Tina Mara: Inspiring People to Transform, Achieve Greatness and Spread Positivity

Award Winning Awakening Mentor & Expert in guiding HSPs, Inutitives and Empaths on their Journey to Higher Levels of Consciousness.

Motivational Speakers and Programs are BIG in the market. In 2020, the market in the US alone was estimated to be worth $ 1.9 billion. By 2025, it is expected to grow to $2.30 billion. Line events, online videos, and more are finding their way into people’s daily routines. However, for personal growth, people need more than motivation. They need inspiration.

Why? Because Motivation is triggered by outside conditions and wears off as soon as the immediate problem is fixed, whereas Inspiration comes from within, stays for the long run, and helps to transform every area of life permanently. The general challenge with Personal Growth is that many people want it – but only a few people commit to the inner work that is necessary to make it happen. It is inconvenient, it feels uncomfortable, and it requires discipline and the willingness to change patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaviour – while our brains are wired to seek comfort; so good old Self Sabotage will kick in quite soon.

That’s the reason why people know that they should change – but never do it. Now pause for a minute and ask yourself honestly: Are you the Star in the Movie of your life or just a film extra? Hint: If no one told you yet – You are here to be the Star! And if you don’t know how to be the Star, Tina Mara Linne is happy to help you write a better script, starting today! Tina believes in the power of intuition, asking better questions, providing a non-judgemental space, shifting perspectives and creating lasting results for her clients. “I don’t want them to be dependent on my service – On the contrary. I want them to flourish, grow to the top of their game and transform on all levels. Their success is my greatest reward and biggest joy,” reveals Tina.

Helping People Transform

After hearing so many clients in the past 15 years say how much they love her great energy, compassion and positive attitude towards life Tina just went with the natural flow to become a Chief Wellbeing Officer for them, serving her fellow human beings as an Inspirational Muse, Consciousness Educator and Wisdom Keeper whenever the going gets tough for them.

Tina offers grounded, heart-centred & intuitive guidance to help corporate teams and individuals to access emotional maturity (there are many emotional teenagers running around in adult bodies!), support them to navigate with ease through professional and personal relationships, challenging business situations and permanently break through their limiting belief systems. To uncover the stories that hold people back from reaching their personal best and help them to feel true confidence is one of the Superpowers she just loves to share.

Tina shares inspirational Key Notes, 1:1 Mentoring and Group Sessions as well as the absolute Gold Standard Online Program in Personal Growth available on the market today, also known as the “Elite Mentorship Forum”. To become an Elite Mentorship Trainer, she went through the 6-month Program myself, guided by the World Class Speaker, Mentor and Serial Entrepreneur Peter Sage, who is considered to be the No. 1 Expert in Human Behaviour in the Personal Growth arena.

Finding her Path

Tina didn’t become a personal growth coach overnight or one fine day. It took time, unconscious and conscious efforts on the part of the universe and her to embark on this journey. Tina has been a curious and practical person in all areas of life – one reason that led her to check out many different business sectors. After she finished school, she sincerely had no idea about her future profession. So, she did what most of my friends were doing: Going to university but got bored and quit in a year.

She then went into the Fashion Industry for Commercial Assistant Training, and got her first job as a Managing Director in a Concept Store, followed by Creative Direction and Event Management in a Full-Service Agency, where she worked e.g. for Credit Suisse, Eurex and GlaxoSmithKline. It was exhausting – so she decided that her employment days are over and founded her own Marketing and PR Agency, where she worked with clients like Fiat, Alfa Romeo, European Investment Bank, Swarovski, Cocoon Event and even helped organise an event for His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Tina went back to employment once more from 2019 to 2022 as a CEO for the Charity Organisation Make-A-Wish in Germany because she loved the Mission to grant life-changing wishes for seriously ill children. When she was around 30 (working at the agency), she was stressed, struggled with severe headaches frequently, consumed too much alcohol, felt miserable in a narcissistic relationship and was going out every weekend to feel some kind of relief from her day-to-day reality. She always heard this voice inside her head that said: “There is more” – So she went out to find what exactly that “More” was.

For 17 years Tina invested serious amounts of Time, Energy and Money into her search for universal Truth. She became a Yoga & Meditation Teacher, an Elite Mentorship Trainer for Peter Sage, learned several Energy Balancing Techniques, Reiki, studied the Science and Language of Colour, the Tree of Life, Numerology, Astrology, Quantum Mechanics, Epigenetics and Psycho-Neuro-Immunology – And found out from many different angles that the human existence is an incredible miracle and the greatest adventure we will ever experience – If we understand what it is all about.

“As long as we limit our experience to the 5 senses and our body, we miss 99.9% of what we are really capable of. That’s why I have chosen to establish “Feeling Unlimited” Inspirational Life Mentoring in 2022. It is my greatest passion to light other humans up, show them how to unlock their incredible and unlimited potential and ultimately make this world a more conscious place for all of us,” says Tina.

Facing her Challenges

There were many challenges Tina had to overcome, and she shares the most recent one. She just learned that she was pregnant with her second son in 2019 and at the same time got offered the CEO position for Make-A-Wish Germany. She wasn’t feeling well in the first 3 months of the pregnancy and the birth date was in the middle of the main Fundraising season, which is the busiest time of the year for a Non-Profit and the Organisation just got started in Germany. Even if her brain came up with a plethora of reasons why she could not and should not do it – her heart said yes. So, she did it.

Even with Covid hitting Germany in Spring 2020 (her first day back from Maternity leave was Lockdown) Tina managed to double the donations and number of granted wishes in two subsequent years. How did she do it? By harnessing and using the power of the universal laws and working in harmony with them. By doing the internal work required to attract extraordinary outside results every day. By trusting that she lives in a friendly universe and that things will always work out for her. By believing without the

slightest doubt that she can achieve anything she wanted for the Organisation but most of all for the benefit of the kids and their families. Her biggest Takeaway?

“As soon as I was willing to surrender my fears and the “small Self” (also known as the Ego) to a Higher Power – Call it God, Goddess, the Universe or the Quantum Field – Everything changed for the better. After all, the Quantum Field is the Field where ALL possibilities exist simultaneously – I just had to learn how to navigate it,” reveals Tina.

Guided by the Universe

Tina shares that we live in a vibrational universe and we are energetic beings. We become exactly what we think and feel most of the time. Consequently, she monitors her thoughts and feelings very closely – after all, they create her reality! Over the years, she trained herself to be keenly aware of what is going on in her mind and heart. To accomplish anything significant and make a difference in the world, she must act from a place of purpose. After experiencing two Burn Outs, she stepped back from achieving and chose to create a sense of fulfilment for herself and others instead. She always says that Higher Consciousness is the No. 1 Leadership Skill we need to foster – For a better future on this planet we all share.

She firmly says, “Our media and society constantly tell us that we need to work harder, need to be afraid of this and that, strive more, look better and younger, be a better parent, be more successful, have bigger muscles, lose weight….Did you ever realize that all of this just triggers our primary fear that we are somehow flawed and “Not good enough?” As soon as I figured out that true power and validation can only come from within, I stopped looking for approval from the outside – And found a sense of Freedom that is priceless.”

The Mantra to a Fulfilling Life

Consciousness and Self Awareness are key to living a fulfilled life and creating a better world for everyone, believes Tina. Sadly, this is not taught (yet) at schools. People should realise that there are only a handful of basic human needs: Security, Variety, Appreciation, Significance, Growth and Contribution. So, ask yourself: What is your main driver in business? Do you want to feel secure? Do you want to experience adventures? Do you need to feel significant? Do you want to be liked? Or do you aim for goals that are less ego-centric and more directed towards a greater good and benefit for all? The important thing about goal setting is not reaching the goal. It is about who you have to become to reach your goal.

“To keep calm and centered (even if the world goes crazy) I recommend you start to set aside some time every day to observe your inner world. No Mobile Phone, no distractions. Learn how to meditate. Journal. Stop consuming TV and the News. Get a good mentor that has already achieved what you want to achieve and can guide you from a place of authenticity. Write your personal and professional goals down. Read them out loud every day. Know where you stand and where you want to go. Don’t talk about any goal until you gained some momentum. Don’t allow outside conditions to have any effect on your positive attitude,” advises Tina.

Adapting Changes

Change is the only constant in this Universe. Tina embraces, celebrates and welcomes it. A successful entrepreneur needs to be really comfortable with the feeling of uncertainty, she believes. “I have no idea and I can’t control what is happening behind the scenes of the Movie that is my life – But I absolutely know that if I make an effort and put in the inner and outer work that is required to keep my frequency high, only good things are attracted to me – Now and in the Future. It is Law,” she says.

When it comes to taking up modern ways to provide services through technology, while she loves being old school in the process, she is also utilizing several modern tools to create effective programs.

Tina says, “To be honest, I am quite Old School. I believe in journaling and handwriting because it builds more connections in the brain than writing on a keyboard. I believe in reading books – Leaders are always Readers. I believe in the power of being human, having compassion, love and lifting others. I believe in the innate and ancient intelligence that is present everywhere in the universe and most of all in our ability to check into that genius frequency and become supernatural beings ourselves. But apart from that, leveraging the benefits of AI and automation tools to become more effective and create better results in less time is great.”

Expanding her Horizons

Tina’s vision is to transform and elevate as many lives as she possibly can. she feels humanity must educate our Leaders, Teachers and Caregivers in consciousness, universal laws and how to tap into their higher brain functions so they in turn can teach and enlighten the next generations. She wants to create a global online faculty and make essential wisdom teachings available to everyone who is ready to receive it, collaborating with the best experts, leaders and speakers in the industry.

“I also plan to create retreat properties, designed to offer a 360-degree transformational experience for the guests by combining awe-inspiring, highly energetic locations with exceptional interior concepts, outstanding service, delicious food and immersive, life-altering coaching programs,” concludes Tina.

“Listen more, talk less. Feel more, think less. Learn how to follow your heart, it is infinitely wise. All the answers you seek are within you. You are enough and a unique gift to this world, so dare to shine your light unapologetically. The only way out….is IN.”

