strong patent portfolio that positions them as a global leader in spectrum management. Securing this level of investment was not an easy task, but it has been instrumental in enabling DGS to innovate and drive forward the vision for the company.

Significant achievements come with risks and tough decisions. Fernando also had to make some very tough decisions during the transition of DGS from an R&D-focused company to one ready for commercial production. The decision to shift the focus required careful consideration of resources, talent, and market opportunities. He approached this decision by gathering input from his leadership team, conducting a thorough market analysis, and weighing the risks and benefits. Ultimately, the decision was driven by their long-term vision for the company, and while it was challenging, it has proven to be the right path for their growth and success.

Fernando is particularly proud of their recent advancements in AI for spectrum optimization. This initiative has not only positioned DGS at the forefront of addressing the global demand for efficient spectrum usage but will also significantly impact the telecommunications industry. The AI technologies they are developing are set to revolutionize how quickly usable RF data can be made available, making wireless networks more efficient and accessible, which is crucial for the future of connectivity.

“The success of this project underscores our commitment to innovation and our ability to lead in a rapidly evolving industry,” he says.

Honing Leadership Skills

Fernando believes that every dynamic leader should possess a strong vision, the ability to inspire and motivate their team, and a high level of emotional intelligence. It’s important to be adaptable and open to change, as the business landscape is constantly evolving. Effective communication is also crucial, as it ensures that everyone is aligned and working toward the same goals. Lastly, a dynamic leader must be committed to continuous learning and self-improvement, always seeking out new ways to grow and develop as a leader.

As a leader, he makes continuous learning a core part of his daily routine. He regularly engages with industry experts, attends conferences, and reads extensively to stay updated on the latest trends and technologies. Mentorship is another key strategy he employs, both as a mentor and a mentee, as it provides invaluable insights and learning opportunities. He also sets aside time for reflection and self-assessment, which helps him identify areas for improvement and set goals for his development as a leader.

Envisioning the Future

Fernando envisions the future of leadership being increasingly focused on adaptability and emotional intelligence. As the business landscape becomes more complex and interconnected, leaders will need to be more agile and responsive to change. He plans to continue evolving and adapting by staying committed to continuous learning and being open to new perspectives and ideas.

“Additionally, I will focus on nurturing the next generation of leaders within DGS, ensuring that they are equipped with the skills and mindset needed to navigate the challenges of the future,” concludes Fernando.

Greg Wilson: An Experienced Operational and Strategic Leader

Innovative and dynamic Senior Digital Leader, Greg Wilson has an extensive operational CIO/CEO/CTO background in Public Sector Government, National Security, and Defence.

He started his professional journey as a commissioned officer in the British Army with the Royal Corps of Signals, where he was responsible for delivering IT, Cyber, and Telecommunications capabilities to every part of the Army and the Joint Force. During his time in the military, Greg specialized in procurement and digital technology. He also continued with his studies and gained a bachelor’s and master’s degree in computing, became Chartered in IT, Engineering, and Management as well attending the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School. Whilst in the military, he was deployed on operational tours around the world and ended his career in the Army HQ (Headquarters) responsible for digital transformation and delivery of digital technologies.

Throughout his career, Greg has had the opportunity to lead transformational efforts from a sub-unit perspective all the way up to the pan-Army level as a Brigadier General. He has thrived in environments that involve identifying and solving various wide ranging from thorny concerns to, and at times, politically sensitive and complex issues. He has enjoyed solving ambiguous problems and devising ways to drive positive impact. These collective experiences have also contributed to the success enjoyed in his current role at Microsoft, where he helps Governments pursue their digital journeys to the Cloud and, more recently, with AI to help address some of society’s biggest challenges.

Cherishing Leadership

Greg’s working style is one where he works directly with customers along their digital transformation journey and partners with them on how to innovate and bring resolution to existing problems. He enjoys leading and shaping solutions. He regularly engages with employees which allows him to know people, their strengths, weaknesses, and how they can add value to the team. In global roles, it helps with building an inclusive space that is diverse and accommodating of others, especially given the inherent cultural differences that exist in the world today. “Fairness, trust, and integrity are key traits for me in leaders and have underpinned my approach in both the military and Microsoft,” he says.

Throughout his career in both public and private sectors, driving transformation/entrepreneurship by inspiring and motivating teams towards a collective goal is something Greg finds rewarding and shapes his work ethic. At the same time, he enjoys coaching and mentoring teams to grow their technical skills and understanding. “It goes without saying that within a global role, the various time zones drive my working patterns. That said, it is the global aspect I most enjoy as I get to work with people from diverse cultures and nationalities,” he shares.

Facing Challenges and Taking Tough Decisions

The biggest challenge Greg faced was in the military while taking his Regiment of 1500+ on operations. The responsibility of ensuring that the soldiers under his command were well trained for combat drives the pace before they were deployed. The next aspect which comes with the heavy weight borne of operational command, was ensuring they all delivered on the mission when deployed. “I was fortunate that I had an excellent, collegiate, and highly skilled Regiment so despite the challenges and demands asked of us, the Regiment performed superbly. When I reflect on the decisions, I made in command I am thankful for the training I received and both the trust and support of both my superiors and the soldiers in my charge,” he says.

Preparation, intensive training, and planning, as well as collaboration, were key for him to overcome challenges. Drawing a parallel with the industry, he says that the response to challenges possesses similar underlying traits – how you build and prepare an inclusive team to consistently deliver the desired outcomes requires intentional investment in preparation, training, strategy, and then teamwork to execute successfully in an accountable and trusted manner.

Tough decisions, says Greg, typically take place when it impacts people adversely. As he has been responsible for several transformation programs and organizational restructuring, he has witnessed the significant impact it can have on people’s families and lives. However, achieving the most ideal outcome by doing the right thing, and not necessarily the easiest thing, does take making those tough calls and focused prioritization. To ensure the decisions are the best possible for a situation ensuring understanding of the issues, detailed planning, discussion of options and sensitive execution is key. “The toughest decisions I have made have generally been around reorganizations where jobs are lost yet we have had to adapt to keep our competitive edge and evolve with technology,” he shares.

Being with Microsoft

For Greg, it is three things – the Culture, the People, and the leading technological advancements at Microsoft. The balance of these three points, per him, makes Microsoft a great organization. One that he is privileged to work in. The CEO Satya Nadella has charted a hugely successful course that has transformed Microsoft and driven a persistent quest for creativity, relevance, and collaboration. The collective efforts have turned it into a company that helps businesses and Governments to achieve their goals and missions. “Under our cultural renaissance and our one Microsoft approach, we are leading the AI Era. It’s truly an exciting time to be part of Microsoft,” confesses Greg.

