OpenAI is preparing to enter the consumer hardware market with a portable, Screen-Free AI Speaker smart speaker designed to function as an AI companion for the home, according to people familiar with the project. The device, which remains under development, is expected to mark the company’s first major step beyond software and AI models into consumer electronics.
Unlike traditional smart Screen-Free AI Speaker , the product is envisioned as a new kind of home computer built specifically for the AI era. It is designed to offer a more natural, conversational experience while integrating the capabilities of ChatGPT into everyday household activities.
Designed as a Human like Companion
The AI-powered speaker is expected to assist users with a wide range of tasks, including controlling smart-home devices, playing music and other media, answering questions, responding to messages, and managing routine activities. OpenAI aims to make the device more than just a voice assistant by giving it the ability to develop a deeper understanding of its owner over time.
According to sources, the system will become increasingly personalised as it learns user preferences and habits. The goal is to anticipate needs, provide relevant information proactively, and act as a knowledgeable digital assistant rather than simply responding to commands.
Although intended primarily for use inside the home, the Screen-Free AI Speaker will be lightweight and portable, allowing users to move it easily between rooms.
Focus on Personality and Interaction
One of the device’s most distinctive features is expected to be its ability to engage with users in a more humanlike manner. OpenAI reportedly believes that personality and emotional connection will be key differentiators in the emerging AI hardware market.
To reinforce that experience, the speaker will incorporate mechanical elements capable of subtle movement, giving it a more lifelike presence. The device is also expected to use personal information, such as emails and other user data—with appropriate permissions—to better understand its owner and deliver more relevant responses and recommendations.
Expanding Competition in Consumer Technology
The launch would represent a significant strategic expansion for OpenAI as it prepares for a widely anticipated initial public offering. By entering the consumer hardware segment, the company would compete more directly with technology giants including Apple, Amazon and Google, all of which already offer AI-powered smart home devices.
The move comes amid heightened industry tensions. Apple recently filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging the company misappropriated trade secrets. However, sources familiar with the project said OpenAI believes its upcoming speaker is fundamentally different from Apple’s existing products and does not infringe on the iPhone maker’s intellectual property.
If successful, the device could signal a new direction for Screen-Free AI Speaker consumer electronics, shifting the focus from screen-based interactions to more natural, personalised and conversational computing experiences.