Dr. Takahisa Karita: An Entrepreneur with a Stellar Vision and Business Acumen

op 10 Business Leaders to Watch in 2023 by International Business Times. Top Serial Entrepreneur of The Year 2024 by IAOTP. Forbes Business Council Member. SDGs, Climate Action, Blockchain, AI, IP licensing experts

Many people aspire to be an entrepreneur. Some dare to realize that dream. A few aspirants fail in their attempt and a few succeed. Rare are those who have a knack for understanding the right opportunities and creating not just one but many successful businesses. Dr. Takahisa Karita is one of them. Known as a “serial entrepreneur” not only in Japan but also worldwide, Dr. Karita has extensive experience in creating and growing businesses in various sectors and regions.

Starting Young

While a student at a university in Japan, Dr. Karita worked as a volleyball coach for three years at a girls’ high school, one of the strongest schools in Japan. This led him to plan and get a high school teacher’s license after graduating from a university in Japan and getting a job at a private high school in Japan. However, at the time he was working as a coach, sports medicine was not yet widespread in Japan, so he keenly felt the need for it, and studied sports medicine in the United States. Soon, he dropped out of university and returned to Japan, and while working as a tutor at a cram school, his father invited him to participate in the launch of a bio-venture as a managing director at the age of 26. That was the start of his managerial career.

Later Dr. Karita became the representative director, launched a bio-venture company, and served as an officer and advisor to various companies. Currently, he is the CFO of CDTEC China, a company that operates a service platform for educational institutions that has been installed in more than 5,000 kindergartens in China. Dr. Karita is also a co-founder of Unify Platform AG in Switzerland, which operates UNIPLAT. The UNIPLAT is the world’s first online platform that promotes the matching of entrepreneurs and researchers who support the SDGs advocated by the United Nations, regardless of their economic or geographical conditions and their supporters (investors, VCs, accelerators, HNWIs, etc.) from all over the world. In addition, he serves as a senior advisor to more than 10 institutions and provides management support to each organization.

“The reason why I chose the current SNS industry is that I wanted to build a global ecosystem that works with everyone to solve the SDGs and confront climate change, without being aware of the borders of the whole world,” he says.

Tapping Potentials

In most of the institutions Dr. Karita works with, his role is to pioneer new and untapped business areas and build a global ecosystem to follow. As an idea his team has developed, the credit rating of participants on the supported side in UNIPLAT, the NFT conversion of all posted content (live streaming archives, videos, documents) and the throwing of money by Ethereum to the content, and the AI for creating business plans are all attracting attention as innovative services worldwide. It was covered by many media outlets.

In addition, Vector Holdings Inc., a listed company (TSE Standard Code: 2656) for which he serves as an advisor, began providing regular information on climate change and AI, which still need to be recognized in Japan, as the cornerstone of its new business last summer. While incorporating cutting-edge information from around the world, it delivers information that even complete beginners can understand Climate Change and AI and has been well received.

A Unifying Platform

Pharmaceutical research has often been driven by incentives and publications, limiting the scope of open collaboration. However, Dr. Karita envisions a future where individual researchers can join and share research projects and outcomes. Therefore, he saw the need to build the world’s first platform for recruiting research partners, enabling more researchers and companies to work together and achieve innovative research outcomes, such as patent filings (protection of research results) and others.

Launched in September 2021, Unify Platform AG has more than 100,000 participants from 135 countries as of December 2023, with 52 advisory board members and 84 companies and organizations participating to promote UNIPLAT’s idea generation and the development of a global ecosystem. As an online platform, UNIPLAT maintains its unique marketability in terms of its specialization in solving the SDGs, the diversity of participants and their content, and the introduction of many of the latest technologies such as Web3 and AI.

This platform is a new way for researchers to share their work and get funding. It allows them to livestream their research to a wide audience, including potential collaborators and sponsors. It also enables ordinary people to interact with and support various

researchers, creating a democratic funding model similar to crowdfunding. Unify’s goal is to foster a network of specialized knowledge literacy and to achieve a fair and balanced distribution of knowledge that supports the SDGs and world peace.

Facing the Hard Days

The hardest moment in his career was during the Lehman shock, which was a global economic recession. Due to the sudden closure of the public underwriting department of the lead underwriter securities that Dr. Karita had contracted with his company at the time to apply for listing, he was forced to abandon the management of the company that was in the period immediately before the IPO and sell the company. That is why he decided to reset all his businesses and start his career from scratch.

“As a business owner, I learned a lot from that experience about how vulnerable businesses are against uncertain risks. I don’t know if I was able to overcome that situation at the time. However, even after that, I continued to participate in various projects regardless of my own preferences, just to survive day by day. As a result, I was able to identify the business that I really wanted to do, and I think it led to overcoming the challenges,” he shares.

Guided by Innovation

Innovation, per Dr. Karita, leads to higher customer satisfaction for users who use the service. In addition, he says, we live in an era in which the culture and economy centered on users are constantly changing. Innovation is necessary to ensure that it is always applied optimally. In addition to differences in countries and ethnicities, users in the same market will become increasingly diverse, including the generation gap. Innovation is always needed to include them.

Challenges in the Industry

Dr. Karita shares that one of the challenges that must be solved in the online platform industry is the protection of the vast amount of data storage, especially the protection of users’ private information. Currently, there are regulations such as the GDPR, which was enacted in Europe and is considered to be the strictest internationally, but it cannot be said that this problem is uniform worldwide. He explains that there are two main solutions. The first is a blockchain, based on distributed data storage that supports internationally

unified quantum technology. The R&D in this field is progressing very well in many places, and Dr. Karita is personally optimistic that it can be achieved. The second is the construction of data centers in borderless regions (including extraterrestrial planets) that have been internationally agreed upon. He is personally concerned that this will take a lot of time to achieve consensus among the stakeholders.

“In the online platform industry, software development tends to take precedence and hardware countermeasures tend to follow, and I think that there are many cases where it is not perfect. The earth itself is prone to natural disasters, and there are many issues to be addressed, such as the development of places and facilities that can withstand them, and the construction of a system that can minimize power consumption and utilize renewable energy. The development of specialists and developers in the field of hardware is also an international issue,” he shares.

Predicting Industry Trends

Dr. Karita believes that the borderless online platform and the diversity of participants will be greatly improved. He also predicts that the need for democratic, autonomous platform systems, such as DAOs, will increase. UNIPLAT has already taken these measures, and they believe that they will be able to build them by 2024. In the next 5 years, they would like to increase the number of countries of origin of UNIPLAT participants to 196 countries (the number of countries in the world as of 2023). “And even if I don’t get involved, I want to make full use of the current GenZ generation, the DAO, and the AI so that we can run UNIPLAT autonomously,” he says.

Currently, we can easily obtain not only information on the Internet but also timely macro information and customer-level information on SNS. Dr. Karita thinks it is a good idea for managers to constantly acquire and share information on various SNSs. It’s also important to build a collection with key people in the industry. In order to build connections with these key people, he feels it is a good idea to share management information other than confidential information on SNS.

Words of Encouragement

For the young and aspiring entrepreneurs, Dr. Karita’s message is as follows:

“I want entrepreneurs to determine the business they want to do for the rest of their lives

without compromising. No matter how difficult it is, if they can contribute to society in their own way, there will always be supporters. I want them to not care if it’s big or small, and to push forward as entrepreneurs.”

Quote: “When in doubt, make your own way.”

Quote: “We want to support more entrepreneurs and researchers around the world, and people who want to start their own businesses as much as possible. To that end, we believe that we can build a stronger relationship of trust as a team.”

Rapid Fires:

1. How would you sum up your 2023: It was a time when we had to adapt to change.

2. A Contemporary Leader You Admire: Mr. Bill Gates

3. A Book/Audiobook you are currently Reading/Listening: “Principles for Dealing with The Changing World Order” by Ray Dalio

4. Your biggest role model: Hideo Karita, my late grandfather, wanted to build an international sphere of peace centered on Asia.

5. Success to you is: To produce many leaders who can bring peace to the world.

When she’s not with clients or giving back, Kathy can be found spending time with her family and friends, relaxing on the lake, Hiking, or Golfing.

Navigating Change: Real Estate in the Age of Transformation

In the ever-evolving landscape of real estate, change is our constant companion. Kathy concurs that technological advancements, shifting customer needs, and evolving expectations are propelling the industry forward. To deal with the impending changes, one must be well informed courtesy reading from reliable sources, making positive use of the internet, through hands-on experience and finally training and more training.

Kathy points out that COVID-19 triggered an unprecedented wave of change. In her 30 years as a real estate professional, she had never witnessed such rapid transformation. Customers need and expectations changed. From shelter to sanctuary, homes took on new significance. Customers sought safety, comfort, and flexible spaces. The process of how Buyers previewed homes and how they bought homes, With changing Buyer Behavior sight-unseen purchases became commonplace. Offers soared above asking prices, often bypassing inspections and contingencies. With buyer dilemma setting in, many buyers sold their homes for top dollar but are caught in the middle of getting top dollar and paying top dollar for less of a home than they recently sold. Many Buyers were living and still are with family in campgrounds and rental properties. Rental properties were all at full occupancy and rental rates had increased tremendously for many unaffordable.

As agents, Kathy and her team had to adapt their negotiation strategies. Agility was key. They had to learn new and better ways of negotiating and doing business to stay competitive. “ It seems as if everyone and their cousin had decided to change careers and become a Real Estate Agent,” comments Kathy.

The real estate office environment changed as well. Agents met via Zoom as opposed to weekly office meetings, they worked from home and experienced rapid changes in the technology being put to use. Post covid not much has changed, feels Kathy. While some things returned to normal, others remained in flux. Getting agents re-engaged into the office environment and group participation has been a struggle, to say the least. However, performance and customer satisfaction are still as paramount as it was pre-COVID.

As the Managing Broker Kathy had to keep a pulse on the market and the rapid changes in the industry so they could train to change but be willing to change again next week. “What we learned in yesterday’s meetings, would be obsolete in next week’s meetings. Being a veteran in the business I knew the “unicorn market” would be short-lived and all the agents that got in the real estate business when business was easy might not be around when it’s time to roll up your sleeves and start working hard. We are back to negotiating the price, back to working through inspections, and coddling each transaction to the closing table,” says Kathy.

The After Effects of COVID

Post-pandemic, the industry is still facing changes. It has created a hybrid office work environment. With lots of individuals changing their careers to become real estate agents, Kathy shares that they had to have a better skill level than ever be more efficient at what they do, and respond quicker than ever before to the consumer.