Microsoft has won several awards for its technology and is globally recognized as a Technology Leader across many digital areas. Its key technology areas are Cloud Computing, AI, and Data & Analytics services that empower people and organizations to achieve more. Microsoft is a consistently recognized leader across a raft of Gartner Magic Quadrants. Greg, on a personal note, has been awarded military operational service medals, business leader and Industry Project Manager Awards and promotions which is always nice to receive as well as professional accreditation and recognition of his skillset. However, whilst individuals, and the leaders you report to, receive awards, he believes it is always the team that has worked with him and helped deliver the solution that truly warrants the award and is equally deserving of recognition and reward as a leader he ensures that all receive the requisite recognition, where appropriate.

Being an Efficient Decision Maker and Leader

When stuck on a decision, Greg generally consults to get more information and uses trusted mentors to try to step away from being too close to the problem. That way, he can approach it more holistically and strategically as well. He also asks himself if he really needs to make the decision now or if can he sleep over it. What is the time imperative? Either way, he suggests, one should not prevaricate, and when ready to make the decision, he aims to create clarity (which is one of Microsoft’s leadership principles) and underpin the decision with the logic behind it.

Speaking about micromanagement, he says that empowerment is the key to unlocking innovation and creativity in people. In the military, he learned the mission command method. In essence, the premise is – to set the objective (the what), reinforce the rationale (the why), and empower individuals and the team to determine the plan (the how). At Microsoft, it is equally true, and the teams and individuals are empowered and supported to determine how best to deliver success based on the corporate strategy. To help support this empowerment, clear roles, responsibility, and accountability; as well as feedback mechanisms and guard rails are required to achieve a shared objective.

Looking Forward to an Exciting Future

Since joining Microsoft, initially on the National Security team, and then lately on the Public Sector Government Leadership team, Greg’s key achievements have been the transformation to focus on worldwide Government requirements, including helping them migrate off legacy technology (for customers that use on-premises and air-gapped infrastructure) to the hyperscale Microsoft Cloud. The transition to the Cloud is a foundation for Governments that aim to deliver the much-needed and to be fair now the expected level of digital services for their nations. Reducing technical debt for Governments and empowering them to leverage cutting-edge capabilities from Microsoft and its partners, to unlock the benefits the revolution of AI has brought, is what Greg is proud to evangelize to achieve exponential benefits with Governments around the world.

Looking into the future, Greg believes that AI will impact everyone and the creativity it will drive as we go forward with new markets and technologies is something to look forward to. Two noteworthy technologies coming to the market now are Microsoft Copilot and Microsoft Fabric. Copilot combines the power of large language models (LLMs) with an organization’s data – all in the flow of work – to convert users’ words into one of the most powerful productivity tools on the planet. It works alongside well-known Microsoft 365 apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and provides real-time intelligent assistance, enabling users to enhance their creativity, productivity, and skills. The other game changer is Microsoft Fabric which unifies data sources. Fabric is the future. Fabric runs entire data estates: departmental projects as well as the largest data warehouse, data lake houses, and data science projects. It unifies data for the AI era.

“There are genuinely exciting times ahead. This provides so much potential to work with Governments to rapidly improve productivity and services. This is the stuff that gets me out of bed every morning to help influence our work that makes a difference in people’s lives,” concludes Greg.

Nicholas McQuire: Helping Microsoft Shape the Future of the Cloud

Busy incubating the next generation of growth businesses

For Nick McQuire, Director of Product Management in Microsoft’s Strategic Missions and Technologies (SMT) division, the organisation’s business acceleration arm, the path to this point has not been a predictable one. But working in the area of future technology innovation and business acceleration never is.  Microsoft’s SMT division sits at the nexus between its long-term foundational research in Microsoft Research on one hand and its current solution portfolio on the other and the teams within it work to incubate an array of technologies that will turn into the next generation of growth businesses for Microsoft. At the moment, this includes Microsoft’s telecoms and 5G capabilities, space-satellite technologies, quantum computing, and the work it does with the US federal government.

Within SMT, Nick works in the Growth Innovation and Strategy team under the division’s COO Mitra Azizirad focusing on product development for what he calls “horizon two” products and innovations (i.e. arriving in 2-3 years) along with the strategy, planning, and customer engagement effort in these areas.

“It may sound glamourous to some, but in reality across our teams, it’s tough work. There is no rule book or blueprint for growing future products and emerging categories. But is also is highly rewarding for all of the superb people working and collaborating across Microsoft in these areas.  “The fact that we are busy incubating the next generation of growth businesses that ultimately will determine the future of the cloud, our industry and the planet is very exciting,” he says.

Innovation at the core

Nick also points out that innovation is at the core of what everyone does in Microsoft but the work being done in SMT, although focused a bit farther out from the products of today, is growing in demand with customers especially in the current climate. “What we are seeing is that innovation is taking on an even greater importance today, perhaps more so now, than ever before because what many businesses learned during the pandemic is that innovation is core to driving both growth and resiliency in periods of high disruption.”

Why this is becoming even more important today than ever before he adds, is that we are about to witness several major technology paradigm shifts in the coming years that businesses need to start to think about and plan for today. These are not only going to shape the future of connectivity, AI and computing but they will also open up new doors of opportunity and innovation for enterprises and governments all over the world.

Three core paradigm shifts shaping the future cloud

What are these major shifts coming ahead of us? McQuire states that they include “Modern Connected Apps”, which brings the future of connectivity and technologies like 5G and space together with the cloud to put compute power into increasingly hard-to-reach areas and enable a new paradigm for connected applications in the process; “AI CoReasoning”, which, thanks to today’s advancements in generative AI through services like ChatGPT, will enable a new co-reasoning paradigm to develop between humans and machines that will transform how we interact with technology in the future; and third, “Quantum at Scale” which will enable a new computing paradigm with greater intelligence, precision, speed and scale applied to computationalbased problem solving and open up new fields of scientific discovery in the future.

“These three key areas of future innovation are not only collectively shaping the cloud’s future but Microsoft’s future as well, and is the core focus of our work in Strategic Missions and Technologies. Ultimately, we want to help our customers plan and gain a foothold in these emerging areas today so they are prepared to gain an advantage to improve their growth and resiliency when this innovation becomes standard in the future,” shares Nick.

“Learn it all” mindset

Like many of his teammates within SMT, the road to this point hasn’t been smooth and there have been several challenges they have all had to meet along the way. Because of his prior experience in technology incubation and in particular with startups in his career, he has become part of a high performing team that consistently has to embrace large-scale change and reinvention.

“We have all experienced setbacks but what I didn’t know at the time when facing some of my biggest challenges, was that they all served as huge blessings and catalysts for me move onto my next stage. These types of experiences are important in our organisation because we have to become comfortable with change. In fact, we have an acronym for it” states McQuire: “VUCA: volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. Being comfortable with VUCA is about staying positive in a rapidly changing world and approaching everything with a growth and ‘learn it all’ mindset”.

