Walmart is expanding its drone delivery operations to two more major U.S. markets as demand for faster and more convenient shopping options continues to grow. The retail giant and Alphabet-owned Wing plan to launch drone delivery services in the Seattle and Denver metropolitan areas next year.
The expansion is part of the companies’ broader strategy to make drone deliveries available from more than 270 Walmart stores across the United States. Once the latest markets are added, the service will reach nearly 20 major U.S. metropolitan areas.
Wing announced the expansion Monday, highlighting the growing adoption of drone delivery among American consumers. The company said the move will help more families receive everyday products quickly without having to make a trip to a store.
Service Already Reaches Millions
Wing Chief Business Officer Heather Rivera said the addition of new metropolitan areas reflects how quickly consumers across the country are embracing drone delivery.
The Walmart partnership currently provides access to more than 3 million customers in several major markets. Existing service areas include Dallas-Fort Worth, Atlanta, Houston and Orlando, where customers can order eligible products from participating Walmart stores and have them delivered by drone.
The companies expect the continued expansion to make the technology available to a larger portion of Walmart’s customer base while giving shoppers another option for receiving everyday essentials.
Different Weather Conditions
The Seattle and Denver launches will also test the drone delivery network across a wider range of weather conditions. Seattle is known for frequent rain and wet weather, while Denver experiences colder temperatures and winter conditions.
Wing said expanding into these markets will demonstrate how its delivery technology can operate across different climates. The company expects the new locations to provide valuable experience as it continues building a larger nationwide drone delivery network.
Walmart Pushes Delivery Innovation
The expansion reflects Walmart’s broader efforts to improve its delivery capabilities and compete in an increasingly technology-driven retail market. Drone delivery could offer customers a faster alternative for smaller, time-sensitive orders while helping Walmart expand its same-day fulfillment options.
With Seattle and Denver joining the network, Walmart and Wing are moving closer to their goal of establishing drone delivery across nearly 20 major U.S. markets and eventually serving customers from hundreds of stores nationwide.