At the consumer end, their ideas of homeownership changed. Suddenly it was a necessity for a home office, family, and entertaining space, luxury items such as pools and hot tubs also became a frequent request. Many homes were sold over the internet and have become the norm and an ongoing request. The value of homeownership changed in the consumer’s eyes almost overnight. “We as agents are

tasked post-COVID to retrain the consumer to realize the market has changed once again and what worked for your neighbor may not work for you when buying or selling. The real estate business is geographically like the weather, just because it’s sunny in Tennessee doesn’t mean it’s sunny in the neighboring state or even the adjoining area,” says Kathy.

Current Challenges and Potential Solutions in the Real Estate Industry

The delicate balance of supply and demand shapes the real estate landscape. Kathy points out that unfortunately, they face critical challenges that impact both buyers and builders. There is an Affordability Crisis. The dream of homeownership remains elusive for many. A severe undersupply of affordable and traditional housing compounds the issue. First-time buyers and those without substantial equity find themselves on the sidelines. The soaring cost of homes, coupled with rising interest rates, pushes ownership out of reach. There needs to be a provision for more affordable housing and creative financing options till the market conditions change.

The industry is also undergoing Building Blues. Aspiring homeowners seeking to build face a labyrinth of obstacles as there is a Builder Shortage and Available builders are scarce. Some projects stretch to over two-year timeline due to sluggish supply chains for materials. Due to the impact of Inflation building materials become costlier than initially quoted and during mid-construction, buyers encounter unexpected price hikes.

The industry also grapples with a scarcity of skilled professionals. There also is a shortage of skilled and experienced surveyors and professionals such as plumbers, electricians, general repairmen, movers, etc.

The solutions, suggests Kathy, lie in a multi-pronged approach. There needs to be a reduction in interest Rate. Lower interest rates can ease the burden on buyers. It is crucial to create more affordable Housing Initiatives. There is a need for Skilled Workforce Development and firms need to encourage training and attract new talent to the trades. Exploring creative and innovative financing models can make homeownership accessible and affordable for middle-class Americans.

Being Prepared for the Future

Change is a constant, regardless of the market. Staying attuned to market dynamics and actively listening to consumer needs and expectations are essential survival strategies. Consistent reading and ongoing training play a pivotal role.

“In our industry, flexibility is non-negotiable. We must adapt swiftly and execute the necessary protocols to sustain our business. As an owner, I perpetually seek out the right people and growth opportunities, ensuring our business continues to thrive and evolve,” says Kathy.

Further, she says that having a diverse age of associates is another key to survival and tenure in business. A mix of seasoned associates and fresh talent ensures longevity. Kathy invests in training and mentorship for both groups.

“I always keep cultivating and training new associates, along with nurturing and mentoring the experienced associates, then helping develop succession plans for the associates that are ready for the next chapter in life. Being a good leader means treating your team of associates as a valuable entity and consistently setting each one of them up for growing their business. in any given market with new tools

and new opportunities. In the coming years, I’m looking for growth for most, succession for some, and a constant influx of new aspiring associates with new ideas and new opportunities,” concludes Kathy.

Marion Burchell: Providing Practical and Pragmatic Solutions for Individual and Organizational Success

Managing Director Azolla Holdings Pty Ltd | Board Member | Innovator | Speaker | Writer

Traditional consulting companies build their model around a cookie-cutter approach. They develop a framework or methodology and then sell it to customers in a replicated way at the same price of development. The over-reliance on the framework and methodology (trust the process) results in client outputs, such as a report. It is a very siloed approach allowing consultants to on-sell into another team and extending their revenue tail. For instance, you might have contracted for a strategy, and then be on-sold change management to help implement it. Then a digital platform to provide an efficient reporting system, and so on.

Azolla, however, is different. The company is focused on delivering outcomes by providing bespoke services to its clients through deep design. This means they provide a multi-layered and multi-disciplinary design methodology that combines everything their clients need to be successful. And they know it works based on the measured metrics, customer feedback, and documented qualitative evidence.

The Inspiration

The company takes its name from Azolla, an unassuming aquatic plant that changed the history of our world. Many millennia ago, the earth’s environment was different. This small aquatic plant, uninhibited by a lack of oxygen, water, and nitrogen, was able to grow and create the atmosphere we have today. This allowed for other organisms to reach their potential. The impact was so powerful that scientists call it The Azolla Effect. It is an analogy for what the company does with its clients.

Led by a scientist and sociologist by trade, Marion Burchell who chose a management and leadership stream, Azolla helps people, teams, and organizations by providing bespoke, deep design and multi-disciplinary layered ways to solve their pain points and challenges to have a bigger impact.

“The world we live in is changing. Our operating environment was stable, and what was required to solve a challenge was relatively known. The traditional way was created at a time when factories were not automated and relied on human power. The organizational structures, processes, and procedures implemented reinforced these ways of working. These, while relevant at the time, no longer serve us. New contemporary approaches to thinking, ways of working, and doing things are required to successfully navigate the complex and ambiguous operating environment in which we find ourselves,” reasons Marion.

Organizations are an extension of ourselves and our own experiences, knowledge, and capabilities. Therefore, for an organization to be successful it requires its people to grow and contribute in different ways. Azolla helps the client achieve this by leveraging its own diverse experiences, insights, and practices that they know work, mixed with best practices, methodologies, and academic frameworks. It’s a yin and yang approach – analytical with creative, practical with academic, strategic with implementation.

A Journey Made of Experience and Perspective

Where we are in our life journey is a culmination of our choices and experiences. It is for this reason Marion is an experience collector, as it helps develop a broader perspective and provides a deeper life practice.

Given this, it comes as no surprise that her professional journey is littered with a variety of different jobs from strategy, policy, planning, intergovernmental relations, innovation, digital and data reform, to different industries such as water, agriculture and food, cyber security, social and community safety, and different sectors such a government, resources, consulting, academia and not for profit. To the uninitiated, this may appear disparate however they are bound by commonality in curiosity, challenging oneself, and continuous learning.

Marion served as the first female Government Chief Information Officer for Western Australia, driving social inclusion, cyber security, and inter-jurisdictional data sharing. She led the design and implementation of the State’s first innovation strategy, the open data policy, and digital reform. Marion was instrumental in the development of the Office of the GCIO indicative of the priority and importance of technology to delivering better services to people. Her work was key to securing a $25m innovation fund and ensured focus on regular delivery of key initiatives to build momentum in the ecosystem and showcase the value of developing and supporting startups to the economy. She also negotiated a cyber security agreement which secured significant investment in local startups with scalable solutions to business challenges.

Marion provides advice to executives as well as being a non-executive Board member. She has trained with international experts in their fields, as well as delivered sessions of her own including to CEOs and entrepreneurs on Sir Richard Branson’s private island, Necker. She has over 20 publications (policies, guidelines, protection plans), several conference papers, and peer-reviewed journal articles. Her work has been cited as best practice internationally.

“These experiences enable me to help teams and organizations to re-imagine what is possible so they can create value and have a positive impact in the lives of their customers, their team, as well as their own. As a result, I created the company to have a bigger impact and a global influence,” she says.

A Balanced Working Style

As a leader, Marion’s job is to enable people to bring their best selves to the table and create an environment where they feel safe to share, participate, and empowered to deliver. She is very clear about direction, outcomes that need to be delivered, and who needs to be involved based on the capabilities required, and will remove any barriers or challenges to getting there. She is open about team members flagging early any issues so

that they can be managed or mitigated quickly and always gives credit when due. Innovation, evidence-based logic, co-design, and a good narrative are at the core – that is, a balanced blend of science and creativity.

Overcoming Challenges

Firstly, Marion doesn’t see things as challenges, she views them as opportunities to grow and demonstrate abilities to others, and yourself, that you didn’t know you had until that moment. These opportunities provide a testament to one’s spirit, true leadership qualities, and emotional intelligence.

“I have found that at each point of my career where there has been growth, this growth has occurred due to being challenged, and overcoming it. Those challenges were appropriate to moving to the next part of my evolution,” she says.

Marion says it is easy to get caught up in focusing on how one is different.

“I have been everything. The only female. The youngest person. The racially different. The newest person. The diverse thinker. These things can be the most challenging experience – if you let it. For me, I have always focused on:

– What’s the actual problem we are trying to solve?

– What’s the outcome we are looking to achieve?

– How can we have the best impact by creating a winning situation for everyone?

– What and who is required to achieve it?

By focusing everyone on commonalities and unifying people to a common cause, many of the potential obstacles I could have faced disappeared,” she explains.

The Right Use of Technology

Technology, feels Marion, is a tool that enables you to deliver an outcome. It is only part of the delivery solution. There is a myth that:

– Technology is the silver bullet that will solve the pain points and problems

– That being a contemporary or high-performing organization means having the latest technologies

– That having the latest technologies will result in greater market share or better outcomes

– That the solution is more technology

Instead, what we see is organizations end up investing lots of time and money in technologies that do not resolve the issue and make it worse as it results in multiple processes and systems.

Success comes from planning and doing the work upfront, usually driven by the business, to determine:

– What is actually needed (might not be technology)

– Redesign processes and ways of working

– Identify the actual key problem or pain point (it might not be the obvious)

– Consideration of practical implementation

This work is generally done with a keen focus on the technology or process, with little regard for the human aspect. “It is little wonder technology transformations fail or do not result in full benefit realization. We place the human back into the process – it goes beyond human-centered design,” she says.

Current Challenges in the Industry

Status quo thinking combined with the accelerated pace of delivery means people are not getting the required time and space to do good design. This is leading to poor outcomes such as:

– There is a focus on delivering against time (quality compromised)

– Potential consequences are not considered or designed for

– Assumptions are not tested due to hubris, living in a bubble of conformity,

– Ego-driven decision-making based on bias or thinking we are the experts

– Lack of accountability or curiosity

Yes, technology has changed our world, but much of our world remains the same, as at the core are humans. We think technology is the solution. Technology is only an enabler. This is why Azolla focuses on putting the human back into the center of the modern age.

Meeting Bigger Goals in the Coming Years

Marion wants her team to make a bigger impact in the coming years. Part of the reason for becoming an entrepreneur, for her, was to have a larger reach and be limitless. Marion and her team have not built their model using traditional MBA logic. They are not bound by geography and can deliver their services either face-to-face or digitally.