He adds: “Our leader Mitra Azizirad has a mantra which she often shares with the team: “Get energized by the word “No.” She argues that the word is “not a closed door – it’s an opportunity to learn, grow and come back stronger. Failure and success have a lot in common. You must embrace one to capture the other.” This really resonates with me as to how you can overcome obstacles working in innovation on one hand but also in your career as well.”

The Partnership between OpenAI and Microsoft

Nick and his team spend plenty of time working with customers on future innovations and he has seen incredible interest on the work Microsoft is doing with OpenAI over the past months in the area of generative AI which builds on decades of Microsoft research in the area.

When asked about the future of AI, Nick points out how it will progress in a couple of areas. First, how humans and users of the technology will increasingly “co-reason” with AI and how this will change the way we interact with technology to solve problems. With the development of various co-pilot solutions across Microsoft products since January, it is clear we really are entering a new era for AI and period of “intelligence working” which is a big change from the information and knowledge-based working model we see today. The second area of progress McQuire points out is at the intersection of large language and multi-modal models and science. “We are seeing foundation models evolving from understanding the language of humans to understanding the language of nature, particularly in molecular and computational chemistry. This has the potential to open up new areas of scientific discovery such as in the discovery of new sustainable materials, fertilizers or in drug discovery for example. Exciting times are ahead in this area,” shares Nick.

How Microsoft is helping customer overcome innovation challenges

At the same time however, Microsoft recognizes that many businesses have to overcome some immediate challenges in order to deploy and gain value from applying emerging technologies like 5G, Space, quantum computing and others. McQuire points out that building trust in the technology through responsible, secure and safe development and approaches to innovation are critical. Additionally, so is education and helping customers learn about these future cloud innovations so that businesses can understand where to start, how to prioritize and focus on the right use cases that drive the best business outcomes. “This is the foundation of the work we are doing as a team.” McQuire adds. “As exciting as these areas are, our work isn’t about technology for technology’s sake”. It’s fundamentally about humans. Humans make it all happen. And it’s also about co-innovation where we partner and help our customers gain a foothold in these future cloud technologies”.

Words of wisdom

To the budding young entrepreneurs, here’s what Nick has to say: “Every organization has the capacity to foster this type of innovation so it’s important to start to learn and plan around how these future cloud technologies can benefit your business and they are great launch pads to kick start innovation projects. We would love to partner and co-innovate with you on these areas and have many tools and learnings from within Microsoft to help you get started with these technologies, whether 5G, space or quantum computing, so do reach out if interested.

In another set of events, the Jaguar Formula E Racing Team is also exploring the Digital Twin technology to explore the limits of the E race cars. Wondering what’s the connection between the two?

Well to start with, it is about the heart- a human heart and a machine’s heart i.e. the engine. The other similarity? Both fuel the owner’s performance – a healthy human heart is key to an athlete’s performance and an engine determines the car’s performance. Yet another similarity is the advanced use of technology which will enable Des and the Jaguar team to simulate their heart and engine in a virtual environment and understand what goes under the hood. How they perform under pressure, how much they can endure, and what would be the best way to enhance their limits and hence performance.

Science fiction?

No.

Technology?

Yes.

A digital twin is a virtual representation of a real-world physical entity, such as a product, system, or process (a physical twin) or even human organs (bio-digital twin) that can act as its identical digital partner for various uses, such as simulating, integrating, testing, monitoring, and maintaining it. So basically, it is your heart outside your body, mimicking every activity. The technology has the potential to disrupt multiple sectors and has already started to do so. In Des’s case, the technology will enable healthcare providers to see, measure, and monitor a heart – and simulate responses under varying degrees of stress – without invasive procedures. This has the potential to lead to better patient experiences and better health outcomes. In Formula E races, it can lead to better design, higher speeds, better fuel utilization, and more.

That brings us to the final common factor between Des and Jaguar Racing team which is Tata Consultancy Services.

Des joined the Living Heart Project, a partnership project between Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Dassault Systèmes to build a sophisticated Digital Heart for a top athlete, showing the huge possibilities of digital twins for enhancing performance and well-being, transforming and enriching lives.

On the other hand, for over a decade, TCS has been using advanced digital technology to help Jaguar Land Rover switch to electric vehicles. Currently, TCS uses cloud and digital twin technology to enable fast data access, allowing the Jaguar TCS Racing team to test the race car’s potential in a simulated environment and improve its performance in the real world.

So how has the tech-giant managed to retain its mantle of being a disruptor over the years? Let’s explore!

The Technology Giant Disrupting the World Since 1968

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the Indian multinational information technology (IT) services and consulting company headquartered in Mumbai, was founded in 1968. It is the second-largest Indian company by market capitalization and the most valuable IT service brand worldwide. TCS offers a wide range of IT services, outsourcing, and business solutions to its clients.

With a presence in 55+ countries and a team of 600,000 strong, TCS has the unique advantage of having contextual knowledge about a variety of customer pain points and how to tackle them. Being part of the Tata Group, India’s biggest conglomerate, gives them a sweet advantage in building and delivering quick solutions for their customers. As Sumanta Roy, Head of Middle East and Africa, puts it — they are not just tech consultants; they are here to guide clients through their end-to-end digital journey.

Beyond Just IT Services

At the core, TCS is a technology company providing IT & business solutions to its customers. But they are not your average tech company! “We are all about tech solutions, sure, but we take it a step further. We strongly believe in customer centricity and go beyond transforming businesses through technology. We believe in bringing about a real difference in all aspects of our partners’ businesses – be it the transformation, their end customers, or the communities they serve,” says Sumanta.

With all the new disruptions in the tech world, businesses are confused about which strategy to adopt, and what will work best for them, their employees, and their customers. Often, looking at digital transformation as a siloed approach has long-term implications, and businesses lose out on real benefits. Digital transformation is not merely an item with CIOs or CTOs anymore in an organization. In any function or department, there is a need for tech enablement and thinking through the lens of digital-first.

TCS enables its customers to adopt this approach and ensures they are with them throughout the end journey, not just digital transformation or implementation, but also even further in adapting to newer changes, planning for the future, etc. Like the digital twin technology. According to TCS’s 2023 Digital Twindex report, the futurists and industry experts believe digital twins will make their way into every government, business, home, and human by 2035.

A Long-term Association

Sumanta has been with TCS for over three decades now. Following graduation, he ventured into entrepreneurship for a year before pursuing an MBA. He landed a spot at TCS through campus placement, and that’s how the journey started.

Sumanta started his TCS gig with a software product testing project, and then transitioned swiftly into sales, focusing on Indian SMEs and expanding to neighboring countries. His responsibilities included establishing channels in Nepal and Sri Lanka at that time.