Their focus has always been on where they can have a positive impact, working with clients who are serious about high performance, delivering better outcomes, and continuously improving. This is evident in Azolla’s track record and client testimonials. Their clients are even award nominees based on the work they have delivered together.

Drawing Inspiration

Dead Poets Society is a film that profoundly influenced Marion and is deeply part of who she is today. Carpe Diem – or seize the day – is therefore the quote she lives by and finds helpful.

“It helps to remind us that opportunity is fleeting, as is life, so make the most of it. It aligns nicely with my upbringing and the parental mantras that were used like “If you don’t ask you don’t get”, “What’s the worst they can say? No?”, and “You never know if you don’t try”,” shares Marion.

“Recently I was watching “The Politician” on Netflix and there was a brilliant piece of writing, “There is more honor in defeat than unused potential.” Sometimes we need a reminder to keep us on track, inspiration to show us what is possible, or a circuit breaker to overcome inertia (comfortableness) and place us in motion away from mediocrity. That is what Carpe Diem is for me. A reminder to be authentic and true to self as that is how we can contribute our gifts to the world, live a full life, and challenge ourselves to reach our potential,” she concludes.

To be Designed:

Message for the Entrepreneurs:

Don’t get caught up in the good opinion of other people (GOOP). They are not you. They do not have your dreams, knowledge, experience, or skills. Some people will be genuine about their advice, placing your interests first. They will only be a handful. Know who they are. Many others, whether consciously or not, will have an opinion that is ill-informed, reflective of jealousy, will bring you back into the fold of the status quo, or manipulate you for their own benefit. You cannot change this, and in fact, doing so is only a waste of your energy which can be used more impactfully productive by focusing on what you want to achieve.

There is no time like now to be an entrepreneur. The traditional structures, systems, and ways of working no longer serve us. They were born during a period of industrialization and factory processes. We are seeing the start of a shift in the evolution of work which will result in a re-design. Much more than this, power is shifting. Trust has eroded in traditional sectors such as government (the lowest trust ratings), large corporates that have taken customers for granted and extorted them (e.g. Qantas, Facebook), and religious institutions (sexual abuse scandals). This has created a void that is currently being filled by entrepreneurs who are developing businesses that not only inspire us, and evolve us, but are far more layered in their design by focusing on multiple outcome benefits by being profitable, environmental, and delivering social impact.

Quote: “Our clients drive our market competitiveness as they apply for awards, and provide on-going testimonials and referrals.”

Quote: “Our clients proudly share the impact internally and externally of the programs we have delivered in partnership with them.”

Tina Thörner: A Multi-Faceted, Result-oriented and Purposeful Leader

Human Resources Manager Moelven Edanesågen | Graduate Personnel Scientist

From growing up on a farm to becoming one of Sweden’s most successful co-drivers in rally with three gold medals in the world championship. Tina Thörner was formed to become a result-oriented and purposeful girl, with a creative mind to solve the challenges facing her in life.

Some people have inspiring tales to tell. A few live an inspiring tale. Tina Thörner is one of the latter.

Growing up on a farm in Värmlandsnäs, a northern peninsula of Lake Vänern, Sweden, Tina learned to work hard and be proactive. Her grandmother’s motto was, “Nothing happens if you do nothing”. Her family taught her to focus on what she can control and pursue her goals. These cherished moments of her childhood taught her the lesson of her life to be a resilient and driven woman who never quits.

Always in the Driver’s Seat

Growing up, Tina had a passion for different sports and she collected many prizes in different disciplines. She wanted to become a fighter pilot in the 80s, an unusual choice for young girls then. After spending over a year at a flying school in Albuquerque, New Mexico (US) she encountered a block as Sweden didn’t allow women in force back then, so she continued with her study of economics.

At the gymnasium, Tina met her first boyfriend who was an upcoming rally driver in Sweden. Intrigued by speed and the sport, she joined him and they started competing together. They were to become professionals in 1989 when she lost him to an accident. That turned her world “upside-down” at the time and held her back for a while from the sport.

However, sometimes you heal where you hurt. In 1990 Tina was asked to co-drive for a professional Scottish female rally driver at General Motors. Since then, she spent the next 25 years as a professional co-driver in rally alongside the fastest women and men, becoming female world champion co-driver 3 times and two times rally raid champion co-driver in the desert competition and finishing 2nd overall in the DAKAR rally.

In 2015 Tina switched to work for motorsport in a new way, by leading a new AI technology project as Race Director, making everyday drivers aware of how they, through focusing on their driving, can be a change for lowering CO2 while driving as well as lowering the risk of having a car accident. “This is called FIA Smart Driving Challenge, the world’s biggest CSR project, that was used during COP 28 in Dubai for all transport and is run with AI technology from Greater Than, a Swedish insurance TECH company, where I also am a board member today,” says Tina.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, as universities and educational institutions opened up and went live on the web, Tina decided to make use of remote study. She used this time and took to educating herself in something she has great passion for today. This summer of 2023, she graduated as a personnel scientist. “Throughout my rally career, I have always worked and supported our development within every team when it came to working conditions and how we could structure and work smarter as well as personal development, both physical and mental.

During this time in motorsport, I did a lot of educational certifications for example; NLP Coach, Mental trainer, Yoga instructor, project manager and leadership as well as Stress and- health pedagogue. For 20 years I have also done speeches about motivation, reaching goals, team building, leadership training & workshops and mental training,” shares Tina.

After graduation in 2023, she found an opportunity as HR Manager at the Sawmill in her home community where she grew up, in Värmland and she applied for it and got through. Since September 2023, Tina has been a part of Moelven Edanesågen, where she loves to come to work every day with her new team of 109 employees.

A New Track

Tina’s journey has been “very” different to navigate to where she is today. However, it is passion and her commitment to better herself every day that has brought her to her new role. As an HR Manager at Moelven Edanesågen, in the Wood industry, Tina is managing 109 co-workers at the sawmill outside Arvika in Värmland. She came into this new environment with her experience, knowledge, and ways of leading rally teams in the world rally- and rally raid championship. This was followed as Race Director for FIA SDC. Both areas were a Multikulti environment, working with 100% focus, no excuses, no whining, and 100% responsibility for each and one’s work assignments. This whole “leading style” has brought a “wake-up call” into a very Swedish “blue-collar” Traditional working environment.

“That someone arrives every morning with a “SUNSHINE MINDSET” spreading positive energy and keeping self-discipline– have for me felt like the biggest change in everyday meetings with my colleagues/co-workers. The response has been very positive and at the moment this is spreading among many more today. That has helped us as a team to open up and overcome challenges much more easily and with a smile while working hard,” shares Tina.

She started to send weekly news – using live video, something that the organization and her team had never experienced before, and today they wait to watch it every Thursday. Also, she has now created team leaders within every shift so that the company is spreading the leadership and making it “flatter” and more inclusive of all workers. As a leader, Tina is very open and transparent, so that her team knows where they have her.

“Using situated leadership built from coaching my team to question existing ways of acting and doing – daring to think and try new ways. My most valuable style is leading out of “unconditional love” within a very CLEAR “game plan with rules”,” she shares.

Tina loves to use the latest technology and that has been a “turnover” in her new role as the HR manager. She has directed and implemented new digital programs and tools to be just as updated as most modern sawmills. She has also well implemented new education for all personnel to update their digital skills and know-how. “Why waste time on doing work that technology can and will do better than us humans without any “cultural or personal” values? I have invested in and been a part of an entrepreneurial education platform for children of the world: www.youracademy.com. I am passionate about implementing technology wherever it can be of best and most efficient use,” she shares. One of the users are the orphan home in Bangui, Central Africa where I have been their sponsor since 2010 and we have gone through 2 civil wars and many challenges, but today many of the children have created their life success both with education, work and private life and contribute back to support the orphans home lead by Maria Theresia.

A Leading Player in the Wood Industry

Moelven is (not: one of) an European (not:largest) producers of wood loaders. Together, its sawmills produce about 2 million m3 of pine and spruce annually. Moelven is a Scandinavian industrial group that produces building products and systems for the construction industry. With sustainable spruce and pine as raw materials, Moelven’s wide-ranging product and service range makes them one of the leading players in the industry.

Moelven sells raw materials further for processing in other industries and uses it in its own products where it manufactures everything clients need in terms of wood for their home, lumber for industry, glulam, building modules, flexible office solutions, chips, and bioenergy. In 100 years, Moelven has evolved from having one factory in Moelv producing wagon wheels dipped in boiling oil, to an international timber processing group.

Sustainability is crucial to Moelven’s competitiveness. Therefore, they have set ambitious and concrete sustainability goals within four main areas – safeguarding natural resources, focusing on people, local values, and climate-smart products and services. They manage the renewable resources they live off with respect and care. They take responsibility for creating a safe workplace where they take care of people and the environment as their fundamental values.

“We are proud of our over 100-year-old history and look forward to the future, where the digital sawmill plays a key role: Moelven as a company is focused on Transforming from a very traditional to a HIGH TECH/DIGITAL sawmill industry with just as up to date using digital and high-tech tools in creating the best work/life balance for all its employees,” says Tina.

Also, speaking about the future, she says, “You can expect that Moelven Edanesågen will be a company to visit in 3 years’ time, when others need inspiration on how we have the most inspirational work/life balance and healthy and engaged workers, where all can and will take turns in leading their group and supporting the management with new ideas and solutions for improving both machines and humans.”

Turning Challenges into Achievement Milestones

Tina’s biggest challenge was when she became the co-driver of Nasser Al-Attiyah from Qatar, who, at that time, had never won an international rally. He joined Tina and their BMW team who came from winning the World Cup title. They joined together and they overcame it through training and practice on Swedish Icy roads and an attitude of never giving in. Even when they disagreed with each other on most points, they agreed on a mindset: always act with a mindset that “we were newly in love” (it is from Tina’s leading tool: unconditional love leadership which she developed and) “cool down the differences using NLP coaching on each other” (again from Tina’s education and license as NLP coach).

They won the title that year. This was a success and a Historical victory – since no mixed team in the world with a man from Qatar joined by a European woman – had won an international title.