During the Y2K era, he assumed the role of a product manager, overseeing new product development, branding, and manufacturing. Subsequently, Sumanta relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio, as the Regional Head for Ohio and Kentucky. Over three years, he managed relationships with five large Fortune 500 companies. “Those were exhilarating times, and I guided my customers about the gains and pitfalls of the outsourcing journey and learned a lot at the same time,” he says.

Returning to Mumbai, he shifted to the “buy side” of the TCS business. He was the head of all IT procurement of the company and managed a large budget. It was during this time that TCS went public. “And that experience was something else! It was the largest IPO in the Indian stock market, and I was actually in the thick of the process. At this time, TCS sold the shares of some of its JVs, bought back others, and consolidated its BPO business,” recalls Sumanta.

After a while, Sumanta decided to return to the “sell side”. He focused on BPO/BPS opportunities for the East Coast, based in New Jersey. Post that he assumed responsibility for the Utilities business for TCS India before becoming accountable for all sales in the country.

In 2019, Sumanta moved to Dubai and now he oversees TCS’ interests in the Middle East and Africa market, juggling the interests, and managing operations across nine countries. Quite the journey, it has been – one that he looks back on quite fondly!

A Flexible Leader

As a leader, when it comes to his working style, Sumanta keeps a flexible approach. There are three things he is particular about:

  • First and foremost, customer satisfaction, which by default, is what they achieve to build in their business every day.
  • Second, is financial management, which includes revenues, sales, budget management, etc.
  • And finally, the growth of his core team. He strives to ensure that his team gets the best opportunities to flourish along with him.

For all the rest, Sumanta practices a style of “coaching leadership”. He is an avid listener and always maintains an open-door policy. This helps him stay abreast of information, leading to opportunities as well as headwinds. Further, he is trying to increase his “say-do” ratio and is still working on this.

When it comes to his communication style, Sumanta believes in storytelling and a lot of his associates agree with that. “Stories are powerful tools that make deeper and more resilient impacts. There are, of course, situations when I have to take tough calls and provide explicit commands, especially during challenging times. I believe in having a set of close confidantes, who I know will speak their minds no matter what. I may not always agree with them, but I never trivialize their suggestions. For the rest of the larger team, I do retain an element of distance,” he shares.

Speaking about Challenges

The biggest challenge, Sumanta shares, undoubtedly has been the Covid years, as it was a completely unchartered territory for everyone. Every country, every customer, every ecosystem and supply chain partner, and every colleague had their own set of unique challenges and unique experiences. “There was no cookie-cutter approach. And yet, when there are so many variables, there is a simple guiding principle: fall back on the fundamentals. We leaned on the company’s mission and vision to navigate the complexities, and it brought clarity to our thoughts.

And you know what stood out during these difficult times? The power of empathy! Amidst all the chaos and darkness, empathy became our guiding light, always pointing us in the right direction,” says Sumanta.

Before COVID-19, there was another time when Sumanta found himself at a crossroads, faced with the unique intricacies of conducting business in a new country. The storyteller in Sumanta takes over as he shares the story with us, set against the backdrop of a challenging African market.

“Considering the unique business landscape and practices in that country, I made the tough decision to exit the country and not renew certain longstanding contracts. In the face of this strategic choice, the immediate consequence was unmistakable — a hit to our revenue. However, this choice was driven by a broader vision – preserving our brand value,” narrates Sumanta.

“This was a well-calculated gamble,” he continues. “By strategically withdrawing from the market, we prioritized the enduring value of our brand over immediate financial gains. In the grand scheme of things, safeguarding our brand integrity proved to be a more substantial asset.”

Formulating Growth for the Region

TCS has been actively present in the Middle East & Africa for over 25 years with over 150+ clients across different domains and industries. The focus of TCS in this region has always been on three aspects: Customer Centricity, Diversity & Inclusion, and Business growth & transformation.

They have grown more than 50% in terms of the employee base in this region over the past three years, providing much-required core technical support and contextualized experts for the customers. To build a formidable ecosystem for their customers, they have strengthened their partnerships with enterprise units, startup communities, and the government. This has resulted in a more than 25% increase in their customer base across verticals like Banking, Insurance, Retail, Hospitality, Travel, CPG, Manufacturing, Utilities, Public Sector, etc.

“Innovation starts at the grassroots level, and it is quite important to build the seed of innovation in the future generation. To enable this, we have partnered with several universities across the region and signed MoUs to foster an exchange of knowledge, training, and talent acquisition. Mohammed Bin Rashid School of Government, KAUST Saudi Arabia, and UAE University are a few of those names,” shares Sumanta.

TCS Sustainathon is another program that TCS launched to enable students to solve real-life sustainability issues in their own community using technology. This was launched in South Africa two years back, and now they are all set to launch it in Saudi Arabia next year.

TCS Innovation Lab in Riyadh was set up to enhance the speed of innovation and POC with their customers. This is run with the approach of failing fast, learning fast, and providing quicker solutions to customer pain points. They have also set up multiple Agile Innovation Centres at the customer premises, training and enabling them to innovate in their own environment.

TCS All Women Digital Services Centre was set up in Riyadh in 2013 when bringing women to the forefront of the workforce was not the norm in the region. Currently, the center employs almost 1000 Saudi women, who are highly technically trained and are one of the strong pillars of the large employee base in this region.

Even their partnership in sports initiatives is a strong statement of how they value sustainability and achieving goals that create a long-term impact. TCS is the title sponsor of all the major marathons in the world, including New York, London, Amsterdam, Chicago, etc. Their partnership with Jaguar for Formula E leverages data to predict race outcomes and optimize performance sustainably.

TCS believes the power of sport and technology are collectively driving the future of mobility and sustainability through Formula E.

“The opportunities in the future are immense, for us, and any organizations. But it is the core value and purpose in any organization that enables it to make conscious choices building a sustainable future for all,” concludes Sumanta.

Leader’s View

CIO: As a leader, it is extremely crucial that one is decisive and rational. What do you do when you are stuck or confused?

Sumanta: Being decisive is crucial, and so is being rational, though maybe a bit less in my book. Sometimes, a touch of irrationality can bring about some dramatic changes. When I hit a roadblock, I have got three moves:

  • Tackle a routine task to find my rhythm.
  • Have a chat with a confidante – talking it out tends to clear the confusion, and
  • Remind myself it’s okay not to have all the right answers and just make any call. Life’s a journey, not a quest for constant perfection, right?

CIO: As a business leader, do you believe in micromanaging every aspect of the business or do you believe in efficient management?

Sumanta: I tend to delve into micromanaging certain aspects, specifically those tasks or issues that have a direct impact on my superior’s KRAs. For the rest, my approach is all about efficient management. It is all about the belief! I trust my team implicitly and am confident that they are more than capable of handling the micromanagement needed for tasks that directly influence my KRA. It’s a collaborative effort where everyone plays to their strengths, ensuring a well-balanced and smoothly operating team.

Lena Lundgreen: A Journey of Digital Empowerment and Societal Transformation

Microsoft’s Public Sector division is dedicated to empowering government agencies with innovative technology solutions that address some of society’s most significant challenges. Through its Center of Expertise, Microsoft provides thought leadership, research, and best practices to enable digital transformation and innovation within the public sector. The division’s focus is on delivering inclusive programs, transforming operations, and enabling communities to thrive on a foundation of security, privacy, and trust.

The company’s approach includes enhancing public interactions with the government by making them more accessible and inclusive, improving employee engagement and workflows, and securing government data to protect resources. Microsoft for Government aims to provide solutions that drive financial accountability, support public health and social services, and empower public safety and justice. By leveraging cloud technologies, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity, Microsoft is at the forefront of helping public sector organizations become more resilient, efficient, and responsive to the needs of citizens.

As the Government Industry Director at Microsoft, Lena Lundgreen leverages her deep insight into digitalization and cloud technology and works to make it possible to offer better services to residents through the use of technology. Lena has previously been the Country Manager at Avanade and held other operational positions in the consulting industry. She has also worked for many years as a lawyer and specializes in privacy.

From Legal to Public Sector

From a young age, Lena aspired to pursue a career in law. Her professional journey began at a larger Norwegian law firm, where she specialized in IT law. Over time, her interests gravitated toward the business aspects of the field, leading her to assume various business roles within consulting firms. Eventually, she became the General Manager at Avanade Norway.

Joining Microsoft marked a central mid-career transition for Lena. She was driven by a conviction that significant advancements were necessary for the Public Sector to improve services to nations. She believed that Microsoft presented the ideal platform to make a meaningful contribution towards these improvements.

Transitioning from the consulting industry to Microsoft represented a significant challenge to her leadership approach. The consulting business has quite a straightforward business model, based on people, hours, and price. A considerable portion of Lena’s success was attributed to accurately managing these variables. However, at Microsoft, the complexity is exponentially greater, with a myriad of products, an intricate organizational matrix, multiple sales channels, and much more. This made it necessary to fundamentally transform her leadership approach.

To effectively navigate such a dynamic and multifaceted environment, Lena Lundgreen had to cultivate a new set of skills and tools. She started on an accelerated learning curve, seeking guidance from mentors and engaging with peers.

“This journey has been very rewarding, and I now find it deeply satisfying to lead within an organization that offers a large number of mechanisms to influence and drive success for our customers in the Public Sector,” she says.

Guiding Principles

For Lena Lundgreen, there are a couple of things that are important in her leadership approach. She is a firm believer in the power of a psychologically safe environment to increase the individual and collective productivity. “It is often said that we are capable of achieving more than we realize, and I see psychological safety as the catalyst for unlocking this huge potential. This principle applies universally, be it in the workplace, sports, or any other activity. I consciously dedicate time and effort to cultivate such a safe environment, focusing on what we choose to highlight, celebrate, and the personal experiences we share, all of which serve to empower our teams,” she explains.

Second, she strives to understand the motivations behind people’s actions. Lena operates under the assumption that most individuals are rational and do their utmost within their roles. Rather than jumping to conclusions, she seeks to understand the underlying reasons for their behaviors. Often, actions that initially appear suboptimal have well-intentioned reasons behind them. Therefore, she asks about the ‘why’ to gain deeper insights. In her experience working with a diverse, global team, she has learned that while her typical Nordic direct approach to questioning may surprise some nationalities, it is also appreciated for the clarity it brings.

Impactful Initiatives

Lena Lundgreen has had the privilege of leading the public sector team in Microsoft Norway during a transformative period that was marked by the announcement, development, and building of a data center in the country. The partnership they managed to establish with public sector entities, their success in articulating the business value of the cloud, and the willingness of some entities to embrace this journey with them, feels like her biggest impact so far.

“This initiative has been instrumental in Norway, where numerous public entities are progressive, and focused on harnessing the full potential of technology to deliver cost-effective and superior services for the country,” she shares.

In 2023, Lena Lundgreen led a newly formed team of industry experts, where each member brought a diverse background and range of experiences to the table. They collectively saw that rapid adaptation and quick understanding of their new responsibilities were essential for their success. “I am proud of our accomplishments; we not only constructed a platform for change but also actively executed it in a situation with a lot of uncertainty,” she says.

She explains that in such times of transformation, it is crucial to concentrate on the elements within one’s control. They identified guiding principles, such as customer centricity, which served as their ‘north star’ and created measurable objectives. Despite a variety of unresolved questions, they persistently pursued these principles and objectives. “I am continually impressed with my team’s dedication and the significant impact that our efforts have on enhancing our customer relationships and delivery of outcomes,” adds Lena.

A Positive Work Environment for Collective Success

As mentioned before, for Lena Lundgreen it all starts with a safe work environment. It is essential to create a space where team members feel comfortable taking informed risks. This freedom, in her experience, stimulates creativity and innovative thinking. She emphasizes to her team that every challenge should be viewed as a valuable opportunity to grow. It’s through these challenges that one stretches one’s capabilities and discovers new potential.

She is committed to assigning tasks that encourage her team members to push the boundaries of conventional thinking and explore new exciting possibilities. By doing so, they not only drive innovation within the project but also contribute to the personal and professional growth of every individual in the team.

As a leader, Lena’s approach is rooted in transparency and collaboration, which are fundamental to fostering a collaborative culture. Leadership greatly influences the workplace environment – their actions set an example for others to follow. By openly sharing and involving her team in processes, Lena encourages them to do the same.

Diversity is another cornerstone of Lena’s leadership. Since taking on a role in EMEA, she has witnessed firsthand the power of diversity. While gender diversity is significant, especially for her as a woman in the tech industry, diversity encompasses much more, including cultural backgrounds, mindsets, and approaches. Embracing this broad spectrum of diversity is key to the collective success.

Making Time for Personal Growth

While it is challenging to focus on personal growth during a hectic work life, Lena makes it a priority. She dedicates time to self-improvement because she owes it to her team and herself.

One powerful tool she uses is seeking feedback. “The higher you climb in an organization, the less feedback you tend to receive. So, it is important to actively seek it out. If you have created a safe work environment, you will receive direct and honest feedback,” she clarifies.

She also feels fortunate to work in a company filled with inspiring leaders. She observes their actions closely and adopts the best practices from each of them to help enhance her leadership style.

Making Tough Calls

As a leader, one is often faced with difficult choices. The toughest part for most leaders, Lena finds, is knowing when to stop certain actions, like ending a project or discontinuing a product. It’s vital to do this to maintain focus on what’s truly important. Many leaders struggle here – they keep adding new tasks without stopping old ones, which doesn’t leave room for the new work.