“To be a female, succeeding and navigating her driver and team to this success in 2008– overcoming all challenges, both personal (cultural) as well as technical – and the skepticism against our mix, all the negative comments and so on – gave us “fuel” to coach each other gaining an even stronger MIND, to SHOW the sport and THE WORLD – that, as Nelson

Mandela told me when he visited our workshop in South Africa, where I was competing for Nissan – the sport will unite and overcome so many more bridges between people of any culture and collar, than politicians can do – to join in and work hand in hand to succeed. And RIGHT he was – Nasser and I proved it and after that we have been role models for equality in the Middle East, supporting and inspiring this – seeing how males and females are now working and competing more accepted and equal,” states Tina. A great example in the Dakar Rally that now is run in Saudi Arabia where local female drives compete against male competition on equal conditions.

What she did learn from it all was that when it comes to human “brain pictures” – the way each and every one of us believes, have been trained to believe from our surrounding’s from growing up – what is OK and not OK– this can be changed over time. We can enlighten each other with an exchange of knowledge between us – not having to give every solution a RIGHT or WRONG – just letting it be “one option” on how to handle life. Now when she leads, she asks: is this a law of nature (not changed by humans) or is it “man-made/developed/decided? If humans have implemented it – then for sure it can be changed, sometimes in the snap of our fingers, if we really want to! A very good example is when all the flights in the world was grounded over a period of a couple of weeks…

And her second question is- give me new ideas and ways to act on it from how we see and look upon the world we live in today. Too many rules and laws are “outdated” in the modern world of new knowledge and technology; that is why she leads and pushes for “new alternatives” before she lets the team decide and “just do like people before us did!

Challenges within the Industry

From Tina’s point of view, what holds the industry and many more back is humans leading at the top. She observes that the board members are not enough “representative” of the blend of ages, sexes, and cultures. People tend, most of the time, to fall back into the “like we have done it before” methodology to stay safe and sound and make things less challenging or hassle-free. Tina, on the other hand, is an entrepreneur, who loves to dare, try and if it does not work out, try it again but in a different way – and has the grit to try until it succeeds.

“Older people tend to not want to have a “bumpy” surrounding –while testing new = less stress = more time for other things. Of course, not all need and have to change too fast – but still, be more dynamic and daring than what is shown and acted by board members and

leaders of our business of today,” she says. We have so much more knowledge and are well educated, but still oft “know better than the way we act”. One example is how slow the work together as “world citizens” acting to achieve the values of the 17 United Nations Global Goals….

The Second point is that the board and top leaders can invest a lot in new technology –

but do not invest the percentage that is needed of that investment in developing the humans! Humans have a lack of staying updated with the latest in knowledge compared to the modern machines they are asked to run and deliver results together with. She feels that they should put in equal, if not more, attention towards developing the most crucial resource – the human resource.

Words of Experience and Wisdom

Tina concludes with the following message to the young entrepreneurs:

“Be aware of a “HEALTH/WORK LIFE”, the importance of the higher purpose for our environment and planet, and plan, act, and thrive businesses for generations to come as well as living the best of life while leading and working today – here and now.

Take In that each and every one of us has very little time where we are a part of this “life on our planet”. Share the leadership with each business employer and create for all together to have the best of possibilities to live and work with life quality out of each companies’ possibilities. Involve – share and thrive together as a TEAM in every business with an “INCLUDING” leadership. Dare to share responsibility and make consequences when the gameplan is not supported or followed as agreed.”

“Never become a lazy and boring grown-up with a locked mindset!”

“Condition your mind to spread warmth & energy like the sun in every meeting with every person, animal, or plant every day.”

“Moelven will continue to build a sustainable future in wood.”

Arlene Limas: Igniting Change and Empowering People and Organizations for A Safer Living

Chief Executive Officer at PAVE Prevention Proactive Anti Violence Education and Consulting

Things are not the way they used to be say few decades ago. This is not just in broader terms of living standards, social conditions, etc, but also on microlevels. Just like good things have taken a new form, so have the not-so-good things. Violence, for instance, today, is not just about blood and gory. It is also the fear one feels when walking down a dim-lit alley or that second thought one has while uploading a seemingly harmless and funny image of oneself over the internet.

Listen to podcast

Violence and abuse have surely changed their forms. This means the way to fight them also needs to be changed. Today, it is not just about looking up to authorities to create a safe society, but about empowering individuals to recognize the kind of violence they are being subjected to and protect themselves from it.

Having found herself very early on witnessing inappropriate behavior, power dynamics, treatment, and abuse, Arlene, a lifelong martial artist, athlete, and coach, has always advocated for safer spaces where athletes and people, in general, could thrive and succeed. Being a doer all her life, Arlene joined PAVE, a global organization whose purpose is to ignite change on the corporate and institutional level by providing access, process, and culture change. Arlene has spent her career advocating for athlete safety on and off the field of play. This commitment to safety advocacy ties in well to her new role as the CEO of PAVE Prevention, where she will continue to fulfill her lifelong commitment to personal safety for individuals worldwide.

Transition from a Player to a Guide

Arlene made history as the first American and the first woman to win a Gold Medal in Tae Kwon Do at the 24th Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea, on September 17, 1988. She opened her school, Power Kix Martial Arts, in Stafford in May of 1993, paving the way for other women. Her current 12,500 sq ft facility has been going strong for 30 years.

Arlene Limas

As the CEO of PAVE Prevention, Arlene advocates for personal safety and empowers corporations. She aims to link high-level programming with corporations and organizations, tackling counterproductive work behaviors that can cause low productivity, tardiness, absenteeism, and high turnover. She strongly believes that her years as an athlete and coach have shaped and contributed to her current role. Looking at the company’s planning and goals much like a periodization plan she would set for herself or her team works for them. Also, grasping that it’s about the big goals, not the small wins or losses. “As far as tangible ideas and products, I am so very proud of our proprietary assessment tools and incredible training modules,” she says.

Arlene leverages her expertise, abilities, and achievements to improve the lives of many others as an instructor and entrepreneur. As the CEO of the startup, Arlene’s communication style lands between Intuitive and Personal styles. She loves to collaborate, include, and empower her team. “I feel we are better when we all are contributing,” she asserts.

Creating Safe Workspaces to Boost Productivity and Creativity

PAVE Prevention, a social enterprise aims to change the culture of violence in workplaces by teaching human safety skills. By enabling the individual, focusing on human development, and building fairer and violence-free workspaces, they believe everyone can stop the chain reaction of workplace violence and make safer communities.

Founded in 2021 in the United States of America, its mission is to offer training and consulting services to individuals and organizations – and the communities they serve – on how to prevent, respond, and heal from violent incidents. The founders have long understood that when individuals have the skills and knowledge to establish healthy boundaries, communicate confidently, and handle conflict, companies and communities gain financially and culturally. PAVE’s evidence-based, trauma-informed programming equips employees and members with the skills for better performance, stronger engagement, and healthier work culture.

PAVE Prevention’s objective is to spark change, safety, and leadership among organizations, individuals, and businesses. This is not about the differences. It’s about knowing that you can reach your full potential and succeed feeling safe and secure and because our shared goal is to build better and stronger human relations.

Working on a Deeper Level

Arlene explains that PAVE goes about providing solutions differently. They are trauma-informed, holistic, and deeply based on scenario learning. They aim to train for acknowledgment and awareness of what is happening to us as an individual as we enter into situations. Why is this situation escalating? Is this situation safe just because we know each other?

“I think having panic alarms at desks and on doors are great, better lighting in a parking lot, super, cameras to monitor a building a necessity, but until we empower each individual with a set of, what we call Human Safety Skills we fall short of our safety goals as a society. Learning to set a boundary, using our voice, and understanding the strength of being a good bystander or upstander. Understanding your own trauma, activators, and what an adrenalized response looks and feels like changes everything. It is similar to when an athlete can work through crippling pre-event anxiety. Everything just becomes clearer; you are faster and stronger,” she explains.

PAVE is also using technology to assist with their work. The power of assessments, data collection, and reporting platform have been a game changer for them. It shapes everything, curriculum, trainer approach, and validity of the work. They are also embarking on a partnership with an AI company, Scirevance, that will allow them to stay up-to-date and research at incredible speeds.

The leadership team at PAVE believes that creating diverse and inclusive spaces where people can be their authentic selves is imperative for success. PAVE aims to enable people to perform at their best, while fostering safer practices in their workplaces and communities. Diversity of people, ideas, and experiences enriches organizations. Being inclusive with different thoughts and backgrounds means

more than just expressing or sharing the experiences, but also feeling appreciated for doing so. So, the organization has been created as a multi-generational, multi-cultural, gender-inclusive workspace and they are fortunate to have trainers across the world to serve the communities that they live in.

Dealing with Challenges

When asked about her biggest challenge yet, Arlene says that most athletes and leaders, in general, welcome challenges. She thinks as an athlete, a coach and now leadership with PAVE, just getting folks to acknowledge that we must do better around creating safer spaces is a challenge. It is about changing people’s mindset.

“Everyone acknowledges that violence is happening in private but somehow sees a public discussion as a liability. Safety is a second-tier need just after basic life needs of water, food, and shelter. So, to your question… I am still attacking this challenge and learning every day,” she answers.

She also offers a simple tip that would help people, in their daily lives, to understand their situations and take a step for themselves. She says, “I would offer this tip… ask yourself, what do I want out of this interaction? Where do I want it to go, how will I respond? In a sense, have a game plan. Also, take more time to breathe and ground!”

New Year, New Goals

Arlene and her team are excited for 2024. They have made inroads in municipal sectors that are dealing with violence on a daily basis and are still serving their communities every day. Changing and impacting that culture will be incredibly rewarding. It will also allow them to share that data to encourage more meaningful work for PAVE. “It is my hope that someday in the near future having a good PAVE Score means something, it means that is a great place to work,” concludes Arlene.

“Better alone than in bad company! Integrity is everything!”

Quote: “I believe I have been empowering people through Martial Arts, Exercise, and Sport and now through Consulting and Training in the Workplace.”

“The pain and suffering that come to us have a purpose in our lives – it is trying to teach us something.” – Peace Pilgrim, American Spiritual Leader.

Kevin Miller, an Award-winning, published global communications and healthcare executive with 25 years of business and market development experience always wanted to use his creativity and experience leading large complex global transactions and global teams to eventually create a profound impact on the way behavioural health is addressed in the U.S and abroad. His desire comes from a very personal and tragic experience when he witnessed his Best Friend lose her life at the hands of someone suffering from a Co-occurring disorder (Schizophrenia mixed with a cocaine addiction). Kevin stood helpless over the phone listening to her life aimlessly taken away, stabbed by someone who wouldn’t have done so if he had the proper access to treatment.