“I always aim to balance what I add by removing an equal amount, where possible. When invariably facing tough decisions, I try to get input from others when I can. This goes back to my days as a lawyer, where we would always consult a colleague on tough cases. Asking for advice is not about insecurity; it’s about tapping into the collective intelligence and diverse perspectives within your organization to help your decision-making,” she shares.

The Future of Leadership

While forecasting the future is always a challenge, Lena suggests that it’s clear that the pace of business is unlikely to slow down. Change will continue to occur rapidly, perhaps even more swiftly than it does today. She also believes that technology, especially cloud and AI, will play an even more significant role, enabling businesses to utilize their data more effectively. This leads her to anticipate a future that is increasingly driven by data.

Lena Lundgreen opines that one of the major challenges leaders will face is finding the right balance between maintaining necessary stability and being agile enough to implement rapid changes. On top of that, there will be a stronger emphasis on having a clear purpose, coupled with a deep commitment to ethical and responsible business practices.

“Above all, the key for me is undertaking continuous learning. To keep evolving, I plan to surround myself with a diverse group of people who can challenge me and provide honest feedback. This will help me stay adaptable and informed in an ever-changing business landscape,” concludes Lena Lundgreen.

Key Leadership Skills

We asked Lena about what are the key qualities or skills that every dynamic leader should possess. This is what she has to say:

“3 key things come to my mind. I would say that transparency is vital. It provides the team with a clear understanding of our goals and the methods we’re using to achieve them. Especially when circumstances change, this clarity forms a solid foundation for making informed decisions.

Having empathy is also crucial. It leads to clearer communication and enhances our problem-solving capabilities. Lastly, it’s important to appreciate the journey, not just the results. Valuing the process helps us adapt quickly to changes in our environment, making us more agile, responsive, and effective as leaders.

Message for Aspiring Leaders

“I’d suggest building a leadership platform for yourself. This platform should include a vision for your future direction. Document your strengths and identify the skills or experiences you need to acquire to reach your goals. Also, devise a plan to obtain those skills. However, it’s important not to become so fixated on your plan that you miss out on unexpected opportunities that may arise.

It’s also vital to treat everyone with respect. Doing so usually leads to mutual respect, which significantly increases the chances of accomplishing your objectives.”

Michael Dunn: Pioneering the Digital Future of Legal Systems

“At any given moment, do the right thing.” Professor Hamilton Beazley.

This guiding principle is not just a personal motto for Michael Dunn; it defines his entire approach to leadership and innovation. As the Founder and CEO of Pono Pono’i Consulting LLC, Michael has spent over four decades applying this simple but profound philosophy across a range of roles in the legal and judicial sectors. His ability to “do the right thing” has not only led him to embrace cutting-edge technologies but also to drive ethical, meaningful change in some of the world’s most critical institutions. His leadership is characterized by a persistent commitment to improving access to justice, modernizing judicial systems, and building a fairer, more efficient legal ecosystem through innovation.

Michael’s career is not a tale of mere professional success; it is a narrative of purposeful leadership, one that prioritizes doing what is right for the betterment of society. With his unique combination of legal expertise, business acumen, and technological foresight, Michael has become a transformative figure in the legal world. His journey is one of constant evolution, adaptation, and vision, leading him from the local courtrooms of Cincinnati to global leadership roles at LexisNexis, BearingPoint, Microsoft, and eventually, his own firm.

The Foundations of a Visionary Leader

Michael’s early career in Cincinnati, Ohio, offers valuable insights into the origins of his dedication to the judicial system. Growing up in a city known for its legal history, Michael began his professional journey working as a courthouse runner and paralegal during high school and college. This was more than a job for Michael—it was an introduction to the inner workings of the justice system, an eye-opening experience that exposed him to the real-world challenges and inefficiencies that courts face every day.

From these early years, Michael recognized that the administration of justice is a complex and evolving landscape. As he learned the ropes of court operations, he began to understand that every inefficiency—whether in process, communication, or decision-making—represented not only a loss of time but also a loss of fairness and access to justice. These formative experiences planted the seeds of his desire to bring about systemic improvements in the judicial system.

Equipped with this sense of purpose, Michael pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Cincinnati. His academic background in economics provided him with a unique perspective on the judicial system—one that combined legal knowledge with an understanding of the broader economic forces at play. Courts, after all, do not operate in isolation; they are embedded in a larger socio-economic framework, and inefficiencies in the legal system can have ripple effects across entire communities.

Not content to stop there, Michael continued to expand his skillset by earning an MBA from The George Washington University. This advanced education gave him the business acumen and strategic management skills necessary to navigate the complexities of large organizations, manage teams, and execute large-scale projects. His MBA also equipped him with the tools to think critically about leadership—skills he would go on to apply in his roles at major organizations like LexisNexis, BearingPoint, and Microsoft. To further enhance his expertise, Michael undertook additional studies at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University, where he focused on competitive marketing strategy and international law, respectively. These experiences broadened his worldview and provided him with the strategic foresight to tackle challenges on a global scale.

Innovating at LexisNexis: Laying the Groundwork

Michael’s career truly began to take shape when he joined LexisNexis, a leading provider of legal research and information services. His role at LexisNexis was a natural extension of his early exposure to the judicial system, but it also marked the beginning of his journey into legal innovation. At LexisNexis, Michael was responsible for managing territories across the Midwest, including Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Michigan, and Indiana. This role required him to engage directly with courts and government agencies, understanding their needs and challenges while providing tailored solutions that improved their operations.

It wasn’t long before Michael began making his mark by driving innovation within LexisNexis. His ability to identify inefficiencies within the legal system led him to develop groundbreaking applications such as Sidebar and the Legislative History Tool. These tools were specifically designed to address the needs of judges, judicial law clerks, and legal professionals who were bogged down by outdated processes. By streamlining legal research, citation checking, and case management, these innovations significantly improved the speed and accuracy of judicial decision-making.

The success of these tools earned Michael recognition from the U.S. Supreme Court Historical Society—a testament to the impact he had made on the legal community. But more importantly, these innovations laid the groundwork for what would become a lifelong commitment to modernizing judicial processes. Michael understood that technology was not just an optional enhancement for courts; it was an essential component of a fair and efficient justice system.

Revolutionizing Statewide Systems at BearingPoint Consulting

Michael’s next step was to join BearingPoint Consulting, where he had the opportunity to apply his expertise on a larger, more strategic scale. At BearingPoint, Michael shifted his focus from individual courts to entire state-wide systems, taking on projects that would redefine how legal processes were handled across multiple jurisdictions. One of his most significant achievements during this time was his leadership in developing statewide e-filing systems—an initiative that would transform how courts processed legal documents and managed cases.