“Truth be told, I never really recovered from that, nor did I want to, because in pain you find purpose. I committed that day to never let her death be in vain. I could not save my friend but many lives could be saved by making sure people have the proper access to behavioral healthcare. She continues to inspire me in my audacious aspiration to prevent needless loss of life, by ensuring the best engagement and treatment models across the behavioral health community,” recalls a resolute Kevin.

And so here he is, as the current CEO of Revive BHM (Behavioural Health Management) owns and manages several behavioral health centers providing Mental Health Outpatient and Addiction Recovery services. Their MAT-based programs, coupled with innovative analytics to maximize community engagement have helped them save thousands of lives and help many others find hope and a second chance at life.

This has been the key for Kevin because after all of the large technology deals and innovative pursuits he has led, creating a total of over $1bn in new revenue from servicing brands such as NY Times, WPP, NY Daily News, The Associated Press, ABN Ambro, Christian Louboutin, NY Dept of Economics and Finance, Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Eli Lilly, Boston Scientific and many more. 20-Awards later and thousands of lives saved, Kevin is still motivated more than ever to impact the global behavioral health system in a way that has not been seen.

Creating a Legacy

Kevin is passionate about leaving the world a better place than he found it. He wants to create a legacy that out-lives him and inspires others to be great and to be the best version of themselves. “I am where I am today because I was encouraged along the way by my family and friends.

Consequently, this has led me to owning Behavioral Health Centers designed to help people unlock their full potential,” he says.

Kevin’s tryst with the business world started early in the college dorm ways of Stony Brook University, where he started his very first business selling Ginseng energy supplements to fellow college students on campus. His business was wildly successful and eventually helped him pay his way through college and made him realize that he could think of an idea, actually write a business plan, without any training or experience, and execute it with great success. At 17, he

knew that with a campus of 10,000 students there had to be some unmet need that he could help solve. The success of this business inspired him to create another business while attending school at North Carolina A&T selling Mix Tapes and DVDs which also was the top-performing student-owned business on campus. Shortly thereafter, Kevin came back to NY and started his career in Technology, while starting a business with a good friend providing wireless, voice, and data products and services.

Kevin soon became a Global Technology Executive, leading complex global IT and Telecommunication deals with the likes of some of the largest and most well-known brands in the world. With each win, he continued to thrive for more, to have an even bigger impact. Shortly thereafter, he became a global innovator of sorts, winning The Innovation of the Year award from Johnson & Johnson for creating several joint innovations leveraging mobile technology that would eventually help the company save many lives around the world.

Currently, Kevin owns several behavioral health companies in the U.S. focused on Mental Health Wellness and addiction recovery. The opioid epidemic remains the worst drug-related epidemic in recent history and is the leading cause of death for individuals under the age of 50. His Behavioral Health practice has helped save hundreds of lives through Medicated Assisted Treatment and innovative technology to maximize community impact.

Overall, Kevin has graciously received over 20+ awards for innovation, leadership, character, and business results. This includes The Outstanding Leadership Award from Health 2.0 received last year, the Global Visionaries Award from Heath 2.0 in Dubai for all his innovative work across the globe, and most recently The Hall of Fame award from Passion Vista Magazine for his collective business results and achievements, followed by one of the most prestigious global awards available; The World Leaders Summit Award to be hosted at The House of Lords in London UK by The UK Parliament with members of The Royal Family expected to be in attendance. This Ceremony will feature the top 8-10 World Leaders in their respective fields to receive this honorable global recognition.

Facing the COVID Challenge

Covid was particularly tough on Kevin’s business like most companies, but his team took the opportunity to hit the reset button and restructure while creating new back-end management systems and greatly reduced costs by moving the business toward behavioral health license ownership versus joint venture partnerships in its previous form. The move will help the company maintain creative control, improve operating efficiencies, and accelerate revenue growth by leveraging reduced costs. They also added Telehealth to their portfolio of services allowing them to increase access to their behaviour health support specialists. “The key to success in any business is about maintaining your ability to adapt as the seasons change; after all this has been the story of our evolution,” says Kevin.

Facing Challenges with a Positive Mindset

Kevin’s life experience has taught him that life is what you make it and it starts with your worldview, your paradigm. He has learned that one can’t make the shot that they don’t take and that one cannot hit a target that they cannot see. It’s all about goal planning and follow-through fuelled by the ultimate passion. Therefore, Kevin feels it is essential that people follow their passion, and focus on what other people tell they are good at and what they love to do.

“I’ve had to fight really hard to achieve everything that I have and that fight begins with Faith. If you have no faith, you have no fuel. The greater the vision the greater your Faith must be to achieve your vision,” he says.

Kevin is inspired by several people, but at the very top of that list is his Parents. His parents moved to the United States from Jamaica with nothing in hand and worked hard to create a career. Kevin’s mother worked in Hospital Administration and became a top employee in her department while raising 3 kids. His father started as a maintenance worker quickly rising through the ranks and becoming The Manager of Buildings and Maintenance for his company.

Together it allowed the family to move from the Bronx, following the tragic loss of two uncles to gun violence, and into a safer environment in upstate NY. A move that became a pivotal moment in Kevin’s life because the environment is key.

Being an Inspirational Leader

To the aspiring and budding business people, Kevin’s 3-point advice is:

· Follow your Passion! Be authentic, don’t worry about how different you may be from your friends or others. Everyone must follow their own path based on what you love to do and what you are good at. The two must meet in order to achieve the greatness you seek. It isn’t enough to do something you love, but aren’t good at. You can love to sing, but you may be missing the voice needed to be successful. You must love to sing and be good at it for your career to go anywhere. This is the truth in all career paths.

· Change your paradigm, change your reality! How you see the world is everything. Do you see the glass half full or half empty? Your worldview will determine your attitude; therefore, it is always best to think positively. I have learned that no matter what happens, it is better to find the positive in all things. This is key because you cannot be the best version of yourself in a state of depression or riddled with anxiety. You must keep a clear mind by focusing on what you are grateful for every day.

· Nothing can happen without self-discipline! You must learn to be disciplined in order to achieve any level of success. The more you can train your mind and body to do the things you may not feel like doing, but do them anyway, the further you will go in life. Set goals, write them down, and focus on doing all that you must to execute these goals. Like a good basketball or football team, it’s all about momentum. The team that wins is the one with the most momentum. The same applies in business and your professional career.

Quote: “Leadership is one’s ability to be the beacon of light to those he or she is leading so they can clearly see the path and by seeing they should be evolving.”

Quote: “I believe that we all have that duty to ourselves and our community at large.

As such, this ideal has always been the cornerstone of my audacious pursuits and eventual achievements.”

Quote: “My greatest strength is my ability to communicate clearly and effectively, supported by very strong analytical skills and creativity.”

Melinda Fouts: Helping Business Leaders Achieve their Peak Performance

“A coach is someone that sees beyond your limits and guides you to greatness!” – Michael Jordan, Former Professional Basketball Player, and Businessman.

The people who inspire us to go beyond our limits and excel in what we do go by many names. Coach, teacher, mentor, parents, call them whatever you want. The underlying characteristic being they help us draw ourselves out of our shells and be the great success we are meant to be. For many business executives, Melinda Fouts is the one who has been helping them identify what’s holding them back from being at the top of their game. Her key areas of expertise include but are not limited to small business consulting, enhancing emotional intelligence, and self-awareness, unlocking the fullest potential, brainstorming, identifying limitations, challenges, and obstacles, and optimizing performance.

Discovering her Passion

Melinda’s professional journey began as a psychotherapist 25 years ago in private practice. Her Ph.D. is in Jungian Studies. The emphasis is to gain greater self-awareness. 23 years ago, she brought neurofeedback into her private practice also known as EEG Biofeedback. This was a game changer in her work as she learned about how the brain works and delved into neuroscience. Learning about this was a game-changer in her career and is instrumental to her work as an executive coach. Here is how it all began.

About 8 years ago, she was experiencing working with a global CIO who came to Melinda because her colleague told her that her team was afraid of her because she was harsh and she didn’t see herself as harsh. During their work together, Melinda uncovered what triggered her to pounce on her team. We all have blind spots, and this was one of hers. When they finished their time together, she said, “You need to be an executive coach. I’ve worked with many coaches and even though they were good, they weren’t as good as you. None of them discovered this about me.”

The incident pushed Melinda towards learning more about how she could help executives. Today, she is an International Executive Coach, Columnist & Featured Contributor for Forbes Coaching Counsel, and the Founder of Success Starts With You. Over time, she developed 13 signature leadership development training. One of the most important training is emotional intelligence training. After administering the EQi – 2.0 assessment, individuals learn what their strengths are and what needs development. There are 15 competencies on this assessment. This is useful as we all overuse our strengths which then become a weakness. With this awareness, Melinda works with her client towards developing new areas to bring more balance in how they manage and lead.

The Biggest Obstacle enroute Self-healing

The biggest obstacle, per Melinda, is ourselves, and the mind chatter that undermines us. So many people have a negative tape playing that they are unaware of and/or do not get to the root of it. For example, she had one CEO tell her he never hears the tape playing at work. Melinda mentioned he met with the board and gave a presentation and asked him did anyone comment on it. He told her a colleague came up to him afterward and complimented him on it. She asked him, “what did you say in your mind?” “I could have done it better.” She told him that’s the tape playing. The root of his tape that

undermines him is “I’m not good enough.” Most people have either the I’m not good enough playing or I’m not worthy of it.

Melinda’s unique approach to executive coaching requires her to ask the tough questions that challenge her clients to uncover areas of the unknown within themselves. This allows them to unleash talent leadership skills and optimize their results. “I believe enhanced emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and a better understanding of the obstacles that may lay ahead will lead to career advancement, improve leadership skills, and organizational and personal success,” says Melinda.

Keeping up with the VUCA world in a Holistic Way

Melinda opines that it is imperative to lead a holistic lifestyle to have a balance in one’s day to day. When we consider holistic, it means taking care of oneself mentally, physically, and emotionally. “This is so important to me, that I send my two grandchildren a blessing to be healthy mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Right now, mental health issues are rising and many who I coach tell me, they wish they had more time for themselves to exercise or more time with family,” she asserts.