The Texas Online initiative, one of Michael’s flagship projects at BearingPoint, was a game-changer. By integrating e-filing service providers into a unified platform, this project drastically reduced the inefficiencies that had previously plagued the legal system. Courts were able to process cases more quickly, legal professionals had better access to information, and the public benefited from improved access to justice. This initiative demonstrated Michael’s ability to think strategically about the future of legal systems and to implement solutions that addressed both current needs and future challenges.

The success of the Texas Online initiative was not just about technology—it was about creating a system that was scalable, adaptable, and sustainable. Michael recognized that the key to long-term success in judicial modernization lay in building solutions that could evolve alongside the needs of the legal community. His work at BearingPoint solidified his reputation as a forward-thinking leader with a deep understanding of the intersection between law, technology, and policy.

Innovating the Future at Microsoft: Bringing Courts into the Cloud

Michael’s career took another significant leap forward when he joined Microsoft, where he assumed a leadership role in the company’s Justice and Public Safety division. At Microsoft, Michael had the opportunity to combine his legal expertise with cutting-edge technology to drive transformative change in the judicial system. His work at Microsoft was characterized by a bold vision for the future of courts—a future where cloud-based solutions, machine learning, and AI would become integral components of the justice system.

One of Michael’s most notable achievements at Microsoft was his leadership in implementing the first cloud-based offender management system for a state. This was a pivotal moment in the evolution of judicial systems, as it demonstrated the potential of cloud computing to improve the efficiency, security, and accessibility of legal processes. Under Michael’s guidance, Microsoft showed that cloud technology wasn’t just for large, well-funded courts—it was a scalable, affordable solution that could be adopted by courts of all sizes.

Gladyse Taylor, Assistant Director of the Illinois Department of Corrections, reflected on Michael’s contributions to the modernization of the DOC:
“Michael’s leadership was pivotal in revolutionizing DOC operations. The pen packet initiative marked a critical step, but his vision extended far beyond. Integrating iDOC provided essential data for informed offender management decisions. By leveraging machine learning, we optimized cell placements, reduced violence, and aligned rehabilitative programming, contributing to lower recidivism rates. His work has undeniably advanced corrections infrastructure and public safety.”

Michael’s ability to integrate machine learning into the judicial system was another key innovation during his time at Microsoft. By applying AI-driven analytics to offender management, courts were able to make more informed decisions about inmate placement, rehabilitation programs, and violence prevention strategies. This approach not only improved the efficiency of the judicial system but also had a direct impact on public safety and recidivism rates.

I had the pleasure of working with Michael when he led global Justice and Public Safety programs at Microsoft. Michael’s ability to foster collaboration across teams and organizations to drive meaningful solutions is unparalleled. His deep subject matter expertise and passion for advancing justice systems around the world inspire everyone around him. Those who are fortunate enough to work with him are always eager to do so again.

Pono Pono’i Consulting: A New Chapter of Impact

In 2016, Michael took on a project that would bring his vision full circle—helping Lake Charles City Court fully transition to the cloud. This project was significant not only because it demonstrated the power of cloud-based solutions but also because it proved that even the smallest courts could adopt secure, scalable technology at an affordable cost.

Tim Leger, Court Administrator of Lake Charles City Court, emphasized the importance of Michael’s guidance:
“Under Michael’s guidance, our court fully transitioned to the cloud, proving that even the smallest courts can adopt affordable, secure cloud solutions. His vision demonstrated that cloud adoption enhances safety and efficiency, positioning our court for long-term success in a data-driven world.”

Shannon Shirk: Reforming Healthcare Technology with Vision and Innovation

Effective leadership in the complex landscape of healthcare technology requires more than just an understanding of emerging trends or the latest tools. It demands a balance between driving innovation and staying rooted in the fundamental mission of patient-centric care.

Leaders must be agile, able to navigate rapid technological advances while keeping the well-being of patients at the heart of every decision. In this context, leadership becomes an art—a delicate blend of strategic foresight, empathy, and operational excellence. As the healthcare industry faces transformative shifts, it is the leaders who can harmonize these elements that will redefine the future of patient care.

Shannon Shirk, former Chief Information Officer at Health Connect America and Global Head/GM of IQVIA’s Integrated Health Practice, exemplifies this nuanced leadership. With a career spanning high-tech product engineering to healthcare technology, Shannon has cultivated a perspective that prioritizes both technological advancement and patient experience. His journey is a testament to how a blend of global experience, consumer-first focus, and people-centric leadership can drive meaningful innovation in healthcare.

A Journey Defined by Perspective

Shannon’s career began in the high-tech world, where he led product engineering and testing teams for global companies. His early roles gave him deep insights into managing technology solutions and global teams that cater to diverse audiences across different cultural contexts. This experience laid the foundation for his unique approach as a CIO—an approach that centers on understanding the varied needs of users and the business, and tailoring solutions accordingly.

“Technology may be used to solve the same or similar problems in various scenarios, but depending on the audience and culture, you might need to approach the implementation or solution in a very different way to meet the needs of the consumers or business,” Shannon explains. This consumer-first/patient-first philosophy, where the focus remains on people rather than technology, guides his leadership philosophy.

“To me, this is the path to success—keeping the end-users’ needs and outcomes in focus.”

As he transitioned into healthcare, Shannon quickly recognized the industry’s lag in adopting technology. “The joke in healthcare technology is that it’s ten years behind high-tech or fintech,” he remarks, humorously highlighting the industry’s notorious resistance to change. Despite this, Shannon has remained steadfast in his mission to modernize healthcare systems, focusing on the untapped potential that lies in adopting modern, secure, flexible, and scalable systems and methods.

Patient Engagement: A Missed Opportunity in Healthcare

In the intricate amalgamation between technology and healthcare, patient engagement often becomes an overlooked aspect. Shannon, however, sees this as a critical area where technology can make a profound impact—if only the industry were willing to embrace change.

Shannon’s consumer-first approach, deeply influenced by his global experience in high-tech engineering, biopharma, and healthcare, emphasizes that the ultimate success of any healthcare technology lies in its ability to engage patients meaningfully and reduce the burden on providers and clinicians.

“Many established practices are holding on to technology that’s well beyond its shelf life,” Shannon explains. He observes that healthcare, particularly in the United States, often clings to outdated systems—like fax machines and obsolete versions of Windows—simply because they have been ‘working’ for decades. This reluctance to upgrade, he argues, is more than just a technological lag; it’s a missed opportunity to enhance patient engagement and trust. It is also a huge risk area for security and compliance that must be immediately addressed and mitigated.

Shannon’s perspective is clear: by adopting modern and flexible sytems and technologies, healthcare providers could make it significantly easier for patients to interact with their clinicians and to increase clinician satisfaction and work-life balance. “We are losing too many providers due to the complexities of documenting their job, their ability to effectively communicate and interact with patients, and ultimately their ability to help make the patient’s health and lives better, with better and predictable outcomes. When systems and practices fail to upgrade, they miss the chance to digitize and simplify patient interactions, make charting easier for clinicians, streamline and simplify the billing and revenue processes, and create proactive, trust-building communication with patients.” This, he believes, is where healthcare is losing ground—not only with patients but also with the clinicians/providers, administration, and operators.

The benefits of a modernized, patient-centric approach extend beyond just convenience. For Shannon, it’s about fostering a relationship between the patient and provider that is built on ease of access, clear communication, and mutual trust. He points out that with better technology, patients can be more proactive in their healthcare journeys, leading to improved outcomes and experiences. “Engaging patients early and making it easier for them to navigate their care is essential to improving their overall health experiences,” he asserts.

In his former roles, Shannon made it a priority to push for these changes, always with the end-user—the client or patient—at the forefront of his decisions. By advocating for technology that puts the patient first, Shannon is not just implementing systems; he is transforming how patients experience healthcare. His approach highlights the critical intersection between technology and patient care, where the true potential of healthcare technology can be realized.

Aiding Underserved Communities

One of the most significant challenges in healthcare technology lies in providing care for underserved communities. Shannon’s perspective on this issue is clear: innovation must begin with addressing basic needs.

“When working in underserved communities, you have to really start with the basics. “Does the person have a place to sleep? Do they have electricity? Are there food insecurities? Once those basic needs are met, you can ask if they even have internet access and devices to use the provided technology?” he adds. “Do the clinicians in those areas have the tools they need to effectively provide care for their patients?”

Shannon recounts his experience as CIO at a mental and behavioral health practice, where the technology team worked with the EHR vendor Qualifacts to develop an offline solution and equip clinicians with iPads that could run offline applications. This approach allowed clinicians to perform their work even in areas with limited or no internet connectivity, thereby reducing administrative burdens and improving service delivery.

“Previous to this solution, clinicians were paper charting and had to update electronic charts after they returned home or to the office—significantly increasing their working hours and risk of burnout,” he explained. “Having a partner that aligns with your values and is committed to meeting your business needs is very important. It’s not just about the feature and functionality of the products. You have to work together towards a common goal and vision.”

This emphasis on meeting communities where they are, rather than imposing one-size-fits-all solutions, is central to Shannon’s approach. It’s a philosophy that blends pragmatism with compassion, ensuring that technological advancements genuinely improve the lives of those most in need.

The Pandemic’s Impact on Mental and Behavioral Health Services

The COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to the mental and behavioral health sectors, forcing a rapid transition from in-person to remote services. For Shannon, this shift exposed the stark disparities in access to healthcare, particularly in rural and underserved areas. “Mental health practices were 99% in-person prior to the pandemic. Healthcare, in general, had to transition to a remote-based practice very quickly,” Shannon said.

In many areas, this transition was far from smooth. Shannon shares a poignant example from his rural county in Tennessee, where half of the families lack internet or cell service at their homes. “Instead of being able to switch to remote learning as many school systems did during the pandemic, our local school district had to simply cancel school for the rest of the year because they couldn’t provide remote services and access to all students.” The repercussions of this digital divide are still being felt, particularly among elementary school children who missed out on critical learning and social development.

Shannon’s account serves as a reminder of how critical infrastructure, or the lack thereof, can deepen existing disparities. His work continues to focus on bridging these gaps, using technology as a tool to expand access and improve outcomes.

The Backbone of Patient-Centric Care

For Shannon, data is the lifeblood of effective healthcare. “Data-driven decisions are a motto I live by,” he asserts. In his role as CIO, Shannon has implemented a cloud-first strategy to ensure seamless integration and data accessibility across systems. Realizing that many healthcare organizations often do not have the budget or time to stand up dedicated data science and dedicated data analytics teams, Shannon partnered early with DOMO, a data analytics and data warehouse as a service platform—connecting all the various data sources in a simple and non-coding way—any data source: finance data, EMR data, compliance data, HR data, spreadsheets, emails, etc. In Shannon’s experience, DOMO has proven transformative, enabling non-programmers to create dashboards and reports while expanding the organization’s vision of what can be achieved through data.

“DOMO not only allows you to surface the data that business and clinicians thought they needed, but it also helped expand their vision of what they could do with the data.” Shannon’s emphasis on data analytics is twofold: it must support clinicians in delivering better patient care and outcomes and also provide the business with actionable insights for decision-making and compliance.

This holistic approach to data management underscores Shannon’s commitment to ensuring that technology serves both operational efficiency and patient well-being. It’s a strategy that not only improves care, but also positions people at the forefront of data-driven healthcare.

Preparing for the Future

Looking ahead, Shannon identifies several trends that will define the next five years in healthcare technology. Of course, security, privacy, and compliance are top and critical priorities. Next, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML) are at the forefront of these developments.

“Continuing to ease the providers’ and clinicians’ documentation burdens is key. NLP/AI/ML will be critical in helping with both getting the information into the EHR and getting the relevant and important information out of the EHR that is not in a typical structured data element.”

Shannon also underlines the growing importance of AI and ML in improving data security. “Using AI/ML to improve the security side of things—automating detection and responses (SOAR), discovering trends, and identifying potential weak or risk areas—is critical.”

To prepare for these changes, Shannon advocates for a culture of continuous learning, solution flexibility, and proactive scenario planning. “Security, privacy, and compliance are not a one-time exercise to document. They must be a living document and plan, with continual tabletop reviews and actual exercises to be effective.” His forward-thinking approach ensures that the business remains adaptable and ready to meet new challenges as they arise.

Continuing to Be A Human-Centric CIO

Shannon’s leadership is guided by a set of core principles, including the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” He also draws inspiration from Warren Buffet’s famous quote on hiring: “In looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: Integrity, intelligence, and energy. And if they don’t have the first, the other two will kill you.”

These values reflect Shannon’s commitment to ethical leadership, where trust and integrity are non-negotiable. In a field as critical as healthcare, where lives are directly impacted by leadership decisions, these principles are more than just words—they are the foundation on which successful, sustainable organizations are built.

Shannon Shirk’s journey from high-tech engineering to healthcare technology is a story of adaptability, learning, and an unwavering focus on people. In an industry often mired in legacy systems and resistant to change, Shannon’s consumer-first approach, combined with his strategic foresight, has positioned him as a transformative leader.

Shannon continues to bridge the gap between technological innovation and patient-centric care. His emphasis on data-driven decisions, continuous education, and ethical leadership offers a blueprint for other leaders navigating the complex intersection of healthcare and technology.

In a world where healthcare challenges are increasingly global and interconnected, Shannon’s philosophy serves as a reminder that the ultimate goal of technology is to enhance human experience. By keeping people at the center of every decision, he is not just advancing healthcare technology—he is redefining what it means to lead with vision, compassion, and purpose.