Many young people are still concerned about FOMO, the fear of missing out and their social calendars drive them to distraction from themselves. Even exercise can become obsessive and just a check off the list rather than getting in touch with the body and listening to it and feeling it. If one is more in touch, there would be fewer injuries when exercising. Listening to one’s body can be a step towards leading a more holistic lifestyle.

Melinda highly recommends some form of mindfulness practice as it gives one more clarity, increases one’s ability to focus, keeps one calm and more resilient, and enhances creativity. Many executives lack impulse control, and mindfulness practice can help them be less reactive.

Focusing on the goals is to know why the organization exists and who they exist for. One company where Melinda is the in-house coach is solid in this where everyone in the organization knows the why and who all the way down to the warehouse employees. When things get moving too fast and changes are occurring, knowing the why and who is the foundation to guide one in decision-making.

Being Recognized for her Work

Melinda earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of New Mexico, her MA in Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute, her Ph.D. in Psychology from Saybrook University, and her Executive Coaching Certification from the College of Executive Coaching.

For her outstanding leadership, dedication, and excellence within multiple industries, Melinda was recently selected as the Top Global Executive Coach of the Year for 2023 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP). In 2021, she received the award for Empowered Woman of the Year. In 2021, she was part of IAOTP’s publication of the Top 50 Fearless Leaders.

In 2019, her book, Cognitive Enlightenment, came out and she will be featured by the publisher at the London Bookfair in April 2023.

A passionate entrepreneur, Melinda has this to say to the young generation of entrepreneurs:

“Find your passion and do it and be true to yourself. Keep a growth mindset as self-actualization throughout life is important and look for the opportunities, they don’t always fall into your lap. When you have an internal struggle, refer back to why you are doing what you are doing and who you are doing it for. Finally, if you take a moment and get in touch with your heart, the answer is always to choose love.”

Good Today, Better Tomorrow

Melinda’s global reach in coaching includes clients in Dubai, Moscow, Ireland, the UK, Spain, France, Afghanistan, and Panama to name a few. Technology has helped her reach out to people around the globe. She has clients all over the world and without the technology to have a virtual meeting, she would be less effective.

Making this world a better place is what drives Melinda to do what she does. Her mission statement is: “If I can help one person have more inner peace, we are one step closer to world peace. If you are struggling with yourself, you are suffering.”

There are many ways to approach making this world a better place, and hers’ is to bring greater self-awareness, and coach toward more inner peace. It is a process that takes awareness and discipline. She rounds her emotions off by quoting her favorite poet, Rumi. This short poem sums up the work she does and is a good reminder there are other perspectives and to be open-minded. It also emphasizes that we are all connected.

“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and right doing,
There is a field. I’ll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass,
The world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase each other
Doesn’t make any sense.”

Anouk Vastert: Customer Centricity Transformation Leader driving Outside-in culture change

A motivator, planner, and connector, Anouk Vastert, Global Customer Experience Advisor at SAP, believes in the importance of bringing people together for better results. An advocate of cross-functional cooperation, Anouk is averse to silos which she feels are the biggest roadblocks in companies hampering the delivery of a good and consistent customer experience and a great employee experience.

She believes in Driving business results through product-, employee- and customer experience improvements. She loves to empower people and teams by first creating a Vision together and setting clear goals. These tactical goals and assets, which she calls Experience Principles, are created with everyone’s input, can be used by everyone, and are a clue towards a successful transformation.

Customer-Centric DNA

Born into a family of Hotel-Restaurant entrepreneurs, Anouk found customer-centricity in her DNA. Luckily, the first job she got was with Coca-Cola where she was nurtured as an Outside-In professional. It allowed her to learn professional Sales and Marketing skills and a customer-centric way of working and building professional customer partnerships. “I learned the service business by heart from my father and often remember his famous quote – the customer is King but only when he/she behaves as a King,” shares Anouk.

At Coca-Cola as a Key Account manager, she was always looking for improvements. Anouk noticed the Order Entry Services department operated separately and was situated on a different floor in the building. That hampered a good way of working towards their largest customers. So here was her Lesson One: if you make a good plan to improve, big chance leadership says ‘Very good idea, go do it! Here Anouk learned that you can do anything, there are no limits; just make a plan, propose, discuss, and GO.

Later when there was a problem with the Supply Chain at the factory in the south of the Netherlands, she went to work there as a Supply Chain Development manager. Her Lesson Two: If you stay a specialist, you might rise faster on the career ladder; I loved going wider from Sales to Supply Chain, learning much more about the overall business which makes you richer and very effective as a manager and cross-functional professional.

After 8 years with Coca-Cola, Anouk moved on to Royal Philips, a leader in Consumer Lifestyle products, Lighting, and HealthCare where she was responsible for the Marketing, Sales, and Digital Transformation of Global Consumer Care. Together with her team, she built and executed Customer Experience in the B2C part of Philips. A few years later, B2B Healthcare asked her to do the same there. That brought her to Atlanta for 2.5 years, building a Global Customer Experience or Customer Centricity Transformation program together with the USA team. Markets and customers were extremely happy with this focus and it brought great results for the company increasing NPS; resulting in increased order book and revenues.

Speaking at a few conferences in 2019 brought her to SAP, another beautiful large strong global company that was at that time hiring people straight from business roles instead of a technology background. For Anouk, it was a great opportunity to work with all kinds of companies instead of just transforming one.

Kickstarting Transformation at SAP

SAP is the Market leader in Enterprise application software helping companies to run at their best. 77% of world transaction revenue touches an SAP system. SAP will continue to be the engine for business, bringing powerful, proven innovations that serve companies both now and into the future. They are helping enterprises around the world transform their business models to accelerate growth, put sustainability at the center of their operations, build resilient and agile supply chains, and increase productivity. Whether companies are transitioning amid market uncertainty or are intent on getting ahead of the competition and being ready for fast-changing demands, SAP helps address top priorities: achieve business transformation at speed, gain easy-to-use innovations, and work with a trusted partner.

When Anouk started with SAP in 2020 as Global Customer Experience (CX) Advisor, she noticed SAP was talking about Customer Experience as if it was only a Digital or IT activity related to their CX Solution Portfolio. This is only partly true. Most companies worldwide talk about Customer Experience as an overall direction or transformation of the organization. And that is wonderful cause SAP can help them to get there. “Together we first create the Customer-Centric Vision and their Experience Principles. Then we do Customer Journey Mapping with a cross-functional team to find their top 10 pain points. This can be in Marketing, Sales, Supply Chain, Finance, or Employee experience. Then we support our customers driving the change in People, Process, Data, and Tools: in the end, bringing in the right technology to support that direction,” says Anouk explaining the process.

Anouk heads a team of 25 Global Customer Experience Advisors that are consultants for customers worldwide. They all come from Business roles at companies in different industries like Walmart, Caterpillar, Philips, Nespresso, ABB, Swarovski, PVH/Calvin Klein. Due to their experience, the conversations they have with Customers are in their business language instead of technology language and are outside-in instead of inside-out.

Customer Centricity as a Way of Business

The notion of having Customer Experience (CX) as an integral part of business strategy has been around for the past 2 decades. However, with the rise in discussions about Customer Experience, there has also been a rise in misunderstanding about CX, how a company can be successful through CX management, and the benefits that a company can expect from CX done right. To dispel the misunderstandings, and make customer-centricity more effective for business, there is a large Customer Experience organization in the world called CPXA. That is where Experience professionals meet, connect and share their work. The CXPA provides a great Exam for everyone who wants to become a Customer Experience Transformation professional: the CCXP. Anouk, a CCXP herself, feels that it is very important that many more CX professionals get this title as there are still so many more companies that need to go in this direction for long-term value.

As the world continuously wants to run better; be more sustainable, efficient, and customer-focused, there are not many things hampering the progress of customer centricity. Things that might stand in the way of moving faster are the original strong technology culture and short-term sales focus at the industry side, and the lack of customer focus at the company’s side. Anouk still gets surprised about the amount of (mostly B2B) companies that can deliver a difficult experience to their customers. There is likely an inside-out, old-fashioned mindset and the company is clearly not investing enough in making it easy to do business with. So, there is still a lot of work to do!

For a few years, Anouk has been a Judge at the International Customer Experience Awards organized by Awards International. “This is beautiful as it brings ALL companies in the world together with their best Customer Experience or Employee Experience projects and results. A great way of seeing what’s going on in the world and where can you learn from it. This year I have been asked to join the Steering Committee of the ICXA,” she shares.

Creating an Inclusive Workplace

SAP aspires to be the most inclusive company and therefore there are many initiatives across the world. They recently launched an initiative called ‘SAP Allyship for Inclusion’; to create an environment where each of us feels included, all of us have a central role to play as allies. “Allyship is the intentional use of our privilege and voice to support and advocate for those who might not have a seat at the table. The beauty is that each one of us needs an ally and each of us can be an ally, and together we can lift each other,” explains Anouk.

Currently most of her efforts go to taking care of respect for each other. There are many different cultures and it is important that everyone understands each other related to behavior and language differences. Native English speakers can take more care of the non-natives by speaking slower and using less slang or word jokes. “We want everyone “in the teams call” to feel included and understand what is being discussed. Here we touch Employee Experience which is a big pillar of Customer Experience hence extremely important to take care of,” says Anouk.

Handling Difficult Situations

Challenges are a part of a professional’s life. When a company is going through a Customer Experience transformation or an IT implementation, many leaders think this is a rational or technical thing. But the biggest challenges often sit with the people. Most times budgets for change management are way too small or taken out and Change is brought back to just a few communications. Same happened in Philips when Anouk was implementing CRM worldwide or during the CX transformation period. Her lesson at that time: “A Fool with a Tool is still a Fool”. They had to increase investments in people for them to understand and drive the change.

As an example; Customer Journey Mapping is not just a rational exercise finding customer pain points, but an opportunity to bring 40 cross functional people together for better understanding of each other’s challenges and teaming up to improve the customer experiences. This also tackled the second challenge which is the silos in the organization. Bringing people together reduces silo thinking and silo way of working.

“I am really allergic to silos and a red thread through my career has been connecting people from different departments to work together cause I truly believe in 1 + 1 = 5.

Especially in Customer Centric or Customer experience transformations, change management is extremely important. Create a Vision together and make the implementation practical, tactical and enjoyable. Make sure to free enough funds and FTE’s for this if you want to be successful,” shares Anouk.

Coming up Next

The Customer Experience Advisory team in SAP will continue to build an outside-in, customer-first way of working within SAP, and they support their customers’ transformation to a customer-centric organization where all capabilities are designed outside-in. Anouk and her team have also developed “Firestarter”; an external thought-leadership and innovation

community crowdsourced by a growing network of business members focused on business topics, issues, and outcomes.

Words of Wisdom

Anouk shares the following gem of advice for budding entrepreneurs:

“Customer First: whatever product you create and sell, make sure your Customer is really at the Center of everything you do. Do not just focus on the technology or selling but make sure your (potential) customers can find you easily, reach out easily, get their questions answered fast and easily, and solve their problems with your products fast and in the way THEY WANT it, not the way you want it. Immediately develop (or hire) a true outside-in mindset in your team.”

Living by Her Rules

“Well-behaved women rarely make history” Eleanor Roosevelt.

Anouk lives her life on her terms and loves to discuss the Status Quo or be a little provocative (her perfume is Provocative Woman by Elisabeth Arden) not just for the sake of it but to get people out of their routines, comfort zones, and flip their thoughts 😊

Anouk is based in the Netherlands and has 2 dogs. As she works full time across the Globe they have a Nanny at home for 2-3 days a week and go to daycare. She didn’t start a family on purpose as she liked her life too much with just work, travel, and friends. She is also a part of an all-women band with 23 other spirited women who love to make some music and have fun.

As a volunteer, she is currently on the board of the animal shelter and this July with her niece Nynke (20, daughter of her sister) she’ll be off to Malawi, Africa to work at the Lilongwe Wildlife Sanctuary.

Dr. Melissa Hortman – a purposefully driven disruptor

The Purposefully Driven Disruptor Leads Higher Education Transformation Innovation for Students of Today and Tomorrow

As a purposefully driven disruptor, Dr. Melissa Hortman does everything intentionally and strategically to challenge the status quo and to create positive change.

Charting Her Path

Dr. Hortman’s path was never meant to lead her to work for big tech. She realized early in her professional journey that she was meant for a path less taken. However, the common thread that has pulled her along through each step of her journey is a fundamental mission to help others and make a positive impact in the world.

As an undergraduate, Dr. Hortman chose Architecture because every space we occupy can affect our mood, productivity, and behavior. As a bonus, this was as far away from education as she could get as her parents were educators and she didn’t want to walk in their footsteps. She had to pave her own path.

Outside of learning about the theory and practice of Architecture, Dr. Hortman worked multiple jobs on campus to help pay her tuition. She learned about the heart of higher education through auxiliary and support services. There was something there for her that aligned with her passions. She decided to pursue a master’s in student affairs to understand higher education more. The layers started to unpeel for her to see how working in higher education could give her purpose in helping others and making a positive impact. She found a love for innovating in teaching and learning, working to pave the path for new programs and initiatives, and being an ally and advocate for inclusivity. She had the privilege of teaching amazing students and mentoring people around her, many of which had more of an impact on her than she had on them.

She then found her personal mission aligning with that of Microsoft, “to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more.” While she does not work within a singular higher education institution, Dr. Hortman gets to lead work across all of higher education. “My goal is to bring higher education and Microsoft closer together because we are both working on solving the same problems, serving the same people, and driving forward a future of transformation and innovation in education,” she says.

Her Work at Microsoft

When Dr. Hortman began to understand the heart of higher education, she became deeply invested in its success. When she joined Microsoft, she wanted to make sure she wasn’t leaving higher education as she knew there is still more work for her to do there. As a Senior Industry Executive at Microsoft, she helps higher education transform for the students of today and tomorrow. Her goal is to empower faculty innovation and student resiliency to make higher education more agile and stronger during disruptions now and in the future. “We live in a time when disruptions are all around us, increasingly more in higher education than there ever was in the past. I work with colleagues across academia to help solve these current challenges and anticipate future needs,” she says.

Another part of Dr. Hortman’s role is driving Microsoft’s strategy in academic research. This is such a fascinating area because, while cloud computing has been around and is available for researchers in higher education, the use of the cloud to accelerate time to science and science to scholarship is becoming more pervasive for all types of research. The cloud is a game-changer for researchers. It can transform their research because what may not have been possible before is possible now. New research questions can be asked. New science can be explored. The possibilities are endless.

Ideas at Work

Dr. Hortman’s role at Microsoft was envisioned to support faculty in their pursuits of teaching, research, and scholarship. She joined Microsoft to build a bridge. Coming from academia, these are her colleagues, and her friends, that are now her customers, and it was important for her to make sure to approach them as such.

Driving strategy along with connecting with customers positions Dr. Hortman to give faculty and researchers a voice within Microsoft. During her tenure, she launched a new approach to the Microsoft Academic Research Community Advisory Board that created a more intimate group of researchers and leaders in the research community who were willing to lean in and truly advise Microsoft on how we could better support this community. As Microsoft works to truly show up for research and accelerate time to science and science to scholarship, Dr. Hortman has a trusted group of advisors she consults with to ensure they are working in the right direction for the academic community.

Taking on Challenges

Dr. Hortman faced challenges as a female in various predominately male fields. From Architecture to big tech and even advanced degrees, she has been one of the few females in those spaces. She has learned how to find her voice and speak up to share another perspective or challenge the status quo. It was incredibly challenging but amazingly liberating. This is where her passion for disruption started. “Your voice is your strongest asset and can use it for driving your personal and professional mission forward,’ she asserts.

Dr. Hortman’s father often told her from a very young age, “if you aren’t having fun, don’t do it”. She has lived by these words in her personal and professional life. “Fun is in the challenges you work to overcome, it’s in the successes you find, it’s in the relationships you build,” she says.

Leveraging Technology

Technology is only as good as the human using it. Dr. Hortman believes technology can never replace a human, but a human using technology can. That is important to remember as the world is quickly changing around us, and we can easily become irrelevant tomorrow with the advancement of technology. Staying current on technology, even if it isn’t directly relevant to one’s role, is imperative as technology is becoming more pervasive across all disciplines.

Dr. Hortman is excited about working with disruptive technologies. “Working in the space of early adoption and emerging capabilities can put you on the bleeding edge. Sometimes you’re successful in your bleeding edge innovations, many times not. While you might be more comfortable in the middle or even at the end of the innovation curve, we must educate ourselves on what is already here and what is coming so we can better anticipate change,” she says.

Throughout her career, Dr. Hortman has used technology as a catalyst to create opportunities to accelerate her ideas, design innovations and processes, and support her in pushing boundaries. She has worked alongside a team to create a wellness PowerApp that scaled to a 30,000+ employee enterprise and created automated workflows for my team so they never had to worry about backup on taking days off.

She has seen amazing people leverage technology to transform education and research in innovative ways. “I’ve seen how cloud technologies can truly transform research in ways she never thought possible. Putting advanced technology in the hands of some of the smartest people in the world, academic researchers, we are seeing bleeding-edge research come to life and answer some of the toughest research questions ever asked. Technology didn’t do the research. Technology didn’t push through boundaries. Researchers empowered with advanced technologies did,” she asserts.

Rewarding Moments

For Dr. Hortman, more than accolades, it has always been important to seek out how she could have an impact. While there have been awards along the way, it’s the stories of impact behind the awards that really stick with her.

Dr. Hortman has impacted higher education by sharing her best practices and research with colleagues. She has delivered keynotes at industry conferences where she presented over 40 peer-reviewed sessions. She was also part of a group that created a novel, international, peer-reviewed journal for faculty to share their innovations in teaching and learning in higher education. She earned a Hero Award in her first year at Microsoft for bringing the faculty voice to all they do at Microsoft. She was nominated to be part of a leadership development program at Microsoft.

While professional impacts are important, personal pursuits of impact are equally as important for Dr. Hortman. After having conversations with colleagues across Microsoft, she discovered there wasn’t proactive communication for higher education faculty. She aimed to change that with a LinkedIn newsletter called “On Track with MicrosoftEDU” where she highlights a colleague in academia, shares timely resources and brings together all the Microsoft opportunities and events for faculty. Finally, she recently completed the Disney “Dopey” Challenge, which consists of a 5K, 10K, half marathon, and full marathon completed in consecutive days. “This is the second time I’ve completed this running challenge, once before I had my two children and now once after. It was amazing to see my kids hold up signs of encouragement like ‘My mom is awesome!’ and “Run, mommy, run!” she exclaims.

On the Cards

Dr. Hortman’s goal is to showcase Microsoft’s value in technology across all roles in higher education, and by expanding its market to end-users across campus, innovative opportunities can be discovered throughout the institution. She truly believes in Microsoft’s mission to empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve more. Growth at Microsoft in higher education means empowering every student, every faculty member, and every administrator with the tools so they can excel in their respective roles and contribute to the overall success of their institution.

Expanding the research enterprise and research excellence are areas of interest across all higher education because while the advancement of knowledge is important, it is equally important to grow funding sources for higher education. With only 2.57% of institutions having R1 (very high research activity) classification in the U.S., there are 4,383 other institutions that are striving to grow their research enterprises (per 2021 data of the Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education). Dr. Hortman’s goal is to bring Microsoft alongside to support 100% of the institutions who want to grow their research enterprise by transforming research infrastructure to expand options for faculty’s research initiatives, foster a culture of research where the institution can strive to move to or retain R1 classification, and build a vision for leading innovation and discovery that will drive economic growth and development in their communities and regions.

Words for the Next Gen Disruptors

“As the world around us is changing constantly, Dr. Hortman would challenge the next generation, in any organization or domain, to disrupt or be disrupted. Change is constant so it is important to be agile in one’s work and approaches.

As higher education moves into the next decade, the transformation will need to be considered in higher education from admissions processes to communicating and collaborating with individuals and teams. Leaders can inspire and influence transformation all while providing stability during change. Thus, transformational leaders can create a clear and inspiring vision that they can effectively communicate to others while also being focused on the growth and development of individuals on their teams. If the disruption of COVID-19 has taught the next generation of higher education leaders anything, it is that they can overcome very challenging times and come out on the other side stronger for themselves, their team, and the students they serve. Those are the leaders of tomorrow that I am excited about leaning into transformation for all of higher education,” concludes Dr. Hortman.
